Information Systems Undergraduate Degree Project: Gaining a Better Understanding of the Final Year Project Module
The place of an individual project in the final year of Information Systems (IS) undergraduate degrees at UK universities is well established. In this paper we compare the final year project modules at four UK universities: the University of Brighton, the University of South Wales, University of West London and the University of Westminster. We find that the aims of the projects are similar, emphasising the application of the knowledge and skills from the taught element of their course in a complex development project, often including interactions with a real client. Although we show in this analysis that projects serve a similar purpose in the IS degree courses, the associated learning outcomes and the assessment practice varies across the institutions. We identify some gaps in the skills and abilities that are not being assessed. In further work we are planning to consult final year students undertaking their projects and their supervisors, in order to gain an understanding of how project assessment criteria are actually put to use
Analysis of spread multi-jet VTOL aircraft in hover
An investigation of vertical takeoff and landing aircraft lift losses in hover was conducted to evaluate a method for a simplified test technique. Three flat plate models were tested to determine their usefulness in predicting hover characteristics by comparing results between plate and three-dimensional models. Data obtained for the plate models were correlated to three-dimensional results by the application of a geometrical equivalent height correction factor. The correlation of plate and tunnel models indicated that lift losses in ground effect were essentially independent of the efflux characteristics for the engine simulators
Operational performance of the photovoltaic-powered grain mill and water pump at Tangaye, Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta)
A photovoltaic (PV) system powering a grain mill and water pump was installed in the remote African village of Tangaye, Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta) under the sponsorship of the U.S. Agency for International Development (AID) and by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Lewis Research Center (LeRC) in early 1979. The presence reports covers the second two years of operation from April 1981 through June 1983. During this time, the grain mill and water pump were operational 96 and 88 percent of the time respectively, and the PV system generated sufficient electricity to enable the grinding of about 111 metric tons of finely ground flow and the pumping of over 5000 cm sq of water from the 10 m deep well. The report includes a description of the current configuration of the system, a review of system performance, a discussion of the socioeconomic impact of the system on the villagers and a summary of results and conclusions covering the entire four-year period
Impurity crystal in a Bose-Einstein condensate
We investigate the behavior of impurity fields immersed in a larger
condensate field in 1, 2, and 3 dimensions. We discuss the localization of a
single impurity field within a condensate and note the effects of surface
energy. We derive the functional form of the attractive interaction between two
impurities due to mediation from the condensate. Generalizing the analysis to
impurity fields, we show that within various parameter regimes a crystal of
impurity fields can form spontaneously in the condensate. Finally, the system
of condensate and crystallized impurity structure is shown to have nonclassical
rotational inertia, which is characteristic of superfluidity, i.e. the system
can be seen to exhibit supersolid behavior.Comment: 5 pages, 3 color figures; Accepted to Phys. Rev. Let
High surface area, emulsion-templated carbon foams by activation of polyHIPEs derived from Pickering emulsions.
Carbon foams displaying hierarchical porosity and excellent surface areas of >1400 m2/g can be produced by the activation of macroporous poly(divinylbenzene). Poly(divinylbenzene) was synthesized from the polymerization of the continuous, but minority, phase of a simple high internal phase Pickering emulsion. By the addition of KOH, chemical activation of the materials is induced during carbonization, producing Pickering-emulsion templated carbon foams, or carboHIPEs, with tailorable macropore diameters and surface areas almost triple that of those previously reported. The retention of the customizable, macroporous open-cell structure of the poly(divinylbenzene) precursor and the production of a large degree of microporosity during activation leads to tailorable carboHIPEs with excellent surface areas
Characterisation of friction and lubrication regimes in premium tubular connections
A friction test rig has been developed to carry out repeated sliding friction tests for premium tubular connections. The test rig enables accurate measurement of friction in various contact regimes which are relevant to the threaded connections between tubular components. Higher load tests can simulate the contact in metal-to-metal seals under very high contact pressures by using perpendicular pin-on-pin tests. The contact in the thread loading flank under intermediate pressures can be simulated by using larger radius coupon-on-coupon tests. The measured coefficient of friction is well correlated with a lubrication parameter combining lubricant film thickness and initial surface roughness. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
Proper Motions of Ionized Gas at the Galactic Center: Evidence for Unbound Orbiting Gas
We present radio continuum observations of the spiral-shaped ionized feature
(Sgr A West) within the inner pc of the Galactic center at three epochs
spanning 1986 to 1995. The VLA A-configuration was used at 2cm
(resolution of 0\dasec10\dasec2). We detect proper motions of a number
of features in the Northern and Eastern Arms of Sgr A West including the
ionized gas associated with IRS 13 with V(RA)= 113 \pm 10, V(Dec)=150 \pm15
km/s, IRS 2 with V(RA)= 122 \pm 11, V(Dec)=24 \pm 34 km/s and the Norther Arm
V(RA)= 126 \pm 30, V(Dec)=--207 \pm 58 km/s. We also report the detection of
features having transverse velocities > 1000 km/s including a head-tail radio
structure, the ``Bullet'', northwest of Sgr A with V(RA)= 722
\pm 156, V(Dec)=832 \pm 203 km/s, exceeding the escape velocity at the Galactic
center.
The proper motion measurements when combined with previous H92 radio
recombination line data suggest an unambiguous direction of the flow of ionized
gas orbiting the Galactic center. The measured velocity distribution suggests
that the ionized gas in the Northern Arm is not bound to the Galactic center
assuming a 2.5 million solar mass of dark matter residing at the Galactic
center. This implies that the stellar and ionized gas systems are not
dynamically coupled, thus, supporting a picture in which the gas features in
the Northern Arm and its extensions are the result of an energetic phenomenon
that has externally driven a cloud of gas cloud into the Galactic center.Comment: 11 pages, three figures (one color) and one table. Astrophysical

The Toxoplasma gondii plastid replication and repair enzyme complex, PREX
A plastid-like organelle, the apicoplast, is essential to the majority of medically and veterinary important apicomplexan protozoa including Toxoplasma gondii and Plasmodium. The apicoplast contains multiple copies of a 35 kb genome, the replication of which is dependent upon nuclear-encoded proteins that are imported into the organelle. In P. falciparum an unusual multi-functional gene, pfprex, was previously identified and inferred to encode a protein with DNA primase, DNA helicase and DNA polymerase activities. Herein, we report the presence of a prex orthologue in T. gondii. The protein is predicted to have a bi-partite apicoplast targeting sequence similar to that demonstrated on the PfPREX polypeptide, capable of delivering marker proteins to the apicoplast. Unlike the P. falciparum gene that is devoid of introns, the T. gondii prex gene carries 19 introns, which are spliced to produce a contiguous mRNA. Bacterial expression of the polymerase domain reveals the protein to be active. Consistent with the reported absence of a plastid in Cryptosporidium species, in silico analysis of their genomes failed to demonstrate an orthologue of prex. These studies indicate that prex is conserved across the plastid-bearing apicomplexans and may play an important role in the replication of the plastid genome
