    ASASSN-18aan revisited

    The light curve of the cataclismic variable ASASSN-18aan is studied using recent observations of the MC589 Observatory, giving an orbital Period and Epoch fully consistent with the data obtained after the discovery flare in 2018. Archival data from ASASSN, ZTF and Gaia were used to check if its flares have a quasi-periodic behaviour. A recurrency time scale of about 11 months is found, confirming a previous tentative result using the historic plate archive of the Asiago Observatory.     Vetigastropoda and Neritimorpha from the Lower Bajocian of Luxembourg and palaeobiogeography of Aalenian\u2013Bajocian (Middle Jurassic) gastropods of western Europe

    Vetigastropod and neritimorph species from Lower Bajocian (Middle Jurassic) sediments of south-western Luxembourg are described. Eighteen species are recognized. Two new genera \u2013 Szabotomaria gen. nov. and Fabercapulus gen. nov. \u2013 and four new species \u2013 Szabotomaria ziqquratiformis sp. nov., Colpomphalus thuyi sp. nov., Colpomphalus tigratus sp. nov. and Fabercapulus semisculptus sp. nov. \u2013 are erected. These species, together with other species recently described from the same strata, are part of a diverse assemblage consisting of 32 species belonging to 14 genera in six families and five superfamilies, representing the richest vetigastropod-neritimorph fauna currently known from Bajocian and sub-coeval deposits of western Europe. An analysis of the palaeoecological and palaeobiogeographical relationships of this fauna and those from other areas of the western European shelf was performed using cluster analysis and by comparison of the respective taxonomic structures. The former detected a major cluster composed of two distinct branches: the faunas of the northern Paris-Wessex Basin, including Luxembourg, and those of the southern Germany basin. These faunas have similar taxonomic structures and occur mainly in facies represented by condensed iron ooid-rich marls and limestones deposited in lower offshore to upper offshore-shoreface settings. The close relationship between the Luxembourg and other faunas of the Paris-Wessex Basin reflects free faunal exchange and facies similarities. Slight differences in the sedimentary context could explain the separation of the southern German from the Anglo-Paris branch, whereas similarities between Swabian and Franconian faunas most probably reflect the geographical continuity of these areas. The Early Bajocian fauna of the East Midlands Shelf comes from sediments deposited in a shallow-water, oolitic barrier complex and is different from other western European faunas in both species composition and taxonomic structure

This can be useful when study new drugs to avoid the cross-reaction with the exogenous cytokines

    Moddicom: a Complete and Easily Accessible Library for Prognostic Evaluations Relying on Image Features

    Decision Support Systems (DSSs) are increasingly exploited in the area of prognostic evaluations. For predicting the effect of therapies on patients, the trend is now to use image features, i.e. information that can be automatically computed by considering images resulting by analysis. The DSSs application as predictive tools is particularly suitable for cancer treatment, given the peculiarities of the disease –which is highly localised and lead to significant social costs– and the large number of images that are available for each patient. At the state of the art, there exists tools that allow to handle image features for prognostic evaluations, but they are not designed for medical experts. They require either a strong engineering or computer science background since they do not integrate all the required functions, such as image retrieval and storage. In this paper we fill this gap by proposing Moddicom, a user-friendly complete library specifically designed to be exploited by physicians. A preliminary experimental analysis, performed by a medical expert that used the tool, demonstrates the efficiency and the effectiveness of Moddicom

    Backscattering UWB/UHF hybrid solutions for multi-reader multi-tag passive RFID systems

    Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology is foreseen as a promising solution to overcome the limits of ultra-high frequency (UHF) techniques toward the development of green radio frequency identification (RFID) systems with low energy consumption and localization capabilities. While UWB techniques have been already employed for active tags, passive tags solutions are more appealing also due to their lower cost. With the fundamental requirement of maintaining backward compatibility in the RFID domain, we propose a hybrid UWB/UHF architecture to improve passive tag identification both in single-reader and multi-reader scenarios. We then develop two hybrid algorithms: the first one exploits the UWB signal to improve ISO/IEC 18000-6C UHF standard, while the other one exploits UWB to enhance a compressive sensing (CS) technique for tag identification in the multi-reader, multi-tag scenario. Both solutions are able to improve success rate and reading speed in the tag identification process and reduce the energy consumption. The multi-reader version of the proposed approaches is based on a cooperative scheme in order to manage reader-tag collisions and reader-reader collisions besides the typical tag-tag collisions. Furthermore, timing synchronization non-idealities are analyzed for the proposed solutions and simulation results reveal the effectiveness of the developed schemes
