    With so many advantages, it seems logical that librarians would be eager to switch from purchasing books in print to embrace the electronic format. However the transition to e-books in academic libraries has not been a smooth or quick one and the reasons are myriad and complicated. Aware that this is still a time of transition and that there are many issues surrounding the e-book, the editors set out to present the state of e-books in academic libraries today. They invited knowledgeable publishers and librarians to write about the current challenges, successes, and trends. In addition, there is a section that analyzes new data about user interaction with e-books and an essay written by a teaching faculty member who uses and encourages her student to use e-book

    Ab initio many-body calculations of nucleon scattering on 4He, 7Li, 7Be, 12C and 16O

    We combine a recently developed ab initio many-body approach capable of describing simultaneously both bound and scattering states, the ab initio NCSM/RGM, with an importance truncation scheme for the cluster eigenstate basis and demostrate its applicability to nuclei with mass numbers as high as 17. Using soft similarity renormalization group evolved chiral nucleon-nucleon interactions, we first calculate nucleon-4He phase shifts, cross sections and analyzing power. Next, we investigate nucleon scattering on 7Li, 7Be, 12C and 16O in coupled-channel NCSM/RGM calculations that include low-lying excited states of these nuclei. We check the convergence of phase shifts with the basis size and study A=8, 13, and 17 bound and unbound states. Our calculations predict low-lying resonances in 8Li and 8B that have not been experimentally clearly identified yet. We are able to reproduce reasonably well the structure of the A=13 low lying states. However, we find that A=17 states cannot be described without an improved treatment of 16O one-particle-one-hole excitations and alpha clustering.Comment: 18 pages, 20 figure

    Accuracy Assessment of Recreational and Mapping Grade GPS Receivers

    Since its development in the early 1970s, Global Positioning System (GPS) technology has become more accessible and affordable for consumers. GPS applications have become ubiquitous in society. With the increased use of GPS, the question of accuracy is of concern. This study assessed the accuracy of four Garmin recreational GPS receivers, eTrex® , eTrex Legend® , eTrex Vista® , GPSMAP® 76CS, and three Trimble® mapping GPS receivers JunoTM , GeoExplorer3TM and GeoXHTM. Thirty-three ground control points (GCPs) were established in three different landscapes using survey grade GPS (Trimble’s 4700) that were corrected using National Geodetic Survey’s Online Positioning User Service (OPUS). Eleven GCPs were established in a forest landscape, eleven near buildings to simulate an urban landscape, and eleven with a clear unobstructed sky. The GPS receivers were tested with the Wide Angle Augmentation System (WAAS) on and off. In addition, results from averaging 30 GPS positions were evaluated. This study showed the GeoXH was the most accurate receiver and that the accuracy of the recreational (Garmin) receivers was from 2.52 to 18.42 meters depending on the landscape.     Should I Stay or Should I Go? The Emergence of Partitioned Land Use Among Human Foragers

    Taking inspiration from the archaeology of the Texas Coastal Plain (TCP), we develop an ecological theory of population distribution among mobile hunter-gatherers. This theory proposes that, due to the heterogeneity of resources in space and time, foragers create networks of habitats that they access through residential cycling and shared knowledge. The degree of cycling that individuals exhibit in creating networks of habitats, encoded through social relationships, depends on the relative scarcity of resources and fluctuations in those resources. Using a dynamic model of hunter-gatherer population distribution, we illustrate that increases in population density, coupled with shocks to a biophysical or social system, creates a selective environment that favors habitat partitioning and investments in social mechanisms that control the residential cycling of foragers on a landscape. Our work adds a layer of realism to Ideal Distribution Models by adding a time allocation decision process in a variable environment and illustrates a general variance reduction, safe-operating space tradeoff among mobile human foragers that drives social change
