On the abundance discrepancy problem in HII regions
The origin of the abundance discrepancy is one of the key problems in the
physics of photoionized nebula. In this work, we analize and discuss data for a
sample of Galactic and extragalactic HII regions where this abundance
discrepancy has been determined. We find that the abundance discrepancy factor
(ADF) is fairly constant and of the order of 2 in all the available sample of
HII regions. This is a rather different behaviour than that observed in
planetary nebulae, where the ADF shows a much wider range of values. We do not
find correlations between the ADF and the O/H, O++/H+ ratios, the ionization
degree, Te(High), Te(Low)/ Te(High), FWHM, and the effective temperature of the
main ionizing stars within the observational uncertainties. These results
indicate that whatever mechanism is producing the abundance discrepancy in HII
regions it does not substantially depend on those nebular parameters. On the
contrary, the ADF seems to be slightly dependent on the excitation energy, a
fact that is consistent with the predictions of the classical temperature
fluctuations paradigm. Finally, we obtain that Te values obtained from OII
recombination lines in HII regions are in agreement with those obtained from
collisionally excited line ratios, a behaviour that is again different from
that observed in planetary nebulae. These similar temperature determinations
are in contradiction with the predictions of the model based on the presence of
chemically inhomogeneous clumps but are consistent with the temperature
fluctuations paradigm. We conclude that all the indications suggest that the
physical mechanism responsible of the abundance discrepancy in HII regions and
planetary nebulae are different.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 9 tables. Accepted for publication in the Ap
The Landau problem and noncommutative quantum mechanics
The conditions under which noncommutative quantum mechanics and the Landau
problem are equivalent theories is explored. If the potential in noncommutative
quantum mechanics is chosen as with defined in the
text, then for the value (that
measures the noncommutative effects of the space), the Landau problem and
noncommutative quantum mechanics are equivalent theories in the lowest Landau
level. For other systems one can find differents values for
and, therefore, the possible bounds for should be searched in
a physical independent scenario. This last fact could explain the differents
bounds for found in the literature.Comment: This a rewritten and corrected version of our previous preprint

Quantum dynamics, dissipation, and asymmetry effects in quantum dot arrays
We study the role of dissipation and structural defects on the time evolution
of quantum dot arrays with mobile charges under external driving fields. These
structures, proposed as quantum dot cellular automata, exhibit interesting
quantum dynamics which we describe in terms of equations of motion for the
density matrix. Using an open system approach, we study the role of asymmetries
and the microscopic electron-phonon interaction on the general dynamical
behavior of the charge distribution (polarization) of such systems. We find
that the system response to the driving field is improved at low temperatures
(and/or weak phonon coupling), before deteriorating as temperature and
asymmetry increase. In addition to the study of the time evolution of
polarization, we explore the linear entropy of the system in order to gain
further insights into the competition between coherent evolution and
dissipative processes.Comment: 11pages,9 figures(eps), submitted to PR
Influence of the photon - neutrino processes on magnetar cooling
The photon-neutrino processes ,
and are investigated
in the presence of a strongly magnetized and dense electron-positron plasma.
The amplitudes of the reactions and
are obtained. In the case of a cold degenerate
plasma contributions of the considering processes to neutrino emissivity are
calculated. It is shown that contribution of the process to neutrino emissivity is supressed in comparision with the
contributions of the processes and
. The constraint on the magnetic field strength in the
magnetar outer crust is obtained.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, 2 PS figures, based on the talk presented by D.A.
