Enhancing Science Return During the Rapid Expansion of IRSA
The NASA/IPAC Infrared Science Archive is undergoing a rapid expansion in the portfolio of missions for which we serve data, including the recent additions of the Spitzer Heritage Archive, the WISE archive, and NASA's Planck archive. This expansion has led to more than an order of magnitude increase in data holdings within a few years, and the inclusion of catalogs up to 10 billion rows. As a result, IRSA has a special opportunity to grow its services to support not only individual IR missions, but to optimize the synergy between them. We discuss the ways in which we enhance the science return from multiple IR data sets, including data discovery, moving object âprecovery,â and image cross-comparison
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Grilled Meats from Restaurants
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are a group of lipophilic compounds that can be generated during the preparation of food items at elevated temperatures. They are regarded as potentially genotoxic and carcinogenic to human beings, related to increased incidence of breast and colorectal cancers, oxidative DNA injury, and bad effects on children neuro-differentiation. Thus, they are considered a public health concerns. A total of thirty samples of grilled beef steak, beef kofta and chicken (ten each) were collected from different restaurants. The samples were extracted by magnesium sulfate and sodium acetate in acetonitrile then purified in magnesium sulfate, primary, secondary amine and silica gel, and finally measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Benzo[a]pyrene was recorded with the highest average level (3.63”g/kg) in grilled kofta samples, but it was not detected in chicken samples. On the other hand, PAH4, PAH8 and ƩPAHs content were more abundant in grilled beef steak (5.32, 9.97 and 56.91”g/kg). Meanwhile, they recorded the least concentrations of grilled chicken from different restaurants. Furthermore, benzo[a]pyrene exceeded the permissible limits of the European Commission and Egyptian National Food Safety Authority in grilled kofta samples; further studies are needed to investigate the limits of exposure to these harmful compounds from meats and other food items
Orphans of the AIDS epidemic? The extent, nature and circumstances of child-headed households in South Africa
There is widespread concern that the number of children living in âchild-headed householdsâ is rapidly increasing as a result of AIDS-related adult mortality in much of sub-Saharan Africa. Based on analyses of data from several representative national surveys over the period 2000â2007, this paper examines the extent to which this is the case in South Africa. It explores trends in the number of children living in child-only households and characterises these children relative to children living in households with adults (mixed-generation households). The findings indicate that the proportion of child-only households is relatively small (0.47% in 2006) and does not appear to be increasing. In addition, the vast majority (92.1%) of children resident in child-only households have a living parent. The findings raise critical questions about the circumstances leading to the formation of child-only households and highlight that they cannot for the main part be ascribed to HIV orphaning. Nonetheless, the number of children living in this household form is not insignificant, and their circumstances, when compared with children in mixed-generation households, indicate a range of challenges, including greater economic vulnerability and inadequate service access. We argue that a solitary focus on the HIV epidemic and its related orphaning as the cause of child-only households masks other important issues for consideration in addressing their needs, and risks the development of inappropriate policies, programmes and interventions
IRSA's New Look: Design Considerations
The NASA/IPAC Infrared Science Archive (IRSA) undertook a major upgrade to its website and user experience this year. The work was motivated by the need to facilitate access to a growing number of astronomical data sets and exploration tools. The guiding principle of the redesign was to focus on the most important items, while providing easy access to the full set of IRSA's holdings and services. We discuss the redesign process and the key features of the new website
Three-dimensional kinematic motion analysis of a daily activity drinking from a glass: a pilot study
BACKGROUND: Development of reliable and objective evaluation methods is required, particularly for natural and goal-oriented upper-extremity tasks. Three-dimensional imaging measurement techniques have turned out to be a powerful tool for a quantitative and qualitative assessment of multijoint movements. The purpose of this study was to develop and test a method of three-dimensional motion analysis for the activity "drinking from a glass" and describe the drinking task with kinematic variables in control subjects. METHODS: A protocol was developed for the drinking activity including the set-up of cameras and positions of the markers and the subject. The drinking task included reaching, forward transport with glass, drinking, back transport and returning the hand to the initial position. An optoelectronic system was used for the three-dimensional kinematic motion capture. Movement times, velocities, joint angles and interjoint coordination for shoulder and elbow were computed and analyzed for twenty control subjects. Test-retest consistency was evaluated for six subjects. RESULTS: The test protocol showed good consistency in test-retest. Phase definitions for the drinking task were defined and verified. Descriptive kinematic variables were obtained for movement times, positions, velocities and joint angles for shoulder and elbow joint. Interjoint coordination between shoulder and elbow joint in reaching phase showed a high correlation. CONCLUSION: This study provides a detailed description of the three-dimensional kinematic analysis of the drinking task. Our approach to investigate and analyze a goal-oriented daily activity has a great clinical potential. Consequently, the next step is to use and test this protocol on persons with impairments and disabilities from upper extremities
Experimental and Modeling Studies of the Characteristics of Liquid Biofuels for Enhanced Combustion
The objectives of this project have been to develop a comprehensive set of fundamental data regarding the combustion behavior of biodiesel fuels and appropriately associated model fuels that may represent biodiesels in automotive engineering simulation. Based on the fundamental study results, an auxiliary objective was to identify differentiating characteristics of molecular fuel components that can be used to explain different fuel behavior and that may ultimately be used in the planning and design of optimal fuel-production processes. The fuels studied in this project were BQ-9000 certified biodiesel fuels that are certified for use in automotive engine applications. Prior to this project, there were no systematic experimental flame data available for such fuels. One of the key goals has been to generate such data, and to use this data in developing and verifying effective kinetic models. The models have then been reduced through automated means to enable multi-dimensional simulation of the combustion characteristics of such fuels in reciprocating engines. Such reliable kinetics models, validated against fundamental data derived from laminar flames using idealized flow models, are key to the development and design of optimal engines, engine operation and fuels. The models provide direct information about the relative contribution of different molecular constituents to the fuel performance and can be used to assess both combustion and emissions characteristics. During this project, we completed a major and thorough validation of a set of biodiesel surrogate components, allowing us to begin to evaluate the fundamental combustion characteristics for B100 fuels
No major flaws in "Identification of individuals by trait prediction using whole-genome sequencing data"
In a recently published PNAS article, we studied the identifiability of genomic samples using machine learning methods [Lippert et al., 2017]. In a response, Erlich [2017]
argued that our work contained major flaws. The main technical critique of Erlich [2017] builds on a simulation experiment that shows that our proposed algorithm, which
uses only a genomic sample for identification, performed no better than a strategy that uses demographic variables. Below, we show why this comparison is misleading and
provide a detailed discussion of the key critical points in our analyses that have been brought up in Erlich [2017] and in the media. Further, not only faces may be derived
from DNA, but a wide range of phenotypes and demographic variables. In this light, the main contribution of Lippert et al. [2017] is an algorithm that identifies genomes of
individuals by combining multiple DNA-based predictive models for a myriad of traits
Some Results on Cubic and Higher Order Extensions of the Poincar\'e Algebra
In these lectures we study some possible higher order (of degree greater than
two) extensions of the Poincar\'e algebra. We first give some general
properties of Lie superalgebras with some emphasis on the supersymmetric
extension of the Poincar\'e algebra or Supersymmetry. Some general features on
the so-called Wess-Zumino model (the simplest field theory invariant under
Supersymmetry) are then given. We further introduce an additional algebraic
structure called Lie algebras of order F, which naturally comprise the concepts
of ordinary Lie algebras and superalgebras. This structure enables us to define
various non-trivial extensions of the Poincar\'e algebra. These extensions are
studied more precisely in two different contexts. The first algebra we are
considering is shown to be an (infinite dimensional) higher order extension of
the Poincar\'e algebra in dimensions and turns out to induce a symmetry
which connects relativistic anyons. The second extension we are studying is
related to a specific finite dimensional Lie algebra of order three, which is a
cubic extension of the Poincar\'e algebra in space-time dimensions.
Invariant Lagrangians are constructed.Comment: Mini course given at the Workshop higher symmetries in physics,
