The Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function at the Dawn of Gaia
The [O III] 5007 Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function (PNLF) is an excellent
extragalactic standard candle. In theory, the PNLF method should not work at
all, since the luminosities of the brightest planetary nebulae (PNe) should be
highly sensitive to the age of their host stellar population. Yet the method
appears robust, as it consistently produces < 10% distances to galaxies of all
Hubble types, from the earliest ellipticals to the latest-type spirals and
irregulars. It is therefore uniquely suited for cross-checking the results of
other techniques and finding small offsets between the Population I and
Population II distance ladders. We review the calibration of the method and
show that the zero points provided by Cepheids and the Tip of the Red Giant
Branch are in excellent agreement. We then compare the results of the PNLF with
those from Surface Brightness Fluctuation measurements, and show that, although
both techniques agree in a relative sense, the latter method yields distances
that are ~15% larger than those from the PNLF. We trace this discrepancy back
to the calibration galaxies and argue that, due to a small systematic error
associated with internal reddening, the true distance scale likely falls
between the extremes of the two methods. We also demonstrate how PNLF
measurements in the early-type galaxies that have hosted Type Ia supernovae can
help calibrate the SN Ia maximum magnitude-rate of decline relation. Finally,
we discuss how the results from space missions such as Kepler and Gaia can help
our understanding of the PNLF phenomenon and improve our knowledge of the

NBEAL2 is required for neutrophil and NK cell function and pathogen defense.
Mutations in the human NBEAL2 gene cause gray platelet syndrome (GPS), a bleeding diathesis characterized by a lack of α granules in platelets. The functions of the NBEAL2 protein have not been explored outside platelet biology, but there are reports of increased frequency of infection and abnormal neutrophil morphology in patients with GPS. We therefore investigated the role of NBEAL2 in immunity by analyzing the phenotype of Nbeal2-deficient mice. We found profound abnormalities in the Nbeal2-deficient immune system, particularly in the function of neutrophils and NK cells. Phenotyping of Nbeal2-deficient neutrophils showed a severe reduction in granule contents across all granule subsets. Despite this, Nbeal2-deficient neutrophils had an enhanced phagocyte respiratory burst relative to Nbeal2-expressing neutrophils. This respiratory burst was associated with increased expression of cytosolic components of the NADPH oxidase complex. Nbeal2-deficient NK cells were also dysfunctional and showed reduced degranulation. These abnormalities were associated with increased susceptibility to both bacterial (Staphylococcus aureus) and viral (murine CMV) infection in vivo. These results define an essential role for NBEAL2 in mammalian immunity
Eros is a novel transmembrane protein that controls the phagocyte respiratory burst and is essential for innate immunity
The phagocyte respiratory burst is crucial for innate immunity. The transfer of electrons to oxygen is mediated by a membrane-bound heterodimer, comprising gp91 and p22 subunits. Deficiency of either subunit leads to severe immunodeficiency. We describe Eros (essential for reactive oxygen species), a protein encoded by the previously undefined mouse gene , and show that it is essential for host defense via the phagocyte NAPDH oxidase. Eros is required for expression of the NADPH oxidase components, gp91 and p22. Consequently, -deficient mice quickly succumb to infection. also contributes to the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETS) and impacts on the immune response to melanoma metastases. is an ortholog of the plant protein Ycf4, which is necessary for expression of proteins of the photosynthetic photosystem 1 complex, itself also an NADPH oxio-reductase. We thus describe the key role of the previously uncharacterized protein Eros in host defense.D.C. A MODEST review
We present an account of the state of the art in the fields explored by the
research community invested in 'Modeling and Observing DEnse STellar systems'.
For this purpose, we take as a basis the activities of the MODEST-17
conference, which was held at Charles University, Prague, in September 2017.
Reviewed topics include recent advances in fundamental stellar dynamics,
numerical methods for the solution of the gravitational N-body problem,
formation and evolution of young and old star clusters and galactic nuclei,
their elusive stellar populations, planetary systems, and exotic compact
objects, with timely attention to black holes of different classes of mass and
their role as sources of gravitational waves.
Such a breadth of topics reflects the growing role played by collisional
stellar dynamics in numerous areas of modern astrophysics. Indeed, in the next
decade, many revolutionary instruments will enable the derivation of positions
and velocities of individual stars in the Milky Way and its satellites and will
detect signals from a range of astrophysical sources in different portions of
the electromagnetic and gravitational spectrum, with an unprecedented
sensitivity. On the one hand, this wealth of data will allow us to address a
number of long-standing open questions in star cluster studies; on the other
hand, many unexpected properties of these systems will come to light,
stimulating further progress of our understanding of their formation and

Deep generative models for fast photon shower simulation in ATLAS
The need for large-scale production of highly accurate simulated event samples for the extensive physics programme of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider motivates the development of new simulation techniques. Building on the recent success of deep learning algorithms, variational autoencoders and generative adversarial networks are investigated for modelling the response of the central region of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter to photons of various energies. The properties of synthesised showers are compared with showers from a full detector simulation using geant4. Both variational autoencoders and generative adversarial networks are capable of quickly simulating electromagnetic showers with correct total energies and stochasticity, though the modelling of some shower shape distributions requires more refinement. This feasibility study demonstrates the potential of using such algorithms for ATLAS fast calorimeter simulation in the future and shows a possible way to complement current simulation techniques
THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT PLANTING DEPTHS ON SIZE, SHAPE AND WEIGHT OF DASHEEN CORMS
The current recommendation for growing dasheen (Colocasia esculenta) in Dominica for export, failed to produce corms of the desired standard for European and some Caribbean markets - corms weighing 0.9-1.3 Kg of uniform size and pear-shaped. Since plant density and planting depth are known to influence corm characteristics, an initial evaluation was made of the effect of varying the planting depth (15, 20, 25 and 30 cm) while maintaining the recommended density of 0.6 m x 0.6 m. Planting depths of 25-30 cm produced the reguired market standards with respect to size and weight but the shape was not acceptable. The desirable shape was produced using a planting depth of 28 cm but then the size and weight did not come up to standard. Planting depths of 15 cm did not give any satisfactory results
An Uncertainty-aware Workflow for Keyhole Surgery Planning using Hierarchical Image Semantics
Keyhole surgeries become increasingly important in clinical daily routine as they help minimizing the damage of a patient\u27s healthy tissue. The planning of keyhole surgeries is based on medical imaging and an important factor that influences the surgeries\u27 success. Due to the image reconstruction process, medical image data contains uncertainty that exacerbates the planning of a keyhole surgery. In this paper we present a visual workfiow that helps clinicians to examine and compare different surgery paths as well as visualizing the patients\u27 affected tissue. The analysis is based on the concept of hierarchical image semantics, that segment the underlying image data with respect to the input images\u27 uncertainty and the users understanding of tissue composition. Users can define arbitrary surgery paths that they need to investigate further. The defined paths can be queried by a rating function to identify paths that fulfill user-defined properties. The workfiow allows a visual inspection of the affected tissues and its substructures. Therefore, the workfiow includes a linked view system indicating the three-dimensional location of selected surgery paths as well as how these paths affect the patients tissue. To show the effectiveness of the presented approach, we applied it to the planning of a keyhole surgery of a brain tumor removal and a kneecap surgery. © 2018 Published by Elsevier B.V. on behalf of Zhejiang University and Zhejiang University Press
