Lightweight Low Force Rotary Percussive Coring Tool for Planetary Applications
A prototype low-force rotary-percussive rock coring tool for use in acquiring samples for geological surveys in future planetary missions was developed. The coring tool could eventually enable a lightweight robotic system to operate from a relatively small (less than 200 kg) mobile or fixed platform to acquire and cache Mars or other planetary rock samples for eventual return to Earth for analysis. To gain insight needed to design an integrated coring tool, the coring ability of commercially available coring bits was evaluated for effectiveness of varying key parameters: weight-on-bit, rotation speed, percussive rate and force. Trade studies were performed for different methods of breaking a core at its base and for retaining the core in a sleeve to facilitate sample transfer. This led to a custom coring tool design which incorporated coring, core breakage, core retention, and core extraction functions. The coring tool was tested on several types of rock and demonstrated the overall feasibility of this approach for robotic rock sample acquisition
Ethanol: A Better Preservation Technique For Daphnia
A 4% formalin-40% sucrose solution has been used by limnologists for three decades as the preferred freshwater zooplankton preservative because it kills and fixes cladocera (Branchiopoda) with relatively little distortion. Because of the increasing evidence of health hazards related to formalin, we sought an alternative, safer preservative that satisfies the need for low distortion. Our results suggest the ethanol preservative methods (70% and 95% treatments) are as good or better as using 4% sugar formalin to fix and store samples. Our results indicate the best method is to fix samples in 95% EtOH followed by storage in 70% EtOH. This technique gave us the least frequent distortion, the highest average number of eggs per female, and the fewest embryos lost from the brood chamber. None of the techniques appeared to have positive or negative effects on body length. Using hot water to fix animals before storage is not recommended
Emergence of communities and diversity in social networks
Communities are common in complex networks and play a significant role in the functioning of social, biological, economic,
and technological systems. Despite widespread interest in detecting community structures in complex networks and exploring the
effect of communities on collective dynamics, a deep understanding of the emergence and prevalence of communities in social
networks is still lacking. Addressing this fundamental problem
is of paramount importance in understanding, predicting, and
controlling a variety of collective behaviors in society. An elusive question is how communities with common internal properties arise in social networks with great individual diversity. Here,
we answer this question using the ultimatum game, which has
been a paradigm for characterizing altruism and fairness. We
experimentally show that stable local communities with different
internal agreements emerge spontaneously and induce social
diversity into networks, which is in sharp contrast to populations with random interactions. Diverse communities and social
norms come from the interaction between responders with inherent heterogeneous demands and rational proposers via local connections, where the former eventually become the community
leaders. This result indicates that networks are significant in the
emergence and stabilization of communities and social diversity.
Our experimental results also provide valuable information about

Zipf Law in Firms Bankruptcy
Using an exhaustive list of Japanese bankruptcy in 1997, we discover a Zipf
law for the distribution of total liabilities of bankrupted firms in high debt
range. The life-time of these bankrupted firms has exponential distribution in
correlation with entry rate of new firms. We also show that the debt and size
are highly correlated, so the Zipf law holds consistently with that for size
distribution. In attempt to understand ``physics'' of bankruptcy, we show that
a model of debtor-creditor dynamics of firms and a bank, recently proposed by
economists, can reproduce these phenomenological findings
Atmospheric hydroxyl radical (OH) abundances from ground-based ultraviolet solar spectra: an improved retrieval method
The Fourier Transform Ultraviolet Spectrometer (FTUVS) instrument has recorded a long-term data record of the atmospheric column abundance of the hydroxyl radical (OH) using the technique of high resolution solar absorption spectroscopy. We report new efforts in improving the precision of the OH measurements in order to better model the diurnal, seasonal, and interannual variability of odd hydrogen (HOx) chemistry in the stratosphere, which, in turn, will improve our understanding of ozone chemistry and its long-term changes. Until the present, the retrieval method has used a single strong OH absorption line P1(1) in the near-ultraviolet at 32,341 cm−1. We describe a new method that uses an average based on spectral fits to multiple lines weighted by line strength and fitting precision. We have also made a number of improvements in the ability to fit a model to the spectral feature, which substantially reduces the scatter in the measurements of OH abundances
