Towards a determination of the chiral couplings at NLO in 1/N(C): L_8(mu) and C_38(mu)
We present a dispersive method which allows to investigate the low-energy
couplings of chiral perturbation theory at the next-to-leading order (NLO) in
the 1/N(C) expansion, keeping full control of their renormalization scale
dependence. Using the resonance chiral theory Lagrangian, we perform a NLO
calculation of the scalar and pseudoscalar two-point functions, within the
single-resonance approximation. Imposing the correct QCD short-distance
constraints, one determines their difference Pi(t)=Pi_S(t)-Pi_P(t) in terms of
the pion decay constant and resonance masses. Its low momentum expansion fixes
then the low-energy chiral couplings L_8 and C_38. At mu_0=0.77 GeV, we obtain
L_8(mu_0)^{SU(3)} = (0.6+-0.4)10^{-3} and C_{38}(mu_0)^{SU(3)}=(2+-6)10^{-6}.Comment: Extended version published at JHEP01(2007)039. A NLO prediction for
the O(p6) chiral coupling C_38 has been added. The original L_8 results
remain unchange

Reproduction of wild boar in a cropland and coastal wetland area: implications for management
Reproducción del jabalí en hábitats de cultivos y humedales costeros: implicaciones sobre la gestión
Los parámetros reproductivos de una población de jabalí localizada en un paisaje costero, con un mosaico de cultivos y humedales, fueron analizados y comparados con los observados en poblaciones de jabalí que colonizan otros hábitats. Se analizaron un total de 296 tractos reproductivos procedentes de hembras capturadas a lo largo de todo el ciclo anual en el Parque Natural de Els Aiguamolls de l'Empordà entre los años 2000 y 2010. Se contaron los fetos que presentaban las hembras gestantes y se determinó su sexo y edad, así como los períodos de copula y parto. También se registró el peso y edad de cada hembra. De acuerdo con el patrón observado en la mayor parte de poblaciones europeas de la especie, se observó un período de celo principal entre octubre y enero, con un máximo durante noviembre y diciembre, meses que concentraron el 64% de las cópulas. La proporción de hembras gestantes, la tasa de ovulación y el tamaño de camada aumentan con el peso de la hembra. El tamaño medio de camada registrado fue de 5,01 ± 1,33 (rango de dos a ocho) fetos. Este valor es el más elevado registrado en poblaciones salvajes Ibéricas y es parecido al observado en algunas poblaciones del centro de Europa. Además, no se corresponde con el patrón descrito para las poblaciones de jabalí en Europa según el cual se aprecia una correlación positiva entre el aumento del tamaño de la camada y la latitud. La explicación más probable para la alta productividad de la población en la zona de estudio es la gran disponibilidad de alimento a lo largo de todo el año y, especialmente, el elevado consumo de plantas cultivadas, particularmente maíz y girasol. A total of 296 reproductive tracts of females captured year round at the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park were collected and analysed from 2000 to 2010. The foetuses were counted, sexed and aged and the mating and birth periods were determined. The weight and age of each female were also recorded. In accordance with the pattern observed in most European populations, a marked main mating season from October to January was observed. Within this season, there was a peak during November and December, in which 64% of the conception dates were recorded. The proportion of breeding females, ovulation rate and litter size increased with the weight of the reproductive females. A mean litter size of 5.01 ± 1.33 (range from two to eight) foetuses was recorded. This value is the highest known litter size recorded in wild Iberian populations and is similar to values observed in central Europe. Furthermore, it is not in accordance with the pattern reported for other European populations in which a positive correlation between litter size and latitude was observed. The most likely explanation for the high reproductive output in the study area is the availability of food year round, and especially the high consumption of crops such as maize and sunflower. Our results suggest that colonisation of cropland and wetland areas is contributing to the rise in the wild boar population density. Control strategies should consider not only reducing numbers of adult females but also applying measures to reduce food resources available to wild boar

Subject Retention in Prehospital Stroke Research Using a Telephone-Based Physician-Investigator Driven Enrollment Method.
Background and purposeSubject retention into clinical trials is vital, and prehospital enrollment may be associated with higher rates of subject withdrawal than more traditional methods of enrollment. We describe rates of subject retention in a prehospital trial of acute stroke therapy.MethodsAll subjects were enrolled into the NIH Field Administration of Stroke Therapy-Magnesium (FAST-MAG) phase 3 clinical trial. Paramedics screened eligible subjects and contacted the physician-investigator using a dedicated in-ambulance cellular phone. Physician-investigators obtained explicit informed consent from the subject or on-scene legally authorized representative (LAR) who reviewed and signed a consent form. Exception from informed consent (EFIC) was utilized in later stages of the study.ResultsThere were 1,700 subjects enrolled; 1,017 provided consent (60%), 662 were enrolled via LAR (39%), and 21 were enrolled via EFIC (1%). Of the 1,700 patients, 1,413 (83%) completed the 90-day visit, 265 (16%) died prior to the 90-day visit, and 22 (1.3%) withdrew from the study before completion. There were no differences in rates of withdrawal by method of study enrolment, i.e., self-consent (n = 14), 1.4%; LAR (n = 8), 1.2%; EFIC (n = 0) 0%.ConclusionThere was a high rate of retention when subjects were enrolled into prehospital stroke research using a phone-based method to obtain explicit consent

El estudio de la serie eocénica de El Far-Puig del Moro (Gerona) y la subsiguiente comparación con el Eoceno de Vic (Barcelona), permite situar la estratigrafía del Eoceno inferior y medio en la zona de tránsito entre la Cordillera Prelitoral y el Prepirineo. A través de unidades litostratigráficas detalladamente descritas, así como de las atribuciones cronostratigráficas,se tiene una visión útil para las investigaciones posteriores ya iniciadas sobre el Eoceno pirenaico y subpirenaico

The definition is based on a colour and redshift-dependent magnitude cut optimized to select galaxies at redshifts higher than 0.5, while ensuring a high-quality determination. The sample covers ~4100 deg2 to a depth of i = 22.3 (AB) at 10s. It contains 7031 993 galaxies in the redshift range from z = 0.6 to 1.1, with a mean effective redshift of 0.835. Redshifts are estimated with the machine learning algorithm DNF, and are validated using the VIPERS PDR2 sample. We find a mean redshift bias of zbias~0.01 and a mean uncertainty, in units of 1 + z, of σ68~0.03. We evaluate the galaxy population of the sample, showing it is mostly built upon Elliptical to Sbc types. Furthermore, we find a low level of stellar contamination of ≤ 4 per cent. We present the method used to mitigate the effect of spurious clustering coming from observing conditions and other large-scale systematics.We apply it to the BAO sample and calculate weights that are used to get a robust estimate of the galaxy clustering signal. Protecting biodiversity and economic returns in resource-rich tropical forests.
In pursuit of socioeconomic development, many countries are expanding oil and mineral extraction into tropical forests. These activities seed access to remote, biologically rich areas, thereby endangering global biodiversity. Here we demonstrate that conservation solutions that effectively balance the protection of biodiversity and economic revenues are possible in biologically valuable regions. Using spatial data on oil profits and predicted species and ecosystem extents, we optimise the protection of 741 terrestrial species and 20 ecosystems of the Ecuadorian Amazon, across a range of opportunity costs (i.e. sacrifices of extractive profit). For such an optimisation, giving up 5% of a year's oil profits (US 1.7 billion), and uses only marginally less land, to achieve equivalent levels of ecological protection. Applying spatial statistics to remotely sensed, historic deforestation data, we further focus the optimisation to areas most threatened by imminent forest loss. We identify Emergency Conservation Targets: areas that are essential to a cost-effective conservation reserve network and at imminent risk of destruction, thus requiring urgent and effective protection. Governments should employ the methods presented here when considering extractive led development options, to responsibly manage the associated ecological-economic trade-offs and protect natural capital.
