Dry anaerobic digestion of organic waste: A review of operational parameters and their impact on process performance.
open access articleDry digestion is a suitable technology for treating organic wastes with varying composition such as the organic
fraction of municipal solids waste. Yet, there is a need for further research to overcome some of the disadvantages
associated with the high total solids content of the process. Optimisation of inoculum to substrate
ratio, feedstock composition and size, liquid recirculation, bed compaction and use of bulking agents are some of
the parameters that need further investigation in batch dry anaerobic digestion, to limit localised inhibition
effects and avoid process instability. In addition, further attention on the relation between feedstock composition,
organic loading rate and mixing regimes is required for continuous dry anaerobic digestion systems. This
paper highlights all the areas where knowledge is scarce and value can be added to increase dry anaerobic
digestion performance and expansion
IENE 9 project: developing a culturally competent and compassionate LGBT + curriculum in health and social care education
Introduction
The IENE projects (2008–2022) aim to promote a model for developing intercultural dialogue and enhance the ability to provide culturally competent and compassionate care for the health and social care professionals at national and European levels. The IENE 9 project, named “Developing a culturally competent and compassionate LGBT + curriculum in health and social care education,” builds on the work developed in the previous IENE projects and emphasizes the importance of addressing LGBT + issues in health and social care education.
Method
Through an innovative Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), professionals will learn the skills to work toward building an LGBT + inclusive health and social care system.
Result
Notwithstanding the progress made in recent years on LGBT + issues, research indicates that too little attention has been given to LGBT + needs in health and social care settings, and these remain substantial issues that are often ignored.
Conclusion
This letter to the editor aims to present the IENE 9 project given that greater efforts are needed to improve professionals’ skills regarding sexual and gender minority population. We strive to continue our efforts in promoting the well-being and mental health of LGBT + people in health and social care education
Human hippocampal theta oscillations reflect sequential dependencies during spatial planning
Movement-related theta oscillations in rodent hippocampus coordinate ‘forward sweeps’ of location-specific neural activity that could be used to evaluate spatial trajectories online. This raises the possibility that increases in human hippocampal theta power accompany the evaluation of upcoming spatial choices. To test this hypothesis, we measured neural oscillations during a spatial planning task that closely resembles a perceptual decision-making paradigm. In this task, participants searched visually for the shortest path between a start and goal location in novel mazes that contained multiple choice points, and were subsequently asked to make a spatial decision at one of those choice points. We observed ~4–8 Hz hippocampal/medial temporal lobe theta power increases specific to sequential planning that were negatively correlated with subsequent decision speed, where decision speed was inversely correlated with choice accuracy. These results implicate the hippocampal theta rhythm in decision tree search during planning in novel environments
