Sex-differences in the oxygenation levels of intercostales and vastus lateralis muscles during incremental exercise
This study aimed to examine sex differences in oxygen saturation in respiratory (SmO2-m.intercostales) and locomotor muscles (SmO2-m.vastus lateralis) while performing physical exercise. Twenty-five (12 women) healthy and physically active participants were evaluated during an incremental test with a cycle ergometer, while ventilatory variables (lung ventilation [V ̇E], tidal volume [Vt], and respiratory rate [RR]) were acquired through the breath-by-breath method. SmO2 was acquired using the MOXY devices on the m.intercostales and m.vastus lateralis. A two-way ANOVA (sex × time) indicated that women showed a greater significant decrease of SmO2-m.intercostales, and men showed a greater significant decrease of SmO2-m.vastus lateralis. Additionally, women reached a higher level of ΔSmO2-m.intercostales normalized to V ̇E (L·min-1) (p<0.001), whereas men had a higher level of ΔSmO2-m.vastus lateralis normalized to peak workload-to-weight (watts·kg-1, PtW) (p=0.049), as confirmed by Student's t-test. During an incremental physical exercise, women experienced a greater cost of breathing, reflected by greater deoxygenation of the respiratory muscles, whereas men had a higher peripheral load, indicated by greater deoxygenation of the locomotor muscles
Effects of Satureja brevicalyx essential oil inhalation on coping premenstrual syndrome
Introduction: The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of Satureja brevicalyx essential oil inhalation on premenstrual syndrome. Methods: The oils were extracted by hydro-distillation using a modified Clevenger-type apparatus and chemical composition was performed by Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Furthermore, a quasi-experimental study was conducted, where 61 participants were divided in two groups, comprising an experimental with essential oils and a control group with no treatment. Main psychological symptoms were assessed with the used of Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) as well as total score of premenstrual syndrome was evaluated with Premenstrual Syndrome Scale (PMSS). Results: chemical analysis showed that linalool (17.6%) was the main component. All variables showed a decrease in posttest study phase in comparison with pretest in experimental group (p <0.05). A large size effect was observed for anxiety (d = 1.25; Δ = 1.35). Besides, moderate changes were found for depression (d = 0.79; Δ = 0.81) and premenstrual syndrome total score (d = 0.62; Δ = 0.56). Conclusion: The essential oil of Satureja brevicalyx exerts a potencial use, especially for the treatment of psychological symptoms of premenstrual syndrome
Simultaneous inhibition of pan-phosphatidylinositol-3-kinases and MEK as a potential therapeutic strategy in peripheral T-cell lymphomas
Obtained from Haematologica/the Hematology Journal website http://www.haematologica.orgPeripheral T-cell lymphomas are very aggressive hematologic malignancies for which there is no targeted therapy.
New, rational approaches are necessary to improve the very poor outcome in these patients. Phosphatidylinositol-
3-kinase is one of the most important pathways in cell survival and proliferation. We hypothesized that phosphatidylinositol-
3-kinase inhibitors could be rationally selected drugs for treating peripheral T-cell lymphomas.
Several phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase isoforms were inhibited genetically (using small interfering RNA) and pharmacologically
(with CAL-101 and GDC-0941 compounds) in a panel of six peripheral and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma
cell lines. Cell viability was measured by intracellular ATP content; apoptosis and cell cycle changes were
checked by flow cytometry. Pharmacodynamic biomarkers were assessed by western blot. The PIK3CD gene,
which encodes the δ isoform of phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase, was overexpressed in cell lines and primary samples,
and correlated with survival pathways. However, neither genetic nor specific pharmacological inhibition of
phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase δ affected cell survival. In contrast, the pan-phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase inhibitor
GDC-0941 arrested all T-cell lymphoma cell lines in the G1 phase and induced apoptosis in a subset of them. We
identified phospho-GSK3b and phospho-p70S6K as potential biomarkers of phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase
inhibitors. Interestingly, an increase in ERK phosphorylation was observed in some GDC-0941-treated T-cell lymphoma
cell lines, suggesting the presence of a combination of phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase and MEK inhibitors.
A highly synergistic effect was found between the two inhibitors, with the combination enhancing cell cycle arrest
at G0/G1 in all T-cell lymphoma cell lines, and reducing cell viability in primary tumor T cells ex vivo. These results
suggest that the combined treatment of pan-phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase + MEK inhibitors could be more effective
than single phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase inhibitor treatment, and therefore, that this combination could be
of therapeutic value for treating peripheral and cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. This work was supported by grants from the Asociación Española

Co-design of sectoral climate services based on seasonal prediction information in the Mediterranean
We present in this contribution the varied experiences gathered in the co-design of a sectoral climate services collection, developed in the framework of the MEDSCOPE project, which have in common the application of seasonal predictions for the Mediterranean geographical and climatic region. Although the region is affected by low seasonal predictability limiting the skill of seasonal forecasting systems, which historically has hindered the development of downstream services, the project was originally conceived to exploit windows of opportunity with enhanced skill for developing and evaluating climate services in various sectors with high societal impact in the region: renewable energy, hydrology, and agriculture and forestry. The project also served as the scientific branch of the WMO-led Mediterranean Climate Outlook Forum (MedCOF) that had as objective -among others- partnership strengthening on climate services between providers and users within the Mediterranean region. The diversity of the MEDSCOPE experiences in co-designing shows the wide range of involvement and engagement of users in this process across the Mediterranean region, which benefits from the existing solid and organized MedCOF community of climate services providers and users. A common issue among the services described here -and also among other prototypes developed in the project- was related with the communication of forecasts uncertainty and skill for efficiently informing decision-making in practice. All MEDSCOPE project prototypes make use of an internally developed software package containing process-based methods for synthesising seasonal forecast data, as well as basic and advanced tools for obtaining tailored products. Another challenge assumed by the project refers to the demonstration of the economic, social, and environmental value of predictions provided by these MEDSCOPE prototypes. The work described in this paper has received funding from the MEDSCOPE project co-funded by the European Commission as part of ERA4CS, an ERA-NET initiated by JPI Climate, grant agreement 690462
Sex- differences in alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency:Data from the EARCO Registry
Background: Sex and gender influence many aspects of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Limited data are available on this topic in alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD). We therefore aimed to investigate sex issues in the EARCO registry, a prospective, international, observational cohort study. Methods: Baseline data from PiZZ individuals, enrolled in the registry with complete data on sex and smoking history were analysed by group comparisons and binary logistic regression analyses. Results: 1283 patients with AATD, 49.3% women were analysed. Females reported less tobacco consumption (16.8 ± 12.2 vs. 19.6 ± 14.5 PY, p = 0.006), occupational exposures towards gases, dusts or asbestos (p < 0.005 each) and consumed less alcohol (5.5 ± 7.6 vs. 8.4 ± 10.3 u/week, p < 0.001). Females reported COPD (41% vs. 57%, p < 0.001) and liver disease (11% vs. 20%, p < 0.001) less often. However, they had a higher prevalence of bronchiectasis (24% vs. 13%, p < 0.001). Despite better lung function (FEV1%pred. 73.6 ± 29.9 vs. 62.7 ± 29.5, p < 0.001) females reported a similar symptom burden (CAT 13.4 ± 9.5 vs. 12.5 ± 8.9, p = ns) and exacerbation frequency (at least one in the previous year 30% vs. 26%, p = ns) compared to males. In multivariate analyses, female sex was an independent risk factor for exacerbations in the previous year OR 1.6 p = 0.001 in addition to smoking history, COPD, asthma and bronchiectasis and was also identified as risk factors for symptom burden (CAT ≥ 10) OR 1.4 p = 0.014 besides age, BMI, COPD and smoking history. Conclusion: Men had higher rates of COPD and liver disease, women were more likely to have bronchiectasis. Women's higher symptom burden and exacerbation frequency suggest they may need tailored treatment approaches
