Varna during the Ottoman period (from the 15th to the 19th C.) - research achievements and perspectives

This paper presents the achievements of, and the perspectives for, research on the history of Varna during the Ottoman period (from the 15th to the 19th C.). The historical sources that provide information on the subject are discussed in detail: Ottoman, Greek, Bulgarian, periodicals, foreign sources, and consular correspondence. The first written accounts on the history of the city are also taken into consideration. To a certain extent, they also play the role of historical sources on the subject. An overview is made of the topics on which scientific research is still to be done. The conclusion is drawn that in the future the history of Varna during the Ottoman period should be explored by analyzing all available historical sources in a comprehensive and unbiased way, and taking into account the diversity of the city's population in the period

Les premiers manuels de commerce bulgares et les influences européennes au XIXe siècle

Die ersten bulgarischen Handelsbücher und die europäischen Einflüsse im 19. Jahrhundert Der Artikel stellt die ersten bulgarischen Handel shandbucher dar, die während der letzten Jahrzehnten der nationalen Wiedergeburt – in der Periode der 30-70er Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts – entstanden sind. Es handelt sich um mehr als zwei hundert Biicher, die der bulgarischen Gesellschaft Handelskenntnisse anboten. Sie erklärten die Grundprobleme auf verschiedenen Gebieten, wie Buchhandlung, Mathematik, Géographie, allgemeine Geschichte usw. Dazu muss man auch die Handbucher und die fremdsprachigen Konversationsbucher, sowie auch die sog. Guides épistolaires erwähnen. Die letzten waren direkt mit der Handels- ausbildung und ihrer Anwendung verbunden. Unter europäischem, hauptsächlich französischem Einfluss formierten sich gegen Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts die bulgarischen Handelshandbucher. Der Artikel ist nur eine Einführung in das größere Thema der Modernisierungs- oder Europäisierungsrolle des Handels in der bulgarischen Gesellschaft im 19. Jahrhundert.The First Bulgarian Business Textbooks and European Influences in the Nineteenth Century The article examines the first Bulgarian business textbooks, which appeared in the final decades of the National Revival Period (1830-1870). The more than 200 books printed in this era provided Bulgarians with important knowledge for succeeding in business in such areas as accounting, geography, arithmetics, and world history as well as foreign language dictionaries and conversation guides either directly or indirectly related to business or its practical applications. It is possible to trace the European (and especially French towards the middle of the century) influence of which these manuals are the resuit. The theme of business manuals is only an introduction to a much more widespread issue: the role of business modernization and Europeanization on nineteenth-century Bulgarian society.Roussev Ivan.
