Beef Facilities and Management at U.S. Meat Animal Research Center
The Cattle Operations Unit functions as a support service to the research scientists and maintains the animal populations necessary for our livestock research. Indirectly, this also involves responsible land management and herd health procedures. All the facilities and procedures employed in maintaining the extensive cattle herd are determined by research needs. Consequently, while providing a function sometimes indirectly related to research, the operations unit is necessary to provide adequate feedstuffs and healthy animals for research studies
Normal and abnormal prosthetic valve function as assessed by doppler echocardiography
Doppler echocardiography was performed in 136 patients with a normally functioning prosthetic valve in the aortic (n = 59), mitral (n = 74) and tricuspid (n = 3) positions. These included patients with St. Jude (n = 82), Björk-Shiley (n = 18), Beall (n = 13), Starr-Edwards (n = 7) or tissue (n = 16) valves. Peak and mean pressure gradients across the prostheses were measured using the simplified Bernoulli equation. The prosthetic valve orifice (PVO, in square centimeters), only in the mitral position, was calculated by the equation: PVO = 220/pressure half-time.In the aortic position, the St. Jude valve had a lower peak velocity (2.3 ± 0.6 m/s, range 1.0 to 3.9), peak gradient (22 ± 12 mm Hg, range 4 to 61) and mean gradient (12 ± 7 mm Hg, range 2 to 32) than the other valves (p < 0.05 when compared with Starr-Edwards). In the mitral position, the St. Jude valve had the largest orifice (3.0 ± 0.6 cm2, range 1.8 to 5.0) (p < 0.0001 compared with all other valves). Insignificant regurgitation was commonly found by pulsed mode Doppler technique in patients with a St. Jude or Björk-Shiley valve in the aortic or mitral position and in patients with a Starr-Edwards or tissue valve in the aortic position. In 17 other patients with a malfunctioning prosthesis (four St. Jude, two Björk-Shiley, four Beall and seven tissue valves) proven by cardiac catheterization, surgery or autopsy, Doppler echocardiography correctly identified the complication (significant regurgitation or obstruction) in all but 2 patients who had a Beall valve.It is concluded that 1) the St. Jude valve appears to have the most optimal hemodynamics; mild regurgitation can be detected by the Doppler technique in normally functioning St. Jude and Björk-Shiley valves in the aortic or mitral position and in Starr-Edwards and tissue valves in the aortic position, and 2) Doppler echocardiography is a useful method for the detection of prosthetic valve malfunction, especially when the St. Jude, Björk-Shiley and tissue valves are assessed
Self-Assessment and Planned Change of Placement and Career Services Center
In the 1990s, college and university career services and placement units face many challenges which may influence their success including (a) increased budgetary constraints, (b) changing student demographics, (c) increased availability of computer technologies, (d) new service delivery models, and (e) changing employer recruitment practices. In an effort to address these issues and examine its role within the university (Roth, 1994), the Placement and Career Information Center (PCIC) at Central Michigan University undertook a program of applied research, self-assessment and planned change. The purpose of this article is to briefly report our experiences in conducting this program of applied research. The assessment strategy is presented in the first part of this report. Next, the methods used to collect data and assessment, sampling procedures and response rates are described. Following this, highlights of the assessment results are presented including a summary of some changes already made and those planned for the future. The results of this study are presented in detail in Adams, et at. (1994)
Anti-retroviral therapy increases the prevalence of dyslipidemia in South African HIV-infected patients
Purpose Data on the prevalence of dyslipidaemia and associated risk factors in HIV-infected patients from sub-Saharan Africa is sparse. We performed a cross-sectional analysis in a cohort of HIV-infected South African adults. METHODS: We studied HIV-infected patients who were either antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naive or receiving non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI)-based or protease inhibitor (PI)-based ART. Evaluation included fasting lipograms, oral glucose tolerance tests and clinical anthropometry. Dyslipidemia was defined using the NCEP ATPIII guidelines. RESULTS: The median age of the participants was 34 years (range 19-68 years) and 78% were women. The prevalence of dyslipidemia in 406 ART-naive and 551 participants on ART was 90.0% and 85%, respectively. Low HDL-cholesterol (HDLC) was the most common abnormality [290/406 (71%) ART-naïve and 237/551 (43%) ART- participants]. Participants on ART had higher triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), LDL-cholesterol (LDLC) and HDLC than the ART-naïve group. Severe dyslipidaemia, (LDLC> 4.9 mmol/L or TG >5.0 mmol/L) was present in <5% of participants. In multivariate analyses there were complex associations between age, gender, type and duration of ART and body composition and LDLC, HDLC and TG, which differed between ART-naïve and ART-participants. CONCLUSION: Participants on ART had higher TG, TC, LDLC and HDLC than those who were ART-naïve but severe lipid abnormalities requiring evaluation and treatment were uncommon
Nucleation of -Branes and Fundamental Strings
We construct a solution to the low-energy string equations of motion in five
dimensions that describes a circular loop of fundamental string exponentially
expanding in a background electric -field. Euclideanising this gives an
instanton for the creation of a loop of fundamental string in a background
-field, and we calculate the rate of nucleation. Solutions describing
magnetically charged strings and -branes, where the gauge field comes from
Kaluza-Klein reduction on a circle, are also constructed. It is known that a
magnetic flux tube in four (reduced) spacetime dimensions is unstable to the
pair creation of Kaluza-Klein monopoles. We show that in dimensions,
magnetic ``fluxbranes" are unstable to the nucleation of a magnetically
charged spherical -brane. In ten dimensions the instanton describes the
nucleation of a Ramond-Ramond magnetically charged six-brane in type IIA string
theory. We also find static solutions describing spherical charged -branes
or fundamental strings held in unstable equilibrium in appropriate background
