    Reconstructing North Atlantic marine climate variability using an absolutely-dated sclerochronological network

Available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.Reconstructing regional to hemispheric-scale climate variability requires the application of spatially representative and climatically sensitive proxy archives. Large spatial networks of dendrochronologies have facilitated the reconstruction of atmospheric variability and inferred variability in the Atlantic Ocean system. However, the marine environment has hitherto lacked the direct application of the spatial network approach because of the small number of individual absolutely-dated marine archives. In this study we present the first analyses of a network of absolutely-dated annually-resolved growth increment width chronologies from the marine bivalves Glycymeris glycymeris and Arctica islandica. The network contains eight chronologies spanning > 500 km along the western British continental shelf from the southern Irish Sea to North West Scotland. Correlation analysis of the individual chronologies and a suite of climate indices, including the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), Central England surface air temperature (CET), northeast Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SST's) and the winter North Atlantic Oscillation (wNAO), demonstrates that, despite the large geographical distances been sites and the heterogeneous nature of the marine environment, the increment width variability in these series contains an element of coherence likely driven by a common response to changing environmental forcing. A nested Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to construct five composite series which explain between 31% and 74% of the variance across the individual chronologies. Linear regression analyses indicate that the composite series explain up to 41% of the variance in Northeast Atlantic SSTs over the calibration period (1975–2000). Calibration verification (reduction of error [RE] and coefficient of efficiency [CE]) statistics indicate that the composite series contains significant skill at reconstructing multi-decadal northeast Atlantic SST variability over the past two centuries (1805–2010).     Kohlschütter-tönz Syndrome - Report Of An Additional Case.

    Kohlschütter-Tönz Syndrome is a rare disorder clinically characterized by amelogenesis imperfecta, epilepsy and progressive mental deterioration. We present an additional case of this syndrome of a nine year-old boy who was referred by pigmented teeth. The mental deterioration was associated with speech delay, impulsive behavior, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and learning problems. The physical examination revealed a reduction of lower third, slightly palpebral fissures, low ear and hair implantation, coarse hair and hypertrichosis. The intraoral examination showed alteration in teeth pigmentation diagnosed as amelogenesis imperfecta. Although rare, the present case report illustrates a syndrome that has dental anomalies and systemic alterations. It is important to recognize this syndrome as early as possible and paediatric dentist may contribute to the diagnosis and consequently to better manage the patients.     Abundance and Biomass for American Plaice from the Surveys Conducted by Spain in the NAFO Regulatory Area of Divisions 3NO: 1995-2000

    Since 1995, a stratified random spring bottom trawl survey in the NAFO Regulatory Area of Div. 3NO was conducted by Spain. The depth strata surveyed was extended to 1464 m. The main propose of the surveys was obtain abundance and biomass indices for the commercial species in the area (American plaice, yellowtail flounder, Greenland halibut, cod, witch, roughead grenadier and thorny skate). Following the recommendations of the 2000 Scientific Council Meeting, the entire series of abundance and biomass for American Plaice, the description of the survey design, the specifications and the geometry of the sampling trawl used in the Spanish spring survey in Div. 3NO, are presented for the period 1995-2000.     Pseudomalabsorción como causa de altos requerimientos de levotiroxina: experiencia en el Hospital Universitario San Vicente Fundación

    Se presentan cinco casos de pacientes con hipotiroidismo primario y altos requerimientos de levotiroxina, que luego de haber tenido un abordaje convencional en el ajuste de las dosis necesarias de levotiroxina por el peso y etiología de hipotiroidismo, recomendación y educación para el consumo adecuado de levotiroxina, optimización de la calidad del medicamento recibido, eliminación de interferencias con la absorción por medicamentos o alimentos, reposición de deficiencia de vitamina B12, desparasitación, descartar enfermedad celíaca y gastritis autoinmune atrófica, persisten con TSH elevada pese al uso de dosis altas de levotiroxina (mayores de 2,5 µg/kg/día). Se les practicó prueba de absorción de levotiroxina con 1.000 µg en dosis única de carga y evaluación de los incrementos de T4 libre a las 2 y 4 horas en cuatro pacientes y en uno con suministro semanal de la dosis de levotiroxina y evaluación semanal de T4 libre. Se confirmó en los cinco pacientes la capacidad de absorción de levotiroxina, constituyendo cinco casos de pseudomalabsorción de levotiroxina. Abstract Five patients with primary hypothyroidism and high levothyroxine dose requirements (>2.5 µg/kg/day) are presented. All patients had usual adjustment of the levothyroxine dose according to weight and hypothyroidism etiology. Patients were educated about the appropriate way of drug intake, the quality of the hormone replacement was assessed and withdrawal of all medications potentially interrupting with the levothyroxine absorption was done. All patients had vitamin B12 replacement, were treated for gastrointestinal parasites and celiac disease and autoimmune atrophic gastritis was ruled out. Despite correction of all this factors these patients had elevated TSH. To evaluate a potential mala-absorptive case all patients underwent a levothyroxine absorption test. In 4 cases, 1000 µg of levothyroxine was administered and free T4 was evaluated at 2 and 4 hours after intake of the drug. In 1 case, the levothyroxine was administered weekly with free t4 evaluation. Appropriate levothyroxine absorption was confirmed in all cases and the diagnosis of pseudo mal-absorption of levothyroxine was done

    Seabed litter distribution in the high seas of the Flemish Pass area (NW Atlantic)

    Seabed litter of the Flemish Pass area (NW Atlantic Ocean) was analysed and described using data from the EU-Spain groundfish survey (2006-2017 period). This study presents baseline information on seabed litter in this area. The Flemish Pass is located in areas beyond national jurisdiction within the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization Regulatory Area Division 3L. A total of 1169 valid bottom trawl hauls were analysed (104-1478 m depth). Litter was found in 8.3% of the hauls, with mean densities of 1.4±0.2 items km–2 and 10.6±5.2 kg km–2. An increasing pattern with depth was found, the highest densities of seabed litter being identified in the deepest areas located in the Flemish Pass channel and down the northeastern flank of the Grand Bank. Fishing was found to be the main source of marine litter, and 61.9% of the hauls with litter presence showed litter included in the fisheries-related litter category. Whereas in most cases the litter was composed of small fragments of rope, in other cases it was composed of entire fishing gears such as traps. Plastics, metal and other anthropogenic litter were the next most abundant categories, accounting for 18.6%, 16.5% and 12.4% of the total, respectively.Versión del editor1,00

    Young starless cores embedded in the magnetically dominated Pipe Nebula

    The Pipe Nebula is a massive, nearby dark molecular cloud with a low star-formation efficiency which makes it a good laboratory to study the very early stages of the star formation process. The Pipe Nebula is largely filamentary, and appears to be threaded by a uniform magnetic field at scales of few parsecs, perpendicular to its main axis. The field is only locally perturbed in a few regions, such as the only active cluster forming core B59. The aim of this study is to investigate primordial conditions in low-mass pre-stellar cores and how they relate to the local magnetic field in the cloud. We used the IRAM 30-m telescope to carry out a continuum and molecular survey at 3 and 1 mm of early- and late-time molecules toward four selected starless cores inside the Pipe Nebula. We found that the dust continuum emission maps trace better the densest regions than previous 2MASS extinction maps, while 2MASS extinction maps trace better the diffuse gas. The properties of the cores derived from dust emission show average radii of ~0.09 pc, densities of ~1.3x10^5 cm^-3, and core masses of ~2.5 M_sun. Our results confirm that the Pipe Nebula starless cores studied are in a very early evolutionary stage, and present a very young chemistry with different properties that allow us to propose an evolutionary sequence. All of the cores present early-time molecular emission, with CS detections toward all the sample. Two of them, Cores 40 and 109, present strong late-time molecular emission. There seems to be a correlation between the chemical evolutionary stage of the cores and the local magnetic properties that suggests that the evolution of the cores is ruled by a local competition between the magnetic energy and other mechanisms, such as turbulence.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 15 pages, 5 figures, 9 table
