Lessons on Eternal Traversable Wormholes in AdS
We attempt to construct eternal traversable wormholes connecting two
asymptotically AdS regions by introducing a static coupling between their dual
CFTs. We prove that there are no semiclassical traversable wormholes with
Poincar\'e invariance in the boundary directions in higher than two spacetime
dimensions. We critically examine the possibility of evading our result by
coupling a large number of bulk fields. Static, traversable wormholes with less
symmetry may be possible, and could be constructed using the ingredients we

Electrophysiological and Behavioral Responses of Theocolax elegans (Westwood) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) to Cereal Grain Volatiles
Volatiles emitted by the host's food would be the first signals used by parasitoids in the host location process and are thought to play an important role in host habitat location. In this study, the olfactory responses of Theocolax elegans (Westwood), a Pteromalid wasp that parasitizes immature stages of stored-product insect pests developing inside cereal or leguminous grains, to volatiles emitted by healthy wheat grains, their hexane extracts, and different doses of three individual compounds previously identified in cereal grain odors were investigated in Y-tube olfactometer and Petri dish arena behavioral bioassays and electroantennogram recordings. In Y-tube olfactometer bioassays, odors from healthy wheat grains and their hexane extracts were attractive to both sexes of T. elegans. Moreover, hexane extracts elicited arresting effects in Petri dish arena. The three synthetic compounds valeraldehyde, maltol, and vanillin elicited dose-dependent responses in both male and female adult wasps confirming the capability of the peripheral olfactory systems to perceive cereal volatiles. In behavioral bioassays, different doses of vanillin were significantly attractive to both sexes
A simple quantum algorithm to efficiently prepare sparse states
State preparation is a fundamental routine in quantum computation, for which
many algorithms have been proposed. Among them, perhaps the simplest one is the
Grover-Rudolph algorithm. In this paper, we analyse the performance of this
algorithm when the state to prepare is sparse. We show that the gate complexity
is linear in the number of non-zero amplitudes in the state and quadratic in
the number of qubits. We then introduce a simple modification of the algorithm,
which makes the dependence on the number of qubits also linear. This is
competitive with the best known algorithms for sparse state preparatio
Promoting sustainability goals: innovation trajectories of Fintech through patent analysis
Patents are important sources of technical knowledge because they offer a wealth of information on innovations and technological developments. This paper focuses on Fintech-related patent certificates in order to examine the technical trends in this particular sector and dis- cuss the factors influencing technological advancement. The data were retrieved through the World Intellectual Property Organization database, considering selected keywords. Through the network analysis, we identify five relevant technological clusters that allow us to detect the technological substrate underlying the corresponding cluster. The Bass diffusion model permits the observation of the technological trajectories of each cluster, outlining the diffusion patterns. Furthermore, particular attention is given to the developing technologies defined as "green", and we describe how these trends have changed over time and predict their future technological trajectory. Our findings provide an in-depth analysis of the Fin- tech patent landscape, highlighting the connections between the different technologies. It also allows us to assess the technological leadership of companies and the technological life cycle that describes the diffusion patterns

Linear Accelerator Test Facility at LNF Conceptual Design Report
Test beam and irradiation facilities are the key enabling infrastructures for
research in high energy physics (HEP) and astro-particles. In the last 11 years
the Beam-Test Facility (BTF) of the DA{\Phi}NE accelerator complex in the
Frascati laboratory has gained an important role in the European
infrastructures devoted to the development and testing of particle detectors.
At the same time the BTF operation has been largely shadowed, in terms of
resources, by the running of the DA{\Phi}NE electron-positron collider. The
present proposal is aimed at improving the present performance of the facility
from two different points of view: extending the range of application for the
LINAC beam extracted to the BTF lines, in particular in the (in some sense
opposite) directions of hosting fundamental physics and providing electron
irradiation also for industrial users; extending the life of the LINAC beyond
or independently from its use as injector of the DA{\Phi}NE collider, as it is
also a key element of the electron/positron beam facility. The main lines of
these two developments can be identified as: consolidation of the LINAC
infrastructure, in order to guarantee a stable operation in the longer term;
upgrade of the LINAC energy, in order to increase the facility capability
(especially for the almost unique extracted positron beam); doubling of the BTF
beam-lines, in order to cope with the signicant increase of users due to the
much wider range of applications.Comment: 71 page
A longitudinal study on BIO14.6 hamsters with dilated cardiomyopathy: micro-echocardiographic evaluation
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In recent years, several new technologies for small-animal imaging have been developed. In particular, the use of ultrasound in animal imaging has focused on the investigation of accessible biological structures such as the heart, of which it provides a morphological and functional assessment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of micro-ultrasonography (ÎĽ-US) in a longitudinal study on BIO14.6 cardiomyopathic hamsters treated with gene therapy.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Thirty hamsters were divided into three groups (n = 10): Group I, untreated BIO 14.6 hamsters; Group II, BIO 14.6 hamsters treated with gene therapy; Group III, untreated wild type (WT) hamsters. All hamsters underwent serial ÎĽ-US sessions and were sacrificed at predetermined time points.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>ÎĽ-US revealed: in Group I, progressive dilation of the left ventricle with a change in heart morphology from an elliptical to a more spherical shape, altered configuration of the mitral valve and subvalvular apparatus, and severe reduction in ejection fraction; in Group II, mild decrease in contractile function and ejection fraction; in Group III, normal cardiac chamber morphology and function. There was a negative correlation between the percentage of fibrosis observed at histology and the ejection fraction obtained on ÎĽ-echocardiography (Spearman r: -0.839; p < 0.001).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Although histological examination remains indispensable for a conclusive diagnosis, high-frequency ÎĽ-echocardiography, thanks to the high spatial and contrast resolution, can be considered sufficient for monitoring therapeutic efficacy and/or the progression of dilated cardiomyopathy, providing an alternative tool for repeatable and noninvasive evaluation.</p
Climate and landscape composition explain agronomic practices, pesticide use and grape yield in vineyards across Italy
Context
Worldwide, organic farming is being promoted as one of the main alternatives to intensive conventional farming. However, the benefits of organic agriculture are still controversial and need to be tested across wide environmental gradients.
Objective
Here, we carried out an observational study to test how agronomic practices, pest management, environmental impact and yield of conventional and organic vineyards changed along wide climatic and landscape gradients across Italy.
Methods
We used a block design with 38 pairs of conventional and organic vineyards across Italy.
Results and conclusions
Most agronomic practices did not differ between conventional and organic vineyards. By contrast, landscape composition and climate were strong predictors of management in both systems. First, increasing semi-natural areas around the vineyards reduced pesticide pressure and related environmental impacts, but was also associated with lower yield. Second, irrespective of the farming system, a warm and dry climate was associated with reduced fungicide pressure. Conventional farming had a yield gain of 40% in cold and wet climate compared to organic but the yield gap disappeared in the warmest regions.
Significance
In both farming systems, we observed a large variability in management practices that was mainly explained by climate and landscape composition. This large variability should be considered when evaluating the benefits and drawbacks of different farming systems under contrasting environmental contexts
The economic impact of biosimilars in Italy : a scenario analysis
Background: the first generation of biotechnology drugs is reaching, or has already reached, the patent expiry and a large number of biosimilars is entering the Italian pharmaceutical market. The objective of the analysis was to evaluate the economic impacts of biosimilars on the national health expenditure in Italy between 2014 and 2020. Methods: Based on the information deriving from consumption per standard unit and equivalent patients, it was estimated monthly expenditure for some of the biological drugs currently available in Italy that have had or will have a patent expiry within the analysis period (infliximab, etanercept, adalimumab, insulin glargine, trastuzumab, rituximab, bevacizumab and insulin aspart). Pharmaceutical expenditure was calculated on hospital sales prices net of transparent discounts required by law and visible from the AIFA database. Three alternative scenarios have been developed based on the perceptions of a board of clinical experts, pharmacologists and pharmacoeconomists involved in the study. The experts involved analyzed the estimates of treated patients between 2014 and 2017 and reports their hypothetical biosimilar penetration during the period 2018-2020. The results were represented as the difference between the estimated expenditure in the absence of biosimilars and the estimated expenditure in the presence of biosimilars with the real or hypothetical biosimilar penetration. Results: considering the standard units dispensed for each year, the economic model estimate an annual expenditure in 2014 equal to € 1.47 billion for the molecules considered in the analysis. These estimates rise to € 1.54, € 1.50 billion and € 1.51 billion during 2015, 2016 and 2017 in the scenario without biosimilar introduction. Biosimilar introduction generates cost savings between € 3.8 million in 2015 and € 32.9 million in 2017 if compared with the scenario without. Assuming an increasing biosimilar penetration between 2018 and 2020, scenario analysis estimates a cumulative cost reduction equal to € 597 million. Conclusions: Overall, biosimilar penetration generates important cost reduction that could be re-invested in the National Health Sistem
