    Sexual Interference Behaviors in Male Adult and Subadult Tibetan Macaques (\u3ci\u3eMacaca thibetana\u3c/i\u3e)

    Male nonhuman primate sexual interference, which includes copulation interruption and copulation harassment, has been related to reproductive success, but its significance has been challenging to test. Copulation interruption results in the termination of a copulation before ejaculation, whereas copulation harassment does not. We conducted this study using the all-occurrence behavior sampling method on sexual interference behaviors of seven adult and four subadult male Tibetan macaques (Macaca thibetana) in mating and non-mating seasons at Mt. Huangshan, China, from August 2016 to May 2017. Our results showed that males’ individual proportion of copulation interruption and harassment was higher during the mating season than during the non-mating season. In addition, dominant males more often performed interruption, whereas subordinate males more often performed harassment. We found no difference in the individual proportion of copulation interruption or harassment between adult and subadult males. Adult and subadult males both directed copulation interruption and harassment more often toward the mating male than toward the mating female. Lastly, the post-ejaculation phase of copulation was shorter when copulation harassment occurred than when it did not. Our results suggest that sexual interference may be an important mating tactic that adult and subadult males use in male–male sexual competition

    More illness in offspring of bipolar patients from the U.S. compared to Europe.

    Background Evidence suggests that patients with bipolar disorder from the United States have an earlier age of onset and a more difficult course of illness than those from Germany and the Netherlands. These characteristics were related to a greater family burden of psychiatric illness and the experience of more psychosocial adversity in childhood. We hypothesized that this greater illness burden would extend to the offspring of the US patients. Methods 968 outpatients (average age 41) with bipolar illness gave informed consent for participation in a treatment outcome network and filled out a detailed questionnaire about their illness and family history of illness, including whether their offspring had a diagnosis of depression, bipolar disorder, alcohol or substance abuse, suicide attempt or “other” illness. Of those with children, 356 were from the US and 132 were from Europe. Results Compared to the Europeans, offspring of patients from the US had significantly (p\u3c0.001) more depression, bipolar disorder, drug abuse, and “other” illnesses. The number of illnesses in the offspring was related to the bipolar parent being from the US, having had childhood adversity, more than 20 prior episodes, and more parental psychiatric illness. Conclusions While the findings are limited by their basis on self report, the distribution of the percentages in the US offspring are similar to those of Axelson et al. (2015) who used direct interviews. The higher burden of illness in the offspring and their in directprogenitors from the US compared to Europe warrant new attempts at better treatment and prevention

    Relationship of comorbid personality disorders to prospective outcome in bipolar disorder

    Introduction There is a high incidence of Axis II personality disorders (PDs) in patients with bipolar illness, but their influence on the prospectively measured course of bipolar disorder has been less well explicated. Methods 392 outpatients with bipolar disorder gave informed consent, completed the PDQ4 99 item personality disorder rating, and where clinically rated during at least one year of prospective naturalistic treatment. They were classified as Well on admission (N = 64) or Responders (N = 146) or Non-responders (N = 182) to treatment for at least six months. Results Patients who were positive for PDs were very infrequently represented in the category of Well on admission. In addition, patients with borderline, depressive, and schizoid PDs were significantly more likely to be Non-responders compared to Responders upon prospective naturalistic treatment in the network. Conclusions Patients with bipolar disorder and comorbid PDs were in general less likely to be Well from treatment in the community at network entry or to be a Responder to prospective treatment in the network. Therapeutic approaches to patients with PDs deserve specific study in an attempt to achieve a better long-term course of bipolar disorder

    Are personality disorders in bipolar patients more frequent in the US than Europe?

    Objective: Bipolar patients in the United States (US) compared to those from the Netherlands and Germany (here abbrev. as “Europe”) have more Axis I comorbidities and more poor prognosis factors such as early onset and psychosocial adversity in childhood. We wished to examine whether these differences also extended to Axis II personality disorders (PDs). Methods: 793 outpatients with bipolar disorder diagnosed by SCID gave informed consent for participating in a prospective longitudinal follow up study with clinician ratings at each visit. They completed detailed patient questionnaires and a 99 item personality disorder inventory (PDQ-4). US versus European differences in PDs were examined in univariate analyses and then logistic regressions, controlling for severity of depression, age, gender, and other poor prognosis factors. Results: In the univariate analysis, 7 PDs were more prevalent in the US than in Europe, including antisocial, avoidant, borderline, depressive, histrionic, obsessive compulsive, and schizoid PDs. In the multivariate analysis, the last 4 of these PDs remained independently greater in the US than Europe. Conclusions: Although limited by use of self report and other potentially confounding factors, multiple PDs were more prevalent in the US than in Europe, but these preliminary findings need to be confirmed using other methodologies. Other poor prognosis factors are prevalent in the US, including early age of onset, more childhood adversity, anxiety and substance abuse comorbidity, and more episodes and rapid cycling. The interactions among these variables in relationship to the more adverse course of illness in the US than in Europe require further study

    Detection of minority drug resistant mutations in Malawian HIV-1 subtype C-positive patients initiating and on first-line antiretroviral therapy

    Background: Minority drug resistance mutations (DRMs) that are often missed by Sanger sequencing are clinically significant, as they can cause virologic failure in individuals treated with antiretroviral therapy (ART) drugs. Objective: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of minor DRMs among patients enrolled in a Malawi HIV drug resistance monitoring survey at baseline and at one year after initiation of ART. Methods: Forty-one plasma specimens collected from HIV-1 subtype C-positive patients and seven clonal control samples were analysed using ultra-deep sequencing technology. Results: Deep sequencing identified all 72 DRMs detected by Sanger sequencing at the level of ≥20% and 79 additional minority DRMs at the level of < 20% from the 41 Malawian clinical specimens. Overall, DRMs were detected in 85% of pre-ART and 90.5% of virologic failure patients by deep sequencing. Among pre-ART patients, deep sequencing identified a statistically significant higher prevalence of DRMs to nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) compared with Sanger sequencing. The difference was mainly due to the high prevalence of minority K65R and M184I mutations. Most virologic failure patients harboured DRMs against both NRTIs and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs). These minority DRMs contributed to the increased or enhanced virologic failures in these patients. Conclusion: The results revealed the presence of minority DRMs to NRTIs and NNRTIs in specimens collected at baseline and virologic failure time points. These minority DRMs not only increased resistance levels to NRTIs and NNRTIs for the prescribed ART, but also expanded resistance to additional major first-line ART drugs. This study suggested that drug resistance testing that uses more sensitive technologies, is needed in this setting

    Prevalent, protective, and convergent IgG recognition of SARS-CoV-2 non-RBD spike epitopes

    The molecular composition and binding epitopes of the immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies that circulate in blood plasma following SARS-CoV-2 infection are unknown. Proteomic deconvolution of the IgG repertoire to the spike glycoprotein in convalescent subjects revealed that the response is directed predominantly (>80%) against epitopes residing outside the receptor-binding domain (RBD). In one subject, just four IgG lineages accounted for 93.5% of the response, including an N-terminal domain (NTD)-directed antibody that was protective against lethal viral challenge. Genetic, structural, and functional characterization of a multi-donor class of “public” antibodies revealed an NTD epitope that is recurrently mutated among emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern. These data show that “public” NTD-directed and other non-RBD plasma antibodies are prevalent and have implications for SARS-CoV-2 protection and antibody escape

    Skin Lesions on Common Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) from Three Sites in the Northwest Atlantic, USA

    Skin disease occurs frequently in many cetacean species across the globe; methods to categorize lesions have relied on photo-identification (photo-id), stranding, and by-catch data. The current study used photo-id data from four sampling months during 2009 to estimate skin lesion prevalence and type occurring on bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) from three sites along the southeast United States coast [Sarasota Bay, FL (SSB); near Brunswick and Sapelo Island, GA (BSG); and near Charleston, SC (CHS)]. The prevalence of lesions was highest among BSG dolphins (P = 0.587) and lowest in SSB (P = 0.380), and the overall prevalence was significantly different among all sites (p<0.0167). Logistic regression modeling revealed a significant reduction in the odds of lesion occurrence for increasing water temperatures (OR = 0.92; 95%CI:0.906–0.938) and a significantly increased odds of lesion occurrence for BSG dolphins (OR = 1.39; 95%CI:1.203–1.614). Approximately one-third of the lesioned dolphins from each site presented with multiple types, and population differences in lesion type occurrence were observed (p<0.05). Lesions on stranded dolphins were sampled to determine the etiology of different lesion types, which included three visually distinct samples positive for herpesvirus. Although generally considered non-fatal, skin disease may be indicative of animal health or exposure to anthropogenic or environmental threats, and photo-id data provide an efficient and cost-effective approach to document the occurrence of skin lesions in free-ranging populations
