    Plasduino: an inexpensive, general purpose data acquisition framework for educational experiments

    Based on the Arduino development platform, Plasduino is an open-source data acquisition framework specifically designed for educational physics experiments. The source code, schematics and documentation are in the public domain under a GPL license and the system, streamlined for low cost and ease of use, can be replicated on the scale of a typical didactic lab with minimal effort.     Sediment stacking pattern effect on sand liquefaction inferred from full-scale experiments in the Emilia alluvial plain (Italy)

    The geometry and the depositional configuration of sand bodies affected by the 2012 Emilia earthquakes (Bondeno site, northern Italy) were reconstructed and the role of the sediment stacking pattern was tested using data from full-scale blast experiments. The research integrates remote sensing and surface geological mapping, subsurface investigations including stratigraphic coring and cone penetration tests, grain-size and petrography of sands, geotechnical and geophysical monitoring. Data are compared with the Mirabello blast test site, also in the epicentral area. The results highlight the preeminent role of sediment heterogeneity and their mechanical and compositional properties in modulating liquefaction in alluvial settings. The lateral confinement of the buried sandy bodies, their thickness, and the occurrence of a thick non-liquefiable crust influence the dissipation of the excess pore water pressure, as indicated by the blast monitoring, and therefore the duration of liquefaction phenomena, according to the local stratigraphic architecture

    Liquefaction Hazard Mitigation by Prefabricated Vertical Drains

    Liquefaction has typically been mitigated by in-situ densification; however vertical composite drains offer the possibility of preventing liquefaction and associated settlement while reducing the cost and time required for treatment. Three case histories are presented which describe the use of vertical drains to mitigate liquefaction hazard and techniques to control the flow of water exiting the drains. In addition, results from a test case are presented where controlled blasting techniques were used to evaluate drain performance in-situ. Blasting was successful in liquefying loose sand in an untreated test site. Similar blast charges were then detonated at adjacent sites treated with drains. Measurements demonstrated that the drains significantly increased the rate of pore pressure dissipation. In addition, the installation process typically densified the surrounding soil, thereby decreasing the liquefaction potential. Computer analyses successfully matched the measured response and suggest that the drains could be effective for earthquake events

    The Role of Patient Activation in Psychiatric Visits

    OBJECTIVE: This study identified ways that consumers of mental health services are active participants in psychiatric treatment. METHODS: Four providers (three psychiatrists and one nurse practitioner) were recruited, and ten consumers with severe mental illness were recruited per provider (40 total). Consumers completed questionnaires on patient activation, illness self-management, and medication attitudes on the day of a psychiatric visit. The visit was audiotaped, transcribed, and thematically analyzed. Providers gave information on diagnosis, substance use disorder, and medication adherence. RESULTS: Consumer-rated patient activation was positively related to illness self-management and negatively related to substance use disorder. Transcripts of the psychiatric visit showed that consumers were active in partnership building, seeking and displaying competence, and directing treatment; however, the relationship was weak between consumer-reported activation and observed activation behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: Consumers were found to be active participants in treatment in a variety of ways, but similar to other populations, the relationship between observed patient activation and consumer-reported desire for involvement was not direct

    ixpeobssim: a Simulation and Analysis Framework for the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer

    ixpeobssim is a simulation and analysis framework, based on the Python programming language and the associated scientific ecosystem, specifically developed for the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). Given a source model and the response functions of the telescopes, it is designed to produce realistic simulated observations, in the form of event lists in FITS format, containing a strict super-set of the information provided by standard IXPE level-2 files. The core ixpeobssim simulation capabilities are complemented by a full suite of post-processing applications, allowing for the implementation of complex, polarization-aware analysis pipelines, and facilitating the inter-operation with the standard visualization and analysis tools traditionally in use by the X-ray community. We emphasize that, although a significant part of the framework is specific to IXPE, the modular nature of the underlying implementation makes it potentially straightforward to adapt it to different missions with polarization capabilities.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures.     The Relationship Between Race, Patient Activation, and Working Alliance: Implications for Patient Engagement in Mental Health Care

    This study explored the relationship between race and two key aspects of patient engagement—patient activation and working alliance—among a sample of African-American and White veterans (N = 152) seeking medication management for mental health conditions. After adjusting for demographics, race was significantly associated with patient activation, working alliance, and medication adherence scores. Patient activation was also associated with working alliance. These results provide support for the consideration of race and ethnicity in facilitating patient engagement and patient activation in mental healthcare. Minority patients may benefit from targeted efforts to improve their active engagement in mental healthcare
