    Metallicity Distribution Functions of Four Local Group dwarf galaxies

    We present stellar metallicities in Leo I, Leo II, IC 1613, and Phoenix dwarf galaxies derived from medium (F390M) and broad (F555W, F814W) band photometry using the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) instrument aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. We measured metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) in two ways, 1) matching stars to isochrones in color-color diagrams, and 2) solving for the best linear combination of synthetic populations to match the observed color-color diagram. The synthetic technique reduces the effect of photometric scatter, and produces MDFs 30-50 % narrower than the MDFs produced from individually matched stars. We fit the synthetic and individual MDFs to analytical chemical evolution models (CEM) to quantify the enrichment and the effect of gas flows within the galaxies. Additionally, we measure stellar metallicity gradients in Leo I and II. For IC 1613 and Phoenix our data do not have the radial extent to confirm a metallicity gradient for either galaxy. We find the MDF of Leo I (dwarf spheroidal) to be very peaked with a steep metal rich cutoff and an extended metal poor tail, while Leo II (dwarf spheroidal), Phoenix (dwarf transition) and IC 1613 (dwarf irregular) have wider, less peaked MDFs than Leo I. A simple CEM is not the best fit for any of our galaxies, therefore we also fit the `Best Accretion Model' of Lynden-Bell 1975. For Leo II, IC 1613 and Phoenix we find similar accretion parameters for the CEM, even though they all have different effective yields, masses, star formation histories and morphologies. We suggest that the dynamical history of a galaxy is reflected in the MDF, where broad MDFs are seen in galaxies that have chemically evolved in relative isolation and narrowly peaked MDFs are seen in galaxies that have experienced more complicated dynamical interactions concurrent with their chemical evolution.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted in A

    Implementing Pharmacy Informatics in College Curricula: The AACP Technology in Pharmacy Education and Learning Special Interest Group

    Many professional organizations have initiatives to increase the awareness and use of informatics in the practice of pharmacy. Within education we must respond to these initiatives and make technology integral to all aspects of the curriculum, inculcating in students the importance of technology in practice. This document proposes 5 central domains for organizing planning related to informatics and technology within pharmacy education. The document is intended to encourage discussion of informatics within pharmacy education and the implications of informatics in future pharmacy practice, and to guide colleges of pharmacy in identifying and analyzing informatics topics to be taught and methods of instruction to be used within the doctor of pharmacy curriculum

    Observation of Amounts of Movement Practice Provided during Stroke Rehabilitation

    Objective To investigate how much movement practice occurred during stroke rehabilitation, and what factors might influence doses of practice provided. Design Observational survey of stroke therapy sessions. Setting Seven inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation sites. Participants We observed a convenience sample of 312 physical and occupational therapy sessions for people with stroke. Interventions Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures We recorded numbers of repetitions in specific movement categories and data on potential modifying factors (patient age, side affected, time since stroke, FIM item scores, years of therapist experience). Descriptive statistics were used to characterize amounts of practice. Correlation and regression analyses were used to determine whether potential factors were related to the amount of practice in the 2 important categories of upper extremity functional movements and gait steps. Results Practice of task-specific, functional upper extremity movements occurred in 51% of the sessions that addressed upper limb rehabilitation, and the average number of repetitions/session was 32 (95% confidence interval [CI]=20–44). Practice of gait occurred in 84% of sessions that addressed lower limb rehabilitation and the average number of gait steps/session was 357 (95% CI=296–418). None of the potential factors listed accounted for significant variance in the amount of practice in either of these 2 categories. Conclusions The amount of practice provided during poststroke rehabilitation is small compared with animal models. It is possible that current doses of task-specific practice during rehabilitation are not adequate to drive the neural reorganization needed to promote function poststroke optimally

    Surgical therapy for atrial tachycardia in adults

    AbstractEighteen adult patients with atrial tachycardia refractory to treatment with a mean of four drugs underwent attempted surgical cure. Atrial tachycardia originated in the right atrium in 17 patients and the left atrium in 1 patient. Tachycardia could be reproducibly induced and terminated by atrial extrastimuli or atrial pacing in 8 patients (44%). Resection of the arrhythmogenic area was performed in 16 patients (89%), and an isolation procedure was performed in 1 patient. In seven cases (39%), the area of isolation or excision included the sinoatrial node. One patient underwent His bundle section because the arrhythmogenic region was too close to the atrioventricular (AV) conduction system to enable resection.The mean duration of clinical follow-up was 56 ± 34 months. Clinical tachycardia recurred in five patients (28%), but in two patients it did not recur until >1 year after surgery. A permanent pacemaker was implanted in 3 (18%) of the 17 patients whose His-Purkinje system was left intact. One other patient had required permanent pacing before surgery. Only one of the seven patients undergoing sinoatrial node resection or isolation required permanent pacing for symptomatic bradycardia. Apart from the requirement for permanent pacing, no significant complications occurred.Surgical therapy for atrialtachycardia is a safe procedure, but the rate of cure appears to be less than that of supraventricular tachycardias associated with accessory AV connections. Excision or isolation of the sinoatrial node does not necessitate permanent pacing in most patients

    Measuring Metallicities with HST/WFC3 photometry

Copyright 2013 American Astronomical SocietyWe quantified and calibrated the metallicity and temperature sensitivities of colors derived from nine Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) filters aboard the Hubble Space Telescope using Dartmouth isochrones and Kurucz atmospheres models. The theoretical isochrone colors were tested and calibrated against observations of five well studied galactic clusters: M92, NGC 6752, NGC 104, NGC 5927, and NGC 6791, all of which have spectroscopically determined metallicities spanning -2.30 < [Fe/H] < +0.4. We found empirical corrections to the Dartmouth isochrone grid for each of the following color magnitude diagrams (CMD) (F555W--F814W, F814W), (F336W-F555W, F814W), (F390M-F555W, F814W) and (F390W-F555W, F814W). Using the empirical corrections we tested the accuracy and spread of the photometric metallicities assigned from CMDs and color-color diagrams (which are necessary to break the age-metallicity degeneracy). Testing three color-color diagrams [(F336W-F555W),(F390M-F555W),(F390W-F555W), vs (F555W-F814W)], we found the colors (F390M-F555W) and (F390W-F555W), to be the best suited to measure photometric metallicities. The color (F390W-F555W) requires much less integration time, but generally produces wider metallicity distributions, and, at very-low metallicity, the MDF from (F390W-F555W) is ~60% wider than that from (F390M-F555W). Using the calibrated isochrones we recovered the overall cluster metallicity to within ~0.1 dex in [Fe/H] when using CMDs (i.e. when the distance, reddening and ages are approximately known). The measured metallicity distribution function (MDF) from color-color diagrams show this method measures metallicities of stellar clusters of unknown age and metallicity with an accuracy of ~0.2 - 0.5 dex using F336W--F555W, ~0.15 - 0.25 dex using F390M-F555W, and ~0.2 - 0.4 dex with F390W-F555W, with the larger uncertainty pertaining to the lowest metallicity range
