Do the colors of your letters depend on your language? Language-dependent and universal influences on grapheme-color synesthesia in seven languages
Grapheme-color synesthetes experience graphemes as having a consistent color (e.g., âN is turquoiseâ). Synesthetesâ specific associations (which letter is which color) are often influenced by linguistic properties such as phonetic similarity, color terms (âY is yellowâ), and semantic associations (âD is for dog and dogs are brownâ). However, most studies of synesthesia use only English-speaking synesthetes. Here, we measure the effect of color terms, semantic associations, and non-linguistic shape-color associations on synesthetic associations in Dutch, English, Greek, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Spanish. The effect size of linguistic influences (color terms, semantic associations) differed significantly between languages. In contrast, the effect size of nonlinguistic influences (shape-color associations), which we predicted to be universal, indeed did not differ between languages. We conclude that language matters (outcomes are influenced by the synestheteâs language) and that synesthesia offers an exceptional opportunity to study influences on letter representations in different languages.Depto. de PsicobiologĂa y MetodologĂa en Ciencias del ComportamientoFac. de PsicologĂaTRUEpu
Investigating Misophonia: A Review of the Empirical Literature, Clinical Implications, and a Research Agenda
Misophonia is a neurobehavioral syndrome phenotypically characterized by heightened
autonomic nervous system arousal and negative emotional reactivity (e. g., irritation,
anger, anxiety) in response to a decreased tolerance for specific sounds. The aims of
this review are to (a) characterize the current state of the field of research on misophonia,
(b) highlight what can be inferred from the small research literature to inform treatment
of individuals with misophonia, and (c) outline an agenda for research on this topic. We
extend previous reviews on this topic by critically reviewing the research investigating
mechanisms of misophonia and differences between misophonia and other conditions.
In addition, we integrate this small but growing literature with basic and applied research
from other literatures in a cross-disciplinary manner
A limited sampling schedule to estimate individual pharmacokinetics of pemetrexed in patients with varying renal functions
Purpose: Pemetrexed is a widely used cytostatic agent with an established exposureâresponse relationship. Although dosing is based on body surface area (BSA), large interindividual variability in pemetrexed plasma concentrations is observed. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) can be a feasible strategy to reduce variability in specific cases leading to potentially optimized pemetrexed treatment. The aim of this study was to develop a limited sampling schedule (LSS) for the assessment of pemetrexed pharmacokinetics. Methods: Based on two real-life datasets, several limited sampling designs were evaluated on predicting clearance, using NONMEM, based on mean prediction error (MPE %) and normalized root mean squared error (NRMSE %). The predefined criteria for an acceptable LSS were: a maximum of four sampling time points within 8 h with an MPE and NRMSE †20%. Results: For an accurate estimation of clearance, only four samples in a convenient window of 8 h were required for accurate and precise prediction (MPE and NRMSE of 3.6% and 5.7% for dataset 1 and of 15.5% and 16.5% for dataset 2). A single sample at t = 24 h performed also within the criteria with MPE and NRMSE of 5.8% and 8.7% for dataset 1 and of 11.5% and 16.4% for dataset 2. Bias increased when patients had lower creatinine clearance. Conclusions: We presented two limited sampling designs for estimation of pemetrexed pharmacokinetics. Either one can be used based on preference and feasibility
Pseudo-Synesthesia through Reading Books with Colored Letters
Background Synesthesia is a phenomenon where a stimulus produces consistent extraordinary subjective experiences. A relatively common type of synesthesia involves perception of color when viewing letters (e.g. the letter âaâ always appears as light blue). In this study, we examine whether traits typically regarded as markers of synesthesia can be acquired by simply reading in color. Methodology/Principal Findings Non-synesthetes were given specially prepared colored books to read. A modified Stroop task was administered before and after reading. A perceptual crowding task was administered after reading. Reading one book (>49,000 words) was sufficient to induce effects regarded as behavioral markers for synesthesia. The results of the Stroop tasks indicate that it is possible to learn letter-color associations through reading in color (F(1, 14) = 5.85, p = .030). Furthermore, Stroop effects correlated with subjective reports about experiencing letters in color (r(13) = 0.51, p = .05). The frequency of viewing letters is related to the level of association as seen by the difference in the Stroop effect size between upper- and lower-case letters (t(14) = 2.79, p = .014) and in a subgroup of participants whose Stroop effects increased as they continued to read in color. Readers did not show significant performance advantages on the crowding task compared to controls. Acknowledging the many differences between trainees and synesthetes, results suggest that it may be possible to acquire a subset of synesthetic behavioral traits in adulthood through training. Conclusion/Significance To our knowledge, this is the first evidence of acquiring letter-color associations through reading in color. Reading in color appears to be a promising avenue in which we may explore the differences and similarities between synesthetes and non-synesthetes. Additionally, reading in color is a plausible method for a long-term âsynestheticâ training program
Nonergodicity transitions in colloidal suspensions with attractive interactions
The colloidal gel and glass transitions are investigated using the idealized
mode coupling theory (MCT) for model systems characterized by short-range
attractive interactions. Results are presented for the adhesive hard sphere and
hard core attractive Yukawa systems. According to MCT, the former system shows
a critical glass transition concentration that increases significantly with
introduction of a weak attraction. For the latter attractive Yukawa system, MCT
predicts low temperature nonergodic states that extend to the critical and
subcritical region. Several features of the MCT nonergodicity transition in
this system agree qualitatively with experimental observations on the colloidal
gel transition, suggesting that the gel transition is caused by a low
temperature extension of the glass transition. The range of the attraction is
shown to govern the way the glass transition line traverses the phase diagram
relative to the critical point, analogous to findings for the fluid-solid
