    Angular Momentum of the BTZ Black Hole in the Teleparallel Geometry

    We carry out the Hamiltonian formulation of the three- dimensional gravitational teleparallelism without imposing the time gauge condition, by rigorously performing the Legendre transform. Definition of the gravitational angular momentum arises by suitably interpreting the integral form of the constraint equation Gama^ik=0 as an angular momentum equation.     Absolute Calibration of the Radio Astronomy Flux Density Scale at 22 to 43 GHz Using Planck

    The Planck mission detected thousands of extragalactic radio sources at frequencies from 28 to 857 GHz. Planck's calibration is absolute (in the sense that it is based on the satellite's annual motion around the Sun and the temperature of the cosmic microwave background), and its beams are well characterized at sub-percent levels. Thus Planck's flux density measurements of compact sources are absolute in the same sense. We have made coordinated VLA and ATCA observations of 65 strong, unresolved Planck sources in order to transfer Planck's calibration to ground-based instruments at 22, 28, and 43 GHz. The results are compared to microwave flux density scales currently based on planetary observations. Despite the scatter introduced by the variability of many of the sources, the flux density scales are determined to 1-2% accuracy. At 28 GHz, the flux density scale used by the VLA runs 3.6% +- 1.0% below Planck values; at 43 GHz, the discrepancy increases to 6.2% +- 1.4% for both ATCA and the VLA.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures and 4 table

    Mapping the expansion history of the universe is a compelling task of physical cosmology, especially in the context of the observational evidence for the recent acceleration of the universe, which demonstrates that canonical theories of cosmology and particle physics are incomplete and that there is new physics still to be discovered. Cosmography is a phenomenological approach to cosmology, where (with some caveats) physical quantities are expanded as a Taylor series in the cosmological redshift zz, or analogous parameters such as the rescaled redshift y=z/(1+z)y=z/(1+z) or the logarithmic redshift x=ln(1+z)x=\ln{(1+z)}. Moreover, the redshift drift of objects following cosmological expansion provides a model-independent observable, detectable by facilities currently under construction, {\it viz.} the Extremely Large Telescope and the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (at least in its full configuration). Here we use simulated redshift drift measurements from the two facilities to carry out an assessment of the cosmological impact and model discriminating power of redshift drift cosmography. We find that the combination of measurements from the two facilities can provide a stringent test of the Λ\LambdaCDM paradigm, and that overall the logarithmic based expansions of the spectroscopic velocity drift are the most reliable ones, performing better than analogous expansions in the redshift or the rescaled redshift: the former nominally gives the smaller error bars for the cosmographic coefficients but is vulnerable to biases in the higher order terms (in other words, it is only reliable at low redshifts), while the latter always performs poorly.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables; in press at MNRA

    Pathway Weathering in Granitoid Rocks from Central Region of Angola: Geochemical and Mineralogical Data

    The Central Region of Angola is characterized by the abundance of granitoid rocks, whose weathering “in situ” originated the so-called residual soils. The textural, geochemical and mineralogical properties of these soils depend not only on the chemical composition of parent rock, but mainly on the local climatic and geomorphological characteristics. In the study area, sampling sites were selected, which extend from the region of Kwanza- Norte (Kassenda, Dondo) through Kwanza-Sul (Cangulo, Quibala and Waco Kungo) until the plateau of Huambo, where samples of fresh rock, weathered rock and its residual soil were collected along each weathering profile. Chemical analytical data were determined using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis of the major and minor elements, whereas mineralogical data were determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), on the samples of rock and on the respective residual soil. The results obtained and their comparative analysis between the sampling sites, as well as along each weathering profile is presented. This paper allows contributing to the knowledge of the geochemical weathering in tropical areas, as is the case of Angola

    Fermionic dark matter-photon quantum interaction: A mechanism for darkness

    ELKO fermionic fields are prime candidates to describe dark matter, due to their intrinsic neutral nature, as they are constructed as eigenstates of the charge conjugation operator with dual helicity. To formulate the meaning of the darkness, the ELKO-photon coupling is scrutinized with a Pauli-like interaction, and the path integral is then formulated from the phase space constraint structure. Ward-Takahashi-like identities and Schwinger-Dyson equations, together with renormalizability, are employed to investigate a phenomenological mechanism to avoid external light signals. Accordingly, the non-polarized pair annihilation and Compton-like processes are shown to vanish at the limit of small scattering angles even if considering 1-loop radiative corrections, reinforcing the ELKO dark matter interpretation. However, ELKO interactions with nucleons are still possible. Motivated by recent nucleon-recoil experiments to detect dark matter, we furnish a consistent theoretical setup to describe ELKO-photon interaction compatible with the prevalence of darkness.Comment: 42 pages, 6 figure
