The eosinophilic granuloma complex is comprised of three clinical/histological entities: collagenolytic granuloma, eosinophilic plaque and indolent ulcer. In this article, its etiology, clinical aspects and therapy are discussed
A case of uveodermatologic syndrome in a male 2 year old, Spanish Mastiff is described. The clinical signs found, namely uvezitis associated with cutaneus and mucocutaneous depigmentation and erosions of the face, scrotum, perianal region and footpads, were similar to those of the human Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome. The histopathological study showed a lichenoid dermatitis with prevalence of macrophages. The treatment encompassed the administration of prednisone per os and topical ocular therapy with corticosteroids associated with atropin e. After 8 months the cutaneous and mucosal Iesions had completely remitted
A case of primary splenic fibrosarcoma, with multiple metastasis, in a male eight-year old mixed-breed dog is described. The animal showed clinical signs corresponding with an hepatic failure. Necropsy and a subsequent histopathologic study lead to the final diagnosis
An ultrasonographic examination was carried in out 7 dogs with icterus due to an extrahepatic biliary obstruction. This technique allowed the diagnosis in 6 of the dogs. The sonographic appearance of the dilated intra and extrahepatic biliary tree was assessed, as well as the associated lesions, such as the presence of a mass in the pancreatic area, which could guide towards the origin of the obstruction
Nota Corta: Endophytic fungi in healthy soybean leaves
SUMMARY Fungal endophytes were isolated from healthy cultivated soybean leaves at two growth stages (R2-R3 and R4-R5) during the growing season 1997/98. Samples were obtained from a segregating population (F 3 generation) cultivated at the experimental field of the Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias y Forestales, Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Twelve genera of endophytic fungi were isolated and identified. In general, in both growth stages the same species were isolated and most of them did not show significant differences in their infection frequencies. Most of the fungi isolated are cited as soybean pathogens in different places of the world. The most commonly isolated endophytes included Alternaria alternata and Glomerella cingulata (= Colletotrichum gloeosporioides). Key words: endophytes, Glycine max Endophytes are fungi that form inapparent infections within leaves and stems of healthy plant
Structural and ultrastructural hepatic changes in experimental canine leishmaniasis
Six 4 month-old beagles were inoculated with
Leishmania donovani infantum, three of them
intraperitoneally (Group A) and the other three
intravenously (Group B). The animals from Group A
were killed 109, 433 and 592 days after inoculation and
animals from Group B 109, 171 and 334 after
inoculation. The liver of each of them was examined by
means of light and electron microscopy. The lesions
observed in both groups were very similar, but
developed more rapidly in Group B. A chronic hepatitis
appeared due to infection, characterized by the presence
of multiple intralobular granulomas and portal
inflammatory infiltrates consisting of lymphocytes,
plasmocytes and macrophages with a variable number of
amastigotes. The Kupffer cells were hyperplastic and
contained parasites in their cytoplasm. Gradually the
hepatocytes developed a progressive cellular swelling.
which during the end-stages of the process showed itself
with severe nuclear degeneration, disintegration of
cytoplasmic organelles, enlargement of the cytoplasmic
matrix and disruption of the plasma membranes, leading
to cytolysis
Amyloidosis in adrenal glands of hamsters experimentally infected with Leishmania infantum
Thirty 10-week-old hamsters were inoculated
intraperitoneally with Leishmania infantum amastigotes
and were serially killed after 15,30,45,60,75 and
89-90 days. The adrenal glands of each of them were examined
by means of light and electron microscopy. The
cortex and medulla of the adrenal gland showed a progressive
deposition of amyloid, selectively identified by
both optical and ultrastructural techniques. It has been
suggested that adrenal amyloidosis during visceral leishmaniasis
is directly related to a stimulation of the
phagocitary mononuclear system due to the persistence
of the antigenic stimulation of the parasite. In addition to
these deposits, the presence of inflammatory infiltrates
containing lymphocytes, plasmocytes and macrophages
with leishmanias confirmed the establishment of leishmaniasis.
The deposition of the amyloid fibrils finally
leads to the partial destruction of the adrenal parenchym
