Sick of work or too sick to work? Evidence on health shocks and early retirement from the BHPS
We follow individuals as they retire using discrete-time hazard models applied to a stock sample from 12 waves of the British Household Panel Survey. Results confirm that health shocks are a determinant of retirement age and are quantitatively more important than pension entitlement. This is the case for both men and women and is observed for both a measure of health limitations and a measure of latent health status obtained from a generalized ordered probit model. Further, our results provide evidence that, for women, the health status of their partner impacts on their retirement decisions; an effect that is not evident for men
Fabrication and wear test of a continuous fiber/particulate composite total surface hip replacement
Continuous fiber woven E-glass composite femoral shells having the ame elastic properties as bone were fabricated. The shells were then encrusted with filled epoxy wear resistant coatings and run dry against ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene acetabular cups in 42,000 and 250,000 cycle were tests on a total hip simulator. The tribological characteristics of these shells atriculating with the acetabular cups are comparable to a vitallium bal articulating with an ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene cup

Public contracts as accountability mechanisms: assuring quality in public healthcare in England and Wales
Contracting in the public sector is designed to enhance the accountability of service providers to their funders. The idea is that quality is improved by the use of service specifications, monitoring of performance and imposition of contractual sanctions. Socio-legal and economic theories of contract indicate that it will be difficult to make and enforce contracts to achieve this. The results of a study of National Health Services contracting in England and Wales are reported. We conclude that contracts alone are not sufficient to improve accountability – collibration of various regulatory measures (including more hierarchical mechanisms such as performance targets) is required
CLTs and asymptotic variance of time-sampled Markov chains
For a Markov transition kernel P and a probability distribution
μ on nonnegative integers, a time-sampled Markov chain evolves according
to the transition kernel Pμ = Σkμ(k)Pk. In this note we obtain CLT
conditions for time-sampled Markov chains and derive a spectral formula
for the asymptotic variance. Using these results we compare efficiency of
Barker's and Metropolis algorithms in terms of asymptotic variance
Cell wall arabinan is essential for guard cell function
Stomatal guard cells play a key role in the ability of plants to survive on dry land, because their movements regulate the exchange of gases and water vapor between the external environment and the interior of the plant. The walls of these cells are exceptionally strong and must undergo large and reversible deformation during stomatal opening and closing. The molecular basis of the unique strength and flexibility of guard cell walls is unknown. We show that degradation of cell wall arabinan prevents either stomatal opening or closing. This locking of guard cell wall movements can be reversed if homogalacturonan is subsequently removed from the wall. We suggest that arabinans maintain flexibility in the cell wall by preventing homogalacturonan polymers from forming tight associations
Multi-Wavelength Study of Sgr A*: The Short Time Scale Variability
To understand the correlation and the radiation mechanism of flare emission
in different wavelength bands, we have coordinated a number of telescopes to
observe SgrA* simultaneously. We focus only on one aspect of the preliminary
results of our multi-wavelength observing campaigns, namely, the short time
scale variability of emission from SgrA* in near-IR, X-ray and radio
wavelengths. The structure function analysis indicate most of the power
spectral density is detected on hourly time scales in all wavelength bands. We
also report minute time scale variability at 7 and 13mm placing a strong
constraint on the nature of the variable emission. The hourly time scale
variability can be explained in the context of a model in which the peak
frequency of emission shifts toward lower frequencies as a self-absorbed
synchrotron source expands adiabatically near the acceleration site. The short
time scale variability, on the other hand, places a strong constraint on the
size of the emitting region. Assuming that rapid minute time scale fluctuations
of the emission is optically thick in radio wavelength, light travel arguments
requires relativistic particle energy, thus suggesting the presence of outflow

Hypocalcification and hypoplasia in primary teeth of pre-school children from different ethnic groups in South Africa
A study was completed in 1985/86 which examined the dental health of pre-school children from different ethnic groups and communities in South Africa: rural black, urban black, urban colored, urban Indian, and urban white. Enamel defects were recorded in primary teeth by use of the HHI, an index developed to measure hypocalcification and hypoplasia of enamel. The findings showed that colored children had the greatest number of enamel defects. The teeth most commonly affected were the maxillary anterior teeth and mandibular molar teeth. It is suggested that further epidemiological studies utilizing the HHI should be undertaken in pre-school children, especially from developing countries, to gain more information on the causes of enamel defects in the primary dentition and the possible use of such findings to predict nutritional health of individuals.TS2016.http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/0895937489003002070
