Robotics not only play a significant role in medicine, manufacturing, or aerospace industry, but also in education. According to governmental studies carried out in the United States and Europe, careers related to STEM skills like engineering, are constantly increasing worldwide. Due to this, several countries have been implementing STEM education. But, in Colombia this initiative just recently started to take place. Currently, it is possible to find several STEM educational robotic kits on the market such as boost from Lego, Cozmo from Anki, Mbot from Makeblocks and Dash from Make wonder. In this trend, the STEM robotic kit proposed in this document, pretends to be a hardware grounding to implement a whole STEAM program. It intends to encourage children to develop their science, tech, math, and artistic outcomes. Also, the kit offers a differential plus from others because it has two interactive components: an elephant-bot called Eli, a robot easy to assemble inspired in the protection of African elephants; and, an intuitive user interface, called "Experiencia Chamali" made up of three modules. The first one consists of assembly the robot, the second one is designed for developing of spatial perception throughout maze challenges, and the last one is made for test the robot's movements live. Two groups of children between 6 and 11 years old tested the robotic platform. During the activity, the groups reinforced STEM skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving as a conclusion of test results. The children divided the assembly of the elephant-bot into several tasks on their initiative to make an agile construction. Also, in the challenge of the labyrinth, they worked collaboratively on the spatial location. Finally, the members of each group worked as a team decorating the physical labyrinth freely and observing the movements of the "elephant-bot" in this environment

Automatic laser and camera extrinsic calibration for data fusion using road plane

Driving Assistance Systems and Autonomous Driving applications require trustable detections. These demanding requirements need sensor fusion to provide information reliable enough. But data fusion presents the problem of data alignment in both rotation and translation. Laser scanner and video cameras are widely used in sensor fusion. Laser provides operation in darkness, long range detection and accurate measurement but lacks the means for reliable classification due to the limited information provided. The camera provides classification thanks to the amount of data provided but lacks accuracy for measurements and is sensitive to illumination conditions. Data alignment processes require supervised and accurate measurements, that should be performed by experts, or require specific patterns or shapes. This paper presents an algorithm for inter-calibration between the two sensors of our system, requiring only a flat surface for pitch and roll calibration and an obstacle visible for both sensors for determining the yaw. The advantage of this system is that it does not need any particular shape to be located in front of the vehicle apart from a flat surface, which is usually the road. Human Rights and the Pink Tide in Latin America : Which Rights Matter?

Latin America witnessed the election of ‘new Left’ governments in the early 21 st century that, in different ways, sought to open a debate about alternatives to paradigms of neoliberal development. What has this meant for the way that human rights are understood and for patterns of human rights compliance? Using qualitative and quantitative evidence, this article discusses how human rights are imagined and the compliance records of new Left governments through the lens of the three ‘generations’ of human rights — political and civil, social and economic, and cultural and environmental rights. The authors draw in particular on evidence from Andean countries and the Southern Cone. While basic civil and individual liberties are still far from guaranteed, especially in the Andean region, new Left countries show better overall performances in relation to socio-economic rights compared to the past and to other Latin American countries. All new Left governments also demonstrate an increasing interest in ‘third generation’ (cultural and environmental) rights, though this is especially marked in the Andean Left. The authors discuss the tensions around interpretations and categories of human rights, reflect on the stagnation of first generation rights and note the difficulties associated with translating second and third generation rights into policy

In international law we (do not) trust: The persistent rejection of economic and social rights as a manifestation of cynicism

Despite a promising start in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, economic and social rights still retain a second-class status in most national jurisdictions. What explains this reticence with which economic and social rights are (still) regarded? This chapter analyses how the sceptical gaze through which states view economic and social rights legitimises (or attempts to legitimise) government failures to provide for those members of their populace who are in most desperate need, and (unsuccessfully) masks the self-interest that pervades most of international law. The chapter commences with a brief introduction and subsequently proceeds in three subsequent parts. Section 2 demonstrates that cynicism was used as a sword to pierce the normative foundations of economic and social rights generally, and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights particularly in the early days both before and after its adoption leading to economic and social rights’ lower status in the human rights family; Section 3 posits that cynicism has been relied upon as a shield to offer errant states a defence for not meeting their obligations under both international and national (constitutional) economic and social rights norms; and finally Section 4 argues that a certain amount of cynicism is inherent in the history of economic and social rights and how they advanced through the ages, but more optimistically that a light at the end of the tunnel exists because contemporary developments point to less rather than more cynicism in the area of economic and social rights in today’s world

Servicios ecosistémicos de la cuenca alta del río Fucha

112 páginasEl presente estudio, desarrollado por un grupo de estudiantes del Colegio Técnico José Félix Restrepo IED, busca reinterpretar los servicios ecosistémicos de las coberturas vegetales de la cuenca alta del río Fucha, entre las carreras sexta y sexta Este. Este fue el tema principal de la investigación. Contiene información de los recursos naturales que nos ofrecen y que nos benefician no solo a los seres humanos, sino a toda a la biodiversidad que se encuentra sobre la cuenca del río. Entre los servicios se encuentran, por ejemplo, el agua potable limpia y los procesos de descomposición de desechos. Estos se pueden dividir en cuatro categorías amplias como aprovisionamientos (es decir la producción de agua y de alimentos), regulación (el control del clima y de las enfermedades), polinización de cultivos de aves e insectos y, finalmente, la cultural, de la que nos beneficiamos los estudiantes, vecinos y demás personas que hacemos uso de los servicios ecosistémicos que nos ofrece la cuenca. Con esta investigación se busca, por otra parte, conocer un poco más de los grandes beneficios que podemos recibir de la naturaleza y que hacen que la vida humana sea posible
