A genetic map of the rapeseed genome comprising a total of 250 markers was constructed using a segregating population of 151 F_1 microspore derived doubled haploid lines (F_1-DH) from a cross between doubled haploid lines of the winter rapeseed varieties 'Mansholt's Hamburger Raps' and 'Samourai'. With the expectpion of a cluster of 3 tightly linked markers and one unlinked marker the mapped markers were distributed on 19 linkage groups corresponding to the 19 chromosomes of rapeseed. The map has a total length of 1519 cM. Using this map, it was possible to localize the two genes that control erucic acid content in the seedoil of rapeseed on linkage groups 6 and 12. In addition, 5 QTLs for glucosinolate content could be mapped on linkage groups 2, 3, 9, 16, and 18. Together, these QTLs explain more than 70% of the phenotypic variation observed for glucosinolate content in the mapping population. Furthermore, 56 QTLs for 22 additional traits, comprising quality traits as well as phenological and morphological traits, could be mapped in the segregating doubled haploid population. The brochure comprises the papers presented at a lecture meeting at which the partners in the BMFT-sponsered research project ''Biotechnology for cultivation of rapeseed for industrial use'' presented the status, current situation, and prospects of their research to potential users, e.g. the agricultural and oleochemical industries. As the papers had to be short, the brochure contains an introductory description of the BMFT research project. Five tasks were provided by this project part I to the cooperative program, with the intent to comprehend the genetic control of fat storage by molecular means and for manipulations in breeding of rapeseed. (1) Using a cross of selected genotypes, a first RFLP linkage map was constructed and genes for phenotypic and performance characters were located in it. (2) Conditions for in vitro culture were optimized for the growth of microspore derived embryoids and genotypic differences were revealed during fat storage processes and made available for early selection in segregating populations of rapeseed embryoids. (3) By reconstitution experiments in cell free systems from embryoids of Cuphea and rapeseed, compartmentation of mean and long chain fatty acids synthesis were investigated and particular conditions of chain elongation were identified and quantified where possible. (4) By repeated backcrossing, monosomic addition lines with Cuphea viscosissima chromosomes were produced in C. palustris and it was determined that one gene is not enough for the prococious discontinuation of chain elongation and at least 2 (and at most 3) chromosomes participate in the specific caprinic acid synthesis in C. viscosissima. (5) Based on this supposition that the character 'high content of mean and short chain fatty acids' is controlled by several genes with complex interactions, diverse experiments on asymmetric protoplast fusion were conducted aiming at the transfer of genes for the fatty acid synthesis of Cuphea into rapeseed; but the wide genetic distance between these two species in the end could not be bridged effectively.
