    Get PDF

Physiology and Pathology of Mitochondrial Dehydrogenases

    Get PDF
Effective mitochondria bioenergetics requires the proper functioning of various intra-organelle dehydrogenases. By providing pyridine and flavin adenine dinucleotides to the electron chain, or Acyl-CoA for the reactions of the tris-carboxylic acid cycle, or the acylation of fatty acids to undergo β-oxidation, these dehydrogenases preside to the organelle production of ATP, required for a variety of cellular functions under physiological conditions. The operation of the various dehydrogenases is mainly regulated by hormones through changes in intra-mitochondrial cation levels and ratios, namely Ca2+ and Mg2+. Dysregulation of specific dehydrogenases under pathological conditions results in marked changes in the energetic level of the organelle and ultimately the cell. The present review will attempt to highlight the role of the main mitochondrial dehydrogenases and their regulation, and provide a general assessment of their dysfunction and associated consequences under some of the most common human pathologies

Thermal signatures of human pheromones in sexual and reproductive behaviour

Chemically mediated sexual communication in humans has been largely neglected due to its non-conscious and relatively concealed nature. However, menstrual cycle synchronisation, puberty onset in young pre-pubertal girls exposed to their stepfather, and consanguinity avoidance suggest a function in the physiological regulation of sexual and reproductive behaviour in humans. These phenomena are related to activation of the limbic system by pheromones. On the basis of sexually dimorphic activation of brain hypothalamic areas and the control of body temperature via the hypothalamus, our hypothesis is that human sexual pheromones can induce thermal effects that can be revealed by high-resolution thermal infrared imaging. Here we show that in women, male sexual pheromones induce thermal effects that are linked to the ovarian cycle. These findings suggest a dramatic influence of pheromones on human sexual and reproductive behaviour through neuroendocrine brain control, established on the plesiomorphic nature of chemical communication across species

In this article I analyze the worker-student alliance in the city of Córdoba, Argentina, during the sixties. I argue that the closeness between workers and students was not only built and deployed through their political and union ties. Since the working class was not isolated from the students and the community, their union also had a substantive articulation in everyday life, through innovative educational experiences, family and neighborhood ties that enabled a common sociability. With that idea, I explore the participation of workers in those experiences that were part of the social transformation processes that began in the ‘50s and that I understand as facilitators of additional connections with students. Host defense pathways against fungi : the basis for vaccines and immunotherapy

    Get PDF
Fungal vaccines have long been a goal in the fields of immunology and microbiology to counter the high mortality and morbidity rates owing to fungal diseases, particularly in immunocompromised patients. However, the design of effective vaccination formulations for durable protection to the different fungi has lagged behind due to the important differences among fungi and their biology and our limited understanding of the complex host–pathogen interactions and immune responses. Overcoming these challenges is expected to contribute to improved vaccination strategies aimed at personalized efficacy across distinct target patient populations. This likely requires the integration of multifaceted approaches encompassing advanced immunology, systems biology, immunogenetics, and bioinformatics in the fields of fungal and host biology and their reciprocal interactions. The studies were supported by the Specific Targeted Research Project “ALLFUN” (FP7-HEALTH-2009-260338) and the Fondazione per la Ricerca sulla Fibrosi Cistica (FFC#21/2010, with the contribution of Francesca Guadagnin, Coca Cola Light® Tribute to Fashion and Delegazione FFC di Belluno). The application of hybrid photocatalysts made of carbon nitride and lead-free perovskites, namely DMASnBr3/g-C3N4 and PEA2SnBr4/g-C3N4, for the H2 evolution from saccharides aqueous solution is described. The novel composites were tested and compared in terms of hydrogen evolution rate (HER) under simulated solar light, using Pt as a reference co-catalyst, and glucose as a representative sacrificial biomass. The conditions were optimized to maximize H2 generation by a design of experiments involving catalyst amount, glucose concentration and Pt loading. For both materials, such parameters affected significantly H2 photogeneration, with the best performance observed using 0.5 g L−1 catalyst, 0.2 M glucose and 0.5 wt% Pt. Under optimized conditions, DMASnBr3/g-C3N4 showed a 5-fold higher HER compared to PEA2SnBr4/g-C3N4, i.e., 925 µmoles g−1 h−1 and 190 µmoles g−1 h−1, respectively (RSD ≤ 11%, n = 4). The former composite, which affords an HER 15-fold higher in aqueous glucose than in neat water, provided H2 also with no metal co-catalyst (around 140 µmoles g−1 h−1), and it was reusable for at least three photoreactions. Encouraging results were also collected by explorative tests on raw starch solution (around 150 µmoles g−1 h−1)
