    Fast, high fidelity information transmission through spin chain quantum wires

    Spin chains have been proposed as quantum wires for information transfer in solid state quantum architectures. We show that huge gains in both transfer speed and fidelity are possible using a minimalist control approach that relies only a single, local, on-off switch actuator. Effective switching time sequences can be determined using optimization techniques for both ideal and disordered chains. Simulations suggest that effective optimization is possible even in the absence of accurate models.Comment: revtex4, 4 pages, 5 figure

    Invariant Manifolds, the Spatial Three-Body Problem and Space Mission Design

    The invariant manifold structures of the collinear libration points for the spatial restricted three-body problem provide the framework for understanding complex dynamical phenomena from a geometric point of view. In particular, the stable and unstable invariant manifold \tubes" associated to libration point orbits are the phase space structures that provide a conduit for orbits between primary bodies for separate three-body systems. These invariant manifold tubes can be used to construct new spacecraft trajectories, such as a \Petit Grand Tour" of the moons of Jupiter. Previous work focused on the planar circular restricted three-body problem. The current work extends the results to the spatial case

    Turbulent Supernova Shock Waves and the Sterile Neutrino Signature in Megaton Water Detectors

    The signatures of sterile neutrinos in the supernova neutrino signal in megaton water Cerenkov detectors are studied. Time dependent modulation of the neutrino signal emerging from the sharp changes in the oscillation probability due to shock waves is shown to be a smoking gun for the existence of sterile neutrinos. These modulations and indeed the entire neutrino oscillation signal is found to be different for the case with just three active neutrinos and the cases where there are additional sterile species mixed with the active neutrinos. The effect of turbulence is taken into account and it is found that the effect of the shock waves, while modifed, remain significant and measurable. Supernova neutrino signals in water detectors can therefore give unambiguous proof for the existence of sterile neutrinos, the sensitivity extending beyond that for terrestial neutrino experiments. In addition the time dependent modulations in the signal due to shock waves can be used to trace the evolution of the shock wave inside the supernova.Comment: 28 pages, 11 figure

    Analysis of enhanced tan(beta) corrections in MFV GUT scenarios

    We analyse a minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) taking a minimal flavour violation (MFV) structure at the GUT scale. We evaluate the parameters at the electroweak scale taking into account the full flavour structure in the evolution of the renormalization group equations. We concentrate mainly on the decay Bs -> mu mu and its correlations with other observables like b -> s gamma, b -> s l l, Delta M_Bs and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We restrict our analysis to the regions in parameter space consistent with the dark matter constraints. We find that the BR(Bs -> mu mu) can exceed the current experimental limit in the regions of parameter space which are allowed by all other constraints thus providing an additional bound on supersymmetric parameters. This holds even in the constrained MSSM. Assuming an hypothetical measurement of BR(Bs -> mu mu) ~ 10^-7 we analyse the predicted MSSM spectrum and flavour violating decay modes of supersymmetric particles which are found to be small.Comment: 47 pages, 16 figures (best viewed printed or in pdf format), updated lattice inputs used, version submitted to PR

    Retain is a variety of creeping foxtail (Alopecurus arundinaceus Poir.) developed by the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and released February 1, 1979. Retain does not shatter its seed immediately as it matures as does the Garrison variety of this species. It is possible to leave Retain until it has ripened and harvest it with a sickle bar combine. The greater ease of harvesting and higher yields will make the seed more readily available. Creeping foxtail is adapted to low, fairly saline areas which are flooded for about two weeks in the spring. It wil not stand as much flooding or yield as much forage as reed canary grass but is more palatable and digestible. Seed increased by the Foundation Seed Stock Division has been released to a South Dakota seed firm. Certified seed will be available from harvests made in 1981 or 1982. Plant Variety Protection has been applied for, so Retain will be sold only by variety name as certified seed

    Studies on the Weak Itinerant Ferromagnet SrRuO3 under High Pressure to 34 GPa

    The dependence of the Curie temperature Tc on nearly hydrostatic pressure has been determined to 17.2 GPa for the weak itinerant ferromagnetic SrRuO3 in both polycrystalline and single-crystalline form. Tc is found to decrease under pressure from 162 K to 42.7 K at 17.2 GPa in nearly linear fashion at the rate dTc/dP = -6.8 K/GPa. No superconductivity was found above 4 K in the pressure range 17 to 34 GPa. Room-temperature X-ray diffraction studies to 25.3 GPa reveal no structural phase transition but indicate that the average Ru-O-Ru bond angle passes through a minimum near 15 GPa. The bulk modulus and its pressure derivative were determined to be B =192(3) GPa and B' = 5.0(3), respectively. Parallel ac susceptibility studies on polycrystalline CaRuO3 at 6 and 8 GPa pressure found no evidence for either ferromagnetism or superconductivity above 4 K

    Orderliness, reflected via mathematical laws, is encountered in different frameworks involving social groups. Here we show that a thermodynamics can be constructed that macroscopically describes urban population flows. Microscopic dynamic equations and simulations with random walkers underlie the macroscopic approach. Our results might be regarded, via suitable analogies, as a step towards building an explicit social thermodynamics

    On the determination of the spin of the black hole in Cyg X-1 from X-ray reflection spectra

    The spin of Cygnus X-1 is measured by fitting reflection models to Suzaku data covering the energy band 0.9-400 keV. The inner radius of the accretion disc is found to lie within 2 gravitational radii (r_g=GM/c^2) and a value for the dimensionless black hole spin is obtained of 0.97^{+0.014}_{-0.02}. This agrees with recent measurements using the continuum fitting method by Gou et al. and of the broad iron line by Duro et al. The disc inclination is measured at 23.7^{+6.7}_{-5.4} deg, which is consistent with the recent optical measurement of the binary system inclination by Orosz et al of 27+/-0.8 deg. We pay special attention to the emissivity profile caused by irradiation of the inner disc by the hard power-law source. The X-ray observations and simulations show that the index q of that profile deviates from the commonly used, Newtonian, value of 3 within 3r_g, steepening considerably within 2r_g, as expected in the strong gravity regime.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures, MNRAS in pres

    Non-local nuclear spin quieting in quantum dot molecules: Optically-induced extended two-electron spin coherence time

    We demonstrate the extension of coherence between all four two-electron spin ground states of an InAs quantum dot molecule (QDM) via non-local suppression of nuclear spin fluctuations in both constituent quantum dots (QDs), while optically addressing only the upper QD transitions. Long coherence times are revealed through dark-state spectroscopy as resulting from nuclear spin locking mediated by the exchange interaction between the QDs.     Prewetting transitions of Ar and Ne on alkali metal surfaces

    We have studied by means of Density-Functional calculations the wetting properties of Ar and Ne adsorbed on a plane whose adsorption properties simulate the Li and Na surfaces. We use reliable ab-initio potentials to model the gas-substrate interactions.
