Addressing the Principles for School Mathematics: A Case Study of Elementary Teachers Pedagogy and Practices in an Urban High-Poverty School
The extent to which four novice teachers assigned to an urban high-poverty school implemented the Principles of School Mathematics during their mathematics instruction program was investigated using a case study design. The research team conducted 36 unannounced observations of the participating teachers and utilized a developed assessment to guide their observations. Results indicated that only one teacher was judged proficient for all the principles. The remaining three teachers fell short in the implementation and direction of the principles. Investigating Estimation: Influences of Time and Confidence of Urban Middle School Students
This study sought to determine the estimation processes used by 10 urban middle school students for solving computational estimation problems, and if there was a difference in the estimation processes utilized for straight computation and application problems. An adapted model of the Accessing Computational Estimation Test (ACE) was used to determine the estimation strategies employed by the subjects within timed and un-timed settings. Qualitative methods were used to analyze the data. The timed ACE tests were administered using an interview format and included computation and application problems. The findings indicated that there were no differences in estimation processes for straight computation and application problems; however, students performed better on timed tests for application problems
Addressing Urban High-Poverty School Teacher Attrition by Addressing Urban High Poverty School Teacher Retention: Why Effective Teachers Perservere
Recruiting and retaining quality teachers specific for high-poverty schools in urban areas is a national concern, especially in light of the No Child Left Behind federal legislation. The educational realities, detrimental effects of poverty, and human despair that often depress low-income communities can prove to be quite overpowering for many teachers new to the profession and significantly contribute to high levels of teacher absenteeism, attrition rates, and teacher shortages. Examining this issue through a new lens, that being through the eyes of effective urban high-poverty school educators, has the potential to spark spirited conversations and debates among policy makers and educators alike so that significant polices and efforts can be developed and implemented. Therefore, the intent of this study was to develop a profile of high-quality educators who remain in urban high-poverty schools within a large metropolitan school district, and identify the indicators that influence them to remain. The results indicated that teachers who are African American, older, and more experienced define the profile of teachers most likely to remain beyond the first three years in this demanding setting. Additionally, these teachers reported that they remain because they believe they are well suited for teaching in high-poverty schools. Unless more attention is given to teacher retention, and why some educators are successful and persevere in even the most hard-to-staff schools, teacher attrition will continue to be a national concern

Isbourne Catchment Project: Scoping Study (Final Report), Report to Isbourne Catchment Partnership & Environment Agency.
The School of Natural and Social Sciences (SNSS) and the Countryside and Communities Research Institute (CCRI) at the University of Gloucestershire were commissioned by the Environment Agency (EA) and the Isbourne Catchment Group (ICG) to undertake a Scoping Study of the River Isbourne to assess the feasibility and potential benefits of applying natural flood management (NFM) techniques across the Isbourne catchment. Other options had been considered in an analysis of the catchment in 2010 (Haycock 2010) and some minor changes have been made. However, most significant engineering options have been ruled out and not considered to be cost effective whilst soft engineering options such as land use change and natural flood management were recommended for further investigation. This report describes the catchment characteristics, outlines potential NFM methods before specifying which would be appropriate for the Isbourne catchment and making recommendations for future work
1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic studies of the ferriheme resonances of three low-spin complexes of wild-type nitrophorin 2 and nitrophorin 2(V24E) as a function of pH
The ferriheme resonances of the low-spin (SĀ =Ā 1/2) complexes of wild-type (wt) nitrophorin 2 (NP2) and its heme pocket mutant NP2(V24E) with imidazole (ImH), histamine (Hm), and cyanide (CNā) as the sixth ligand have been investigated by NMR spectroscopy as a function of pH (4.0ā7.5). For the three wt NP2 complexes, the ratio of the two possible heme orientational isomers, A and B, remains almost unchanged (ratio of A:B approximately 1:6 to 1:5) over this wide pH range. However, strong chemical exchange cross peaks appear in the nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy/exchange spectroscopy (NOESY/EXSY) spectra for the heme methyl resonances at low pH (pH* 4.0ā5.5), which indicate chemical exchange between two species. We have shown these to be two different exogenous ImH or Hm orientations that are denoted B and Bā², with the ImH plane nearly parallel and perpendicular to the ImH plane of the protein-provided His57, respectively. The wt NP2āCN complex also shows EXSY cross peaks due to chemical exchange, which is shown to be a result of interchange between two ruffling distortions of the heme. The same ruffling distortion interchange is also responsible for the ImH and Hm chemical exchange. For the three NP2(V24E) ligand complexes, no EXSY cross peaks are observed, but the A:B ratios change dramatically with pH. The fact that heme favors the A orientation highly for NP2(V24E) at low pH as compared with wt NP2 is believed to be due to the steric effect of the V24E mutation. The existence of the Bā² species at lower pH for wt NP2 complexes and the increase in A heme orientation at lower pH for NP2(V24E) are believed to be a result of a change in structure near Glu53 when it is protonated at low pH. 1H{13C} heteronuclear multiple quantum coherence (HMQC) spectra are very helpful for the assignment of heme and nearby protein side chain resonances
Signed zeros of Gaussian vector fields-density, correlation functions and curvature
We calculate correlation functions of the (signed) density of zeros of
Gaussian distributed vector fields. We are able to express correlation
functions of arbitrary order through the curvature tensor of a certain abstract
Riemann-Cartan or Riemannian manifold. As an application, we discuss one- and
two-point functions. The zeros of a two-dimensional Gaussian vector field model
the distribution of topological defects in the high-temperature phase of
two-dimensional systems with orientational degrees of freedom, such as

The distribution of extremal points of Gaussian scalar fields
We consider the signed density of the extremal points of (two-dimensional)
scalar fields with a Gaussian distribution. We assign a positive unit charge to
the maxima and minima of the function and a negative one to its saddles. At
first, we compute the average density for a field in half-space with Dirichlet
boundary conditions. Then we calculate the charge-charge correlation function
(without boundary). We apply the general results to random waves and random
surfaces. Furthermore, we find a generating functional for the two-point
function. Its Legendre transform is the integral over the scalar curvature of a
