Spin Coherence and N ESEEM Effects of Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers in Diamond with X-band Pulsed ESR
Pulsed ESR experiments are reported for ensembles of negatively-charged
nitrogen-vacancy centers (NV) in diamonds at X-band magnetic fields
(280-400 mT) and low temperatures (2-70 K). The NV centers in synthetic
type IIb diamonds (nitrogen impurity concentration ~ppm) are prepared with
bulk concentrations of cm to cm
by high-energy electron irradiation and subsequent annealing. We find that a
proper post-radiation anneal (1000C for 60 mins) is critically
important to repair the radiation damage and to recover long electron spin
coherence times for NVs. After the annealing, spin coherence times of T~ms at 5~K are achieved, being only limited by C nuclear spectral
diffusion in natural abundance diamonds. At X-band magnetic fields, strong
electron spin echo envelope modulation (ESEEM) is observed originating from the
central N nucleus. The ESEEM spectral analysis allows for accurate
determination of the N nuclear hypefine and quadrupole tensors. In
addition, the ESEEM effects from two proximal C sites (second-nearest
neighbor and fourth-nearest neighbor) are resolved and the respective C
hyperfine coupling constants are extracted.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
The shaping of knowledge transfer from UK universities: an exploration of influences and motivations
Industrial innovation can lead to economic benefits for a nation. Sources of such innovation are therefore important to governments. Over the last decade in the UK there has been a growth in government funding of knowledge transfer (KT) activities from UK universities, as they have been considered a relatively untapped source of innovation. European and regional funding tends to target work relating with SMEs (small to medium sized enterprises) within specific geographical areas. UK national government funding however, can encompass support for a very wide variety of university knowledge and technology transfer activities. This study examines why UK universities undertake knowledge transfer activities and how this work is shaped at individual institutions. Evolutionary theory is used to examine differences at a range of universities, using contextual information about each university’s history and influences
Time evolution of the Partridge-Barton Model
The time evolution of the Partridge-Barton model in the presence of the
pleiotropic constraint and deleterious somatic mutations is exactly solved for
arbitrary fecundity in the context of a matricial formalism. Analytical
expressions for the time dependence of the mean survival probabilities are
derived. Using the fact that the asymptotic behavior for large time is
controlled by the largest matrix eigenvalue, we obtain the steady state values
for the mean survival probabilities and the Malthusian growth exponent. The
mean age of the population exhibits a power law decayment. Some Monte
Carlo simulations were also performed and they corroborated our theoretical

Material dependence of Casimir forces: gradient expansion beyond proximity
A widely used method for estimating Casimir interactions [H. B. G. Casimir,
Proc. K. Ned. Akad. Wet. 51, 793 (1948)] between gently curved material
surfaces at short distances is the proximity force approximation (PFA). While
this approximation is asymptotically exact at vanishing separations,
quantifying corrections to PFA has been notoriously difficult. Here we use a
derivative expansion to compute the leading curvature correction to PFA for
metals (gold) and insulators (SiO) at room temperature. We derive an
explicit expression for the amplitude of the PFA correction to
the force gradient for axially symmetric surfaces. In the non-retarded limit,
the corrections to the Casimir free energy are found to scale logarithmically
with distance. For gold, has an unusually large temperature

Evidence for Cosmic Acceleration is Robust to Observed Correlations Between Type Ia Supernova Luminosity and Stellar Age
Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) are powerful standardizable candles for
constraining cosmological models and provided the first evidence of the
accelerated expansion of the universe. Their precision derives from empirical
correlations, now measured from SNe Ia, between their luminosities,
light-curve shapes, colors and most recently with the stellar mass of their
host galaxy. As mass correlates with other galaxy properties, alternative
parameters have been investigated to improve SN Ia standardization though none
have been shown to significantly alter the determination of cosmological
parameters. We re-examine a recent claim, based on 34 SN Ia in nearby passive
host galaxies, of a 0.05 mag/Gyr dependence of standardized SN Ia luminosity on
host age which if extrapolated to higher redshifts, would be a bias up to 0.25
mag, challenging the inference of dark energy. We reanalyze this sample of
hosts using both the original method and a Bayesian hierarchical model and find
after a fuller accounting of the uncertainties the significance of a dependence
on age to be and after the removal of a single
poorly-sampled SN Ia. To test the claim that a trend seen in old stellar
populations can be applied to younger ages, we extend our analysis to a larger
sample which includes young hosts. We find the residual dependence of host age
(after all standardization typically employed for cosmological measurements) to
be consistent with zero for 254 SNe Ia from the Pantheon sample, ruling out the

Zitterbewegung of nearly-free and tightly bound electrons in solids
We show theoretically that nonrelativistic nearly-free electrons in solids
should experience a trembling motion
(Zitterbewegung, ZB) in absence of external fields, similarly to relativistic
electrons in vacuum.
The Zitterbewegung is directly related to the influence of periodic potential
on the free electron motion.
The frequency of ZB is , where is the energy
gap. The amplitude of ZB is determined by the strength of periodic potential
and the lattice period and it can be of the order of nanometers. We show that
the amplitude of ZB does not depend much on the width of the wave packet
representing an electron in real space.
An analogue of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, known from relativistic
quantum mechanics, is introduced in order to decouple electron states in
various bands. We demonstrate that, after the bands are decoupled, electrons
should be treated as particles of a finite size.
In contrast to nearly-free electrons we consider a two-band model of tightly
bound electrons.
We show that also in this case the electrons should experience the trembling
motion. It is concluded that the phenomenon of Zitterbewegung of electrons in

SIC-POVMs and the Extended Clifford Group
We describe the structure of the extended Clifford Group (defined to be the
group consisting of all operators, unitary and anti-unitary, which normalize
the generalized Pauli group (or Weyl-Heisenberg group as it is often called)).
We also obtain a number of results concerning the structure of the Clifford
Group proper (i.e. the group consisting just of the unitary operators which
normalize the generalized Pauli group). We then investigate the action of the
extended Clifford group operators on symmetric informationally complete POVMs
(or SIC-POVMs) covariant relative to the action of the generalized Pauli group.
We show that each of the fiducial vectors which has been constructed so far
(including all the vectors constructed numerically by Renes et al) is an
eigenvector of one of a special class of order 3 Clifford unitaries. This
suggests a strengthening of a conjuecture of Zauner's. We give a complete
characterization of the orbits and stability groups in dimensions 2-7. Finally,
we show that the problem of constructing fiducial vectors may be expected to
simplify in the infinite sequence of dimensions 7, 13, 19, 21, 31,... . We
illustrate this point by constructing exact expressions for fiducial vectors in
