    A Geo-historical Analysis of Expanding Soybean Frontiers in the Brazilian Cerrado

    Until the 1970s, the Brazilian Cerrado was considered an unsuitable agricultural territory. Logistic and infrastructural issues, combined with soil acidity, made the Cerrado a marginal biome for crop production. However, since the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) was created in 1973, the Cerrado has become a national and international hotspot for the food industry. Such a transformation turned this savannah biome into a landmark for the tropical expansion of commodity frontiers, especially in soy production. This research seeks to analyze data on the historical development of soy production volumes and productivity in the Cerrado, considering the complex interrelations between commodity frontier dynamics and its interface within different Brazilian biomes. Comparing data from the Cerrado and other biomes, our results indicate a rapid expansion of the soybean frontier in most Brazilian biogeographic regions. Moreover, it demonstrates how the growth of soy farming in the Brazilian Cerrado is also affecting other biomes such as the Amazon, influencing local and national policies of agrarian expansion and environmental conservation.Until the 1970s, the Brazilian Cerrado was considered an unsuitable agricultural territory.     A fronteira da mineração em Goiás: história ambiental e os recursos naturais do Cerrado a partir da exploração do ouro em Pilar de Goiás

    Este artigo objetiva identificar conceitos e categorias analíticas fundamentais para a história ambiental no seu diálogo com o Cerrado brasileiro. Considerando que a história ambiental procura lidar com o papel e do lugar da natureza na vida humana, fundamentando-se em abordagens distintas, a saber: a natureza em si, as relações socioambientais e os valores e significativos do mundo natural para as sociedades. E ao considerarmos o Cerrado e as diferentes concepções que tratam e demarcam esse território, consideramos complexas as formas de abordagem da história ambiental. Assim, procuramos, por meio do conceito de fronteira analisar a relação entre sociedade e natureza no Cerrado, tendo como recorte a fronteira da mineração em Goiás, com ênfase no contexto histórico da exploração desse recurso mineral em Pilar de Goiás. Os documentos e as fontes pesquisadas nos ajudam a compreender os processos históricos que evidenciam a relação entre fronteira e natureza em Goiás. Abstract: This article intends to identify concepts and analytical categories fundamental to environmental history in its dialogue with the Brazilian Cerrado. Considering that environmental history seeks to deal with the role and place of nature in human life, based on different approaches, namely: nature itself, socio-environmental relations and the values and significance of the natural world for societies. And when we consider the Cerrado and the different conceptions that treat and demarcate this territory, we consider complex ways of approaching environmental history. Thus, we seek, through the concept of frontier to analyze the relationship between society and nature in the Cerrado, taking as a cut the frontier of mining in Goiás, with emphasis on the historical context of exploitation of this mineral resource in the municipality of Pilar de Goiás. The documents and sources researched help us to understand the historical processes that evidence the relationship between frontier and nature in Goiás State. Keywords: Environmental history.     Perfil bioquímico de ovinos alimentados com níveis de inclusão do resíduo úmido de cervejaria

    O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os parâmetros bioquímicos de ovinos alimentados com níveis de inclusão do resíduo úmido de cervejaria na dieta. Foram utilizados 20 animais machos inteiros, mestiços da raça Santa Inês com aproximadamente oito meses de idade, pesando 18±2,5 kg de peso vivo (PV). Os tratamentos foram constituídos por níveis de inclusão do resíduo úmido de cervejaria em dietas para ovinos nas proporções de 0, 10, 20 e 30%. As amostragens sanguíneas foram coletadas no final do experimento em 4 tempos, sendo a primeira coleta realizada antes do fornecimento da dieta aos animais, a segunda foi pós-prandial (duas horas após a primeira), a terceira cinco horas após a primeira e a quarta com oito horas de intervalo da primeira, através de venopunção da jugular. Foram determinadas as atividades séricas das seguintes concentrações: Glicose, Proteínas totais, Albumina, Aspartatoaminotransferase-AST, Gamaglutamiltransferase-GGT, FosfataseAlcalina-ALP, Colesterol, Ureia e Creatinina. Na avaliação do perfil enzimático da AST, ALP e GGT não houve diferença estatística significativa (P>0,05) entre os tratamentos estudados. Na avaliação do perfil proteico, a atividade sérica da ureia (mg/dL) foi relativamente elevada quando comparado aos valores de referência. Os parâmetros séricos das proteínas totais não diferiram significativamente (p > 0,05). Na avaliação do perfil energético, os valores de colesterol obtidos neste experimento apresentaram diferenças significativas estatisticamente (p <0,05), porém para níveis de glicose não houve diferença significativa. O resíduo úmido de cervejaria na dieta de ovinos, considerando os parâmetros bioquímicos, pode ser usado como coproduto, pois não prejudica a fisiologia do animal

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a flexible family visitation policy in the ICU reduces the incidence of delirium. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Cluster-crossover randomized clinical trial involving patients, family members, and clinicians from 36 adult ICUs with restricted visiting hours (<4.5 hours per day) in Brazil. Participants were recruited from April 2017 to June 2018, with follow-up until July 2018. INTERVENTIONS: Flexible visitation (up to 12 hours per day) supported by family education (n = 837 patients, 652 family members, and 435 clinicians) or usual restricted visitation (median, 1.5 hours per day; n = 848 patients, 643 family members, and 391 clinicians). Nineteen ICUs started with flexible visitation, and 17 started with restricted visitation. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Primary outcome was incidence of delirium during ICU stay, assessed using the CAM-ICU. Secondary outcomes included ICU-acquired infections for patients; symptoms of anxiety and depression assessed using the HADS (range, 0 [best] to 21 [worst]) for family members; and burnout for ICU staff (Maslach Burnout Inventory). RESULTS: Among 1685 patients, 1295 family members, and 826 clinicians enrolled, 1685 patients (100%) (mean age, 58.5 years; 47.2% women), 1060 family members (81.8%) (mean age, 45.2 years; 70.3% women), and 737 clinicians (89.2%) (mean age, 35.5 years; 72.9% women) completed the trial. The mean daily duration of visits was significantly higher with flexible visitation (4.8 vs 1.4 hours; adjusted difference, 3.4 hours [95% CI, 2.8 to 3.9]; P < .001). The incidence of delirium during ICU stay was not significantly different between flexible and restricted visitation (18.9% vs 20.1%; adjusted difference, −1.7% [95% CI, −6.1% to 2.7%]; P = .44). Among 9 prespecified secondary outcomes, 6 did not differ significantly between flexible and restricted visitation, including ICU-acquired infections (3.7% vs 4.5%; adjusted difference, −0.8% [95% CI, −2.1% to 1.0%]; P = .38) and staff burnout (22.0% vs 24.8%; adjusted difference, −3.8% [95% CI, −4.8% to 12.5%]; P = .36). For family members, median anxiety (6.0 vs 7.0; adjusted difference, −1.6 [95% CI, −2.3 to −0.9]; P < .001) and depression scores (4.0 vs 5.0; adjusted difference, −1.2 [95% CI, −2.0 to −0.4]; P = .003) were significantly better with flexible visitation. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Among patients in the ICU, a flexible family visitation policy, vs standard restricted visiting hours, did not significantly reduce the incidence of delirium

    Brazilian Flora 2020: Leveraging the power of a collaborative scientific network

    International audienceThe shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiversity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxonomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impediment and the biodiversity crisis are widely recognized, highlighting the urgent need for reliable taxonomic data. Over the past decade, numerous countries worldwide have devoted considerable effort to Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), which called for the preparation of a working list of all known plant species by 2010 and an online world Flora by 2020. Brazil is a megadiverse country, home to more of the world's known plant species than any other country. Despite that, Flora Brasiliensis, concluded in 1906, was the last comprehensive treatment of the Brazilian flora. The lack of accurate estimates of the number of species of algae, fungi, and plants occurring in Brazil contributes to the prevailing taxonomic impediment and delays progress towards the GSPC targets. Over the past 12 years, a legion of taxonomists motivated to meet Target 1 of the GSPC, worked together to gather and integrate knowledge on the algal, plant, and fungal diversity of Brazil. Overall, a team of about 980 taxonomists joined efforts in a highly collaborative project that used cybertaxonomy to prepare an updated Flora of Brazil, showing the power of scientific collaboration to reach ambitious goals. This paper presents an overview of the Brazilian Flora 2020 and provides taxonomic and spatial updates on the algae, fungi, and plants found in one of the world's most biodiverse countries. We further identify collection gaps and summarize future goals that extend beyond 2020. Our results show that Brazil is home to 46,975 native species of algae, fungi, and plants, of which 19,669 are endemic to the country. The data compiled to date suggests that the Atlantic Rainforest might be the most diverse Brazilian domain for all plant groups except gymnosperms, which are most diverse in the Amazon. However, scientific knowledge of Brazilian diversity is still unequally distributed, with the Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado being the most intensively sampled and studied biomes in the country. In times of “scientific reductionism”, with botanical and mycological sciences suffering pervasive depreciation in recent decades, the first online Flora of Brazil 2020 significantly enhanced the quality and quantity of taxonomic data available for algae, fungi, and plants from Brazil.
