    Measurement of CP observables in B± → D(⁎)K± and B± → D(⁎)π± decays

    Measurements of CP observables in B ± →D (⁎) K ± and B ± →D (⁎) π ± decays are presented, where D (⁎) indicates a neutral D or D ⁎ meson that is an admixture of D (⁎)0 and DÂŻ (⁎)0 states. Decays of the D ⁎ meson to the Dπ 0 and DÎł final states are partially reconstructed without inclusion of the neutral pion or photon, resulting in distinctive shapes in the B candidate invariant mass distribution. Decays of the D meson are fully reconstructed in the K ± π ∓ , K + K − and π + π − final states. The analysis uses a sample of charged B mesons produced in pp collisions collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0, 1.0 and 2.0 fb −1 taken at centre-of-mass energies of s=7, 8 and 13 TeV, respectively. The study of B ± →D ⁎ K ± and B ± →D ⁎ π ± decays using a partial reconstruction method is the first of its kind, while the measurement of B ± →DK ± and B ± →Dπ ± decays is an update of previous LHCb measurements.     First observation of forward Z→bbˉZ \rightarrow b \bar{b} production in pppp collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV

    The decay Z→bb¯ is reconstructed in pp collision data, corresponding to 2 fb −1 of integrated luminosity, collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of s=8 TeV. The product of the Z production cross-section and the Z→bb¯ branching fraction is measured for candidates in the fiducial region defined by two particle-level b -quark jets with pseudorapidities in the range 2.220 GeV and dijet invariant mass in the range 4520GeVanddijetinvariantmassintherange GeV and dijet invariant mass in the range 45 < m_{jj} < 165GeV.Fromasignalyieldof GeV. From a signal yield of 5462 \pm 763 Z \rightarrow b \bar{b}events,wheretheuncertaintyisstatistical,aproductioncross−sectiontimesbranchingfractionof events, where the uncertainty is statistical, a production cross-section times branching fraction of 332 \pm 46 \pm 59pbisobtained,wherethefirstuncertaintyisstatisticalandthesecondsystematic.Themeasuredsignificanceofthesignalyieldis6.0standarddeviations.Thismeasurementrepresentsthefirstobservationofthe pb is obtained, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The measured significance of the signal yield is 6.0 standard deviations. This measurement represents the first observation of the Z \rightarrow b \bar{b}productionintheforwardregionof production in the forward region of pp$ collisions

    A measurement of the CPCP asymmetry difference in Λc+→pK−K+\varLambda_{c}^{+} \to pK^{-}K^{+} and pπ−π+p\pi^{-}\pi^{+} decays

    International audienceThe difference between the CP asymmetries in the decays Λc+_{c}^{+}  → pK−^{−}K+^{+} and Λc+_{c}^{+}  → pπ−^{−}π+^{+} is presented. Proton-proton collision data taken at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV collected by the LHCb detector in 2011 and 2012 are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{−1}. The Λc+_{c}^{+} candidates are reconstructed as part of the Λb0_{b}^{0}  → Λc+_{c}^{+} Ό−^{−}X decay chain. In order to maximize the cancellation of production and detection asymmetries in the difference, the final-state kinematic distributions of the two samples are aligned by applying phase-space-dependent weights to the Λc+_{c}^{+}  → pπ−^{−}π+^{+} sample. This alters the definition of the integrated CP asymmetry to ACPwgt_{CP}^{wgt} (pπ−^{−}π+^{+}). Both samples are corrected for reconstruction and selection efficiencies across the five-dimensional Λc+_{c}^{+} decay phase space. The difference in CP asymmetries is found to b

    The effect of handedness in tactile speech perception

M.This study examined differential performance of normally hearing subjects using a tactile device on the dominant versus non-dominant hand. The study evaluated whether tactual sensitivity for non-speech stimuli was greater for the dominant hand as compared with the non-dominant hand, and secondly, whether there was an advantage for speech presented tactually to the dominant hand, resulting from a preferential pathway to the language processing area in the left cerebral hemisphere. Evaluations of threshold pulse width, dynamic ranges, paired electrode identification, and a closed-set tactual pattern discrimination test battery showed no difference in tactual sensitivity measures between the two hands. Speech perception was assessed with closed sets of vowels and consonants and with open-set Harvey Gardner (HG) words and Arthur Boothroyd (AB) words. Group mean scores were higher in each of the tactually aided conditions as compared with the unaided conditions for speech tests, with the exception of AB words in the tactile plus lip-reading plus audition/lip-reading plus audition condition on the right hand. Overall mean scores on the closed-set vowel test and on open-set HG and AB words were significantly higher for the tactually aided condition as compared with the unaided condition. Comparison of performance between the dominant and non-dominant hand showed a significant advantage for the dominant hand on the closed-set vowel test only. No significant differences between hands in either tactually aided or unaided conditions were evident for any of the other speech perception tests. Factors influencing this result could have been variations in degree of difficulty of the tests, the amount of training subjects received, or the training strategy employed. Although an advantage to presenting speech through the dominant hand may exist, it is unlikely to be great enough to outweigh possible restrictions on everyday use

    Factors in the development of a training program for use with tactile devices

This version is reproduced with permission of Lippincott Wilkins & Williams.A review of the literature suggests that, in order to maximize the benefits available through a tactile device, it must be accompanied by an effective and adaptive training program. There are a number of factors to consider in the design of such a training program, including the type of tasks and response formats to include, the amount of training, subject motivation and device use, the characteristics of the potential user population, the specific device to be used and the type of information it provides, and the evaluation procedures to be followed. The type and saliency of the information provided by a particular tactile device are highlighted as the most important yet neglected consideration in designing a training program. The training program used with the University of Melbourne’s multiple-channel electrotactile device is presented to show how these important factors may be addressed, to indicate the flexibility required in a training program, and to provide a general framework on which researchers may base the development of programs for other tactile devices

    Speech perception benefits for children using the 22-channel Melbourne/cochlear hearing prosthesis [Abstract]

This version is reproduced with permission from Australian Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.In 1985; the first child was implanted with the Cochlear 22-channel cochlear prosthesis at the University of Melbourne Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital Cochlear Implant Clinic. There are now 42 children who have received the device in Melbourne. Analysis of patient details for these children show a very heterogeneous group, with a wide range in age, hearing thresholds, duration of deafness and aetiology. The major aetiologies found were either a congenital profound deafness.; or a hearing loss due to meningitis. In all but 3 cases, the children are using 15 or more electrodes in the array. Speech perception benefits have been analyzed according to a six-level hierarchical classification scheme. All of-the children achieved a minimum benefit of discrimination of suprasegmental information (Category 2), and 59% of the children achieved open-set understanding of unfamiliar speech material without the aid of lip-reading (Categories 5 & 6). Detailed analysis suggests that the majority of children achieving open-set speech perception benefits had more than one year of experience with their implant. and less than seven years of profound deafness prior to implantation
