Charge Distribution Near Oxygen Vacancies in Reduced Ceria
Understanding the electronic charge distribution around oxygen vacancies in
transition metal and rare earth oxides is a scientific challenge of
considerable technological importance. We show how significant information
about the charge distribution around vacancies in cerium oxide can be gained
from a study of high resolution crystal structures of higher order oxides which
exhibit ordering of oxygen vacancies. Specifically, we consider the
implications of a bond valence sum analysis of CeO and
CeO. To illuminate our analysis we show alternative
representations of the crystal structures in terms of orderly arrays of
co-ordination defects and in terms of flourite-type modules. We found that in
CeO, the excess charge resulting from removal of an oxygen atom
delocalizes among all three triclinic Ce sites closest to the O vacancy. In
CeO, the charge localizes on the next nearest neighbour Ce atoms.
Our main result is that the charge prefers to distribute itself so that it is
farthest away from the O vacancies. This contradicts \emph{the standard picture
of charge localisation} which assumes that each of the two excess electrons
localises on one of the cerium ions nearest to the vacancy. This standard
picture is assumed in most calculations based on density functional theory
(DFT). Based on the known crystal structure of PrO, we also
predict that the charge in CeO will be found in the second
coordination shell of the O vacancy. Although this review focuses on bulk
cerium oxides our approach to characterising electronic properties of oxygen
vacancies and the physical insights gained should also be relevant to surface

Time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model for light-induced superconductivity in the cuprate LESCO
Cavalleri and coworkers have discovered evidence of light-induced
superconductivity and related phenomena in several different materials. Here we
suggest that some features may be naturally interpreted using a time-dependent
Ginzburg-Landau model. In particular, we focus on the lifetime of the transient
state in LaEuSrCuO (LESCO), which is
remarkably long below about 25 K, but exhibits different behavior at higher

Instability of fixed, low-thrust drag compensation
FORCED drag compensation using continuous low-thrustpropulsion has been considered for satellites in low Earth orbit. This simple, but nonoptimal, scheme merely requires that the thrust vector is directed opposite to the drag vector and that the magnitude of the two are equal. In principle, the drag force acting on the spacecraft could be determined onboard using accurate accelerometers. However, for small, low-cost spacecraft such sensors may beunavailable. An alternative strategy would be to Ž x the thrust magnitude equal to the expected air drag that would be experienced by the spacecraft. The thrust levelwould be periodically updated based on ground-based orbit determination. In this Engineering Note, it is shown that such a forced circular orbit with a Ž fixed thrust levelis exponentially unstable for all physically reasonable atmosphere models
Short Note: Report of mummified leopard seal carcass in the southern Dry Valleys, McMurdo Sound, Antarctica.
The wide spread occurrence of mummified seal and penguin carcasses tens of kilometres from the open ocean is an interesting phenomenon occurring in the Antarctic Dry Valleys. Mummified seal carcasses were first reported by Scott’s expedition in 1903 (Scott 1969), and live seals and seal carcasses have since been reported many kilometres from the nearest ice-free ocean. Seal carcasses found in the McMurdo Dry Valleys are predominantly crabeater seals (Lobodon carcinophaga (Hombron & Jacquinot)) with a smaller number of Weddell seals, (Leptonychotes weddellii (Lesson)), also reported. Here we present only the second published report of a leopard seal carcass from the McMurdo Dry Valleys
Design of a Multi-Moon Orbiter
The Multi-Moon Orbiter concept is introduced, wherein a single spacecraft orbits
several moons of Jupiter, allowing long duration observations. The ΔV requirements
for this mission can be low if ballistic captures and resonant gravity assists by Jupiter’s
moons are used. For example, using only 22 m/s, a spacecraft initially injected in a
jovian orbit can be directed into a capture orbit around Europa, orbiting both Callisto
and Ganymede enroute. The time of flight for this preliminary trajectory is four years,
but may be reduced by striking a compromise between fuel and time optimization during
the inter-moon transfer phases
