On Finite Linear Systems Containing Strict Inequalities

This paper deals with linear systems containing finitely many weak and/or strict inequalities, whose solution sets are referred to as evenly convex polyhedral sets. The classical Motzkin theorem states that every (closed and convex) polyhedron is the Minkowski sum of a convex hull of finitely many points and a finitely generated cone. In this sense, similar representations for evenly convex polyhedra have been recently given by using the standard version for classical polyhedra. In this work, we provide a new dual tool that completely characterizes finite linear systems containing strict inequalities and it constitutes the key for obtaining a generalization of Motzkin theorem for evenly convex polyhedra. This research was partially supported by MINECO of Spain and ERDF of EU, Grants MTM2014-59179-C2-1-P and ECO2016-77200-P

On Evenly Convex Sets and Functions

A subset of R^n is said to be evenly convex (e-convex, in breaf) if it is the intersection of some family (possibly empty) of open halfspaces. In this paper, we collect some published results which show that this large class of convex sets enjoys a lot of the well-known properties of the subclass of closed convex sets. We also consider functions whose epigraphs are e-convex sets, the so-called e-convex functions, and we show the main properties of this class of convex functions that contains the important class of lower semicontinuous convex functions.Esta publicación se ha realizado con el apoyo financiero del Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, a través del proyecto MTM2011-29064-C03-02

Evenly convex sets, and evenly quasiconvex functions, revisited

Since its appearance, even convexity has become a remarkable notion in convex analysis. In the fifties, W. Fenchel introduced the evenly convex sets as those sets solving linear systems containing strict inequalities. Later on, in the eighties, evenly quasiconvex functions were introduced as those whose sublevel sets are evenly convex. The significance of even convexity relies on the different areas where it enjoys applications, ranging from convex optimization to microeconomics. In this paper, we review some of the main properties of evenly convex sets and evenly quasiconvex functions, provide further characterizations of evenly convex sets, and present some new results for evenly quasiconvex functions. This research has been partially supported by MINECO of Spain and ERDF of EU, Grants PGC2018-097960-B-C22 and ECO2016-77200-P

Reasons for choosing and completing nursing studies among incoming and outgoing students: A qualitative study

    Get PDF
Background The shortage of nurses is causing instability and crisis in health systems and will continue. The WHO reinforced the importance of recruiting and retaining new students. Authors of various studies recommend the need to identify and understand the reasons for pursuing a nursing degree. Objectives To determine students' preference for nursing studies and to identify the reasons for choosing, continuing, and completing a bachelor's degree in nursing. Design Qualitative, descriptive study. Participants 106 nursing students at the University of Huelva (Spain) participated during their first year (2017) and final year (2021) of the nursing degree. Methods This study was conducted with the same group of students in two phases. Data were collected in writing in a document with open-ended questions and no maximum wordcount. The responses were analysed using content analysis. Results A total of 76.4 % of participants stated that nursing had been their first choice. The main reasons for choosing a nursing degree were associated with fulfilment, and a desire to help others and interact with them. The reasons for completing their studies were primarily related to an interest in providing professional care, showing a deeper and more concrete knowledge of nursing care work. Conclusion For most participants, nursing was their first choice due to a strong intrinsic motivation related to self-satisfaction in helping others. The reasons for completing this degree had extrinsic motivations linked to nursing activity in hospital. Areas such as management, teaching, or research were not interesting to our students. Knowing the causes of this lack of interest could help us attract them to these areas.Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Huelva / CBU

Background: Identifying and acquiring the nursing role is key to the development of nurses’ professional identity. Understanding nursing students’ perceptions in this regard will enable nursing educators to choose teaching strategies that lead to positive development of their students’ professional identity. Objectives: To describe how nursing students perceive the different components of the nursing role at the beginning of the nursing degree. Design: Cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study. Participants/settings: 106 first-year nursing students at the University of Huelva, Spain. Methods: Data on social and academic variables and variables relating to the instrumental and expressive roles were collected via an adapted, pilot-tested questionnaire assessed by experts. Results: For participants, caregiving is the core of the nursing role in the clinical setting, including both technical execution and patient care aspects. They highlighted the disease prevention, health promotion, restoration, and education profiles of nurses rather than their teaching, professional, and technical profiles. They were acquainted with the concept of postgraduate professional development, but were unaware of the academic pathways leading to it. They considered nurses to be decision-makers, who are nevertheless subordinate to doctors. Conclusions: Students did not consider nursing to be an autonomous profession, although they highlighted its decision-making capacity. They placed greater emphasis on the traditional profile of primary care nurses than on their technical profile, and were able to identify the members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Huelva / CBU

Bruise Development and Fruit Response of Pear (cv.'Blanquilla') under Impact Conditions

Pear fruits cv. 'Blanquilla', at various ripening stages, were studied under impact conditions. A 50-6-g spherical steel indentator, with a radius of curvature of 0-94 cm, was dropped on to the fruit from three heights: 4, 6 and 10 cm (0-0199, 0-0299 and 0-0499 J). The variables measured were analyzed. All variables were observed to be related to the impact energy except impact duration, which was related to the fruit firmness. Bruising correlated with impact energy when considering different heights, but not with any specific variable when studying the impact phenomenon at individual heights; however, there was a clear correlation between impact bruising and firmness. Three bruise shapes were observed, corresponding to preclimacteric, climacteric and postclimacteric fruits; a theory for this response is offered. According to the results, the impact response in postclimacteric pear fruits (with firmness values of less than 25 N, and a maturity index above 55) may be explained by the role played by the skin rather than by the pulp
