    Voluntary binocular gaze-shifts in the plane of regard: Dynamics of version and vergence

    We studied the dynamics of voluntary, horizontal, binocular gaze-shifts between pairs of continuously visible, real three-dimensional targets. Subjects were stabilized on a biteboard to allow full control of target angles, which were made to differ only in distance (pure vergence), only in direction (pure version; conjugate saccades) or in both distance and direction (disjunctive saccades). A wide range of changes in vergence (0-25 deg) and version (0-65 deg) was recorded to study the dynamics of disjunctive saccades, described until now for limited ranges, throughout the horizontal oculomotor range within manual working space, and to study the velocity-duration-amplitude relations ("main sequence") of disjunctive vs conjugate saccades. Pure vergence was almost never observed; divergence, especially, was always associated with saccades. Likewise, horizontal saccades were never strictly conjugate, they always contained a transient divergence-convergence sequence. The amplitude and velocity of these transient components varied systematically with saccadic size. In combined version-vergence movements, vergence was, in general, accelerated and shortened as a function of increasing version. This effect was fairly uniform for divergence, which appeared to increase in velocity by about as much as the transient peak divergent velocity of the version saccade. The intrasaccadic fraction of divergence increased from about 50% to close to 100% as a function of increasing version. For convergence, saccades up to about 20 deg were also accelerating; in this case it appeared as if the transient peak convergent velocity of the version saccade was added to the basic convergence velocity. For larger saccades this effect was partly counteracted by the penetration of an initial divergence associated with the saccade. This initial divergence delayed and slowed down convergence. The intrasaccadic fraction of convergence varied between about 40% and 70%. In disjunctive saccades the individual eyes did not follow the main-sequence parameters of conjugate saccades of comparable sizes, except for the eye that moved with the combination "abduction and divergence". For all other combinations of vergence and version, disjunctive saccades had lower peak velocities and longer durations than conjugate saccades. As a consequence, disjunctive version was also slower than conjugate version. Thus, while version accelerates vergence, vergence slows down version: in the generalized case of three-dimensional gaze-shifts, peak velocities and durations are in between those of the limiting cases of pure version and pure vergence. We conclude that, within manual working space, binocular gaze-shifts are effected by the highly integrated action of conjugate and disjunctive mechanisms, both of which are expressed preferentially in fast, saccadic movements

    Free Energy of a Dilute Bose Gas: Lower Bound

    A lower bound is derived on the free energy (per unit volume) of a homogeneous Bose gas at density ρ\rho and temperature TT. In the dilute regime, i.e., when a3ρâ‰Ș1a^3\rho \ll 1, where aa denotes the scattering length of the pair-interaction potential, our bound differs to leading order from the expression for non-interacting particles by the term 4πa(2ρ2−[ρ−ρc]+2)4\pi a (2\rho^2 - [\rho-\rho_c]_+^2). Here, ρc(T)\rho_c(T) denotes the critical density for Bose-Einstein condensation (for the non-interacting gas), and []+[ ]_+ denotes the positive part. Our bound is uniform in the temperature up to temperatures of the order of the critical temperature, i.e., T∌ρ2/3T \sim \rho^{2/3} or smaller.     Aerial Survey Estimates of Abundance of the Eastern Chukchi Sea Stock of Beluga Whales (Delphinapterus leucas) in 2012

    The eastern Chukchi Sea (ECS) stock of beluga whales is one of three stocks in western Alaska that are co-managed by the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Alaska Beluga Whale Committee. Abundance of this stock was estimated as 3710 in 1991 from incomplete data. Analysis of data from satellite-linked time-depth recorders (SDRs) attached to belugas in summer concentration areas of the ECS and Beaufort Sea (BS) stocks provided an overview of beluga distribution and movements and allowed the identification of an area (140˚ W to 157˚ W in the BS) and a time period (19 July – 20 August) in which the distributions of the two stocks do not overlap. Aerial survey data were collected by the Aerial Surveys of Arctic Marine Mammals (ASAMM) project in that region and time period in 2012. We used those data in a line transect analysis that estimated there were 5547 (CV = 0.22) surface-visible belugas in the study area. Data from SDRs were used to develop correction factors to account for animals that were missed because they were either outside of the study area or diving too deep to be seen, resulting in a total abundance estimate of 20 752 (CV = 0.70). The average annual Alaska Native subsistence harvest from the ECS stock (57) is about 0.3% of the population estimate. Without data collected by the ASAMM project and from satellite-linked tags, this analysis would not have been possible. Additional surveys and tagging of ECS belugas are warranted.Le stock de bĂ©lugas de l’est de la mer des Tchouktches (EMT) figure parmi les trois stocks de l’ouest de l’Alaska Ă  ĂȘtre gĂ©rĂ©s conjointement par le National Marine Fisheries Service et l’Alaska Beluga Whale Committee.     Universal quantum computation and simulation using any entangling Hamiltonian and local unitaries

We provide an efficient algorithm to simulate any desired two-body Hamiltonian evolution using any fixed two-body entangling n-qubit Hamiltonian and local unitaries.     Glacier change along West Antarctica’s Marie Byrd Land Sector and links to inter-decadal atmosphere-ocean variability

    Over the past 20 years satellite remote sensing has captured significant downwasting of glaciers that drain the West Antarctic Ice Sheet into the ocean, particularly across the Amundsen Sea Sector. Along the neighbouring Marie Byrd Land Sector, situated west of Thwaites Glacier to Ross Ice Shelf, glaciological change has been only sparsely monitored. Here, we use optical satellite imagery to track grounding-line migration along the Marie Byrd Land Sector between 2003 and 2015, and compare observed changes with ICESat and CryoSat-2-derived surface elevation and thickness change records. During the observational period, 33% of the grounding line underwent retreat, with no significant advance recorded over the remainder of the  ∌ 2200km long coastline. The greatest retreat rates were observed along the 650km-long Getz Ice Shelf, further west of which only minor retreat occurred. The relative glaciological stability west of Getz Ice Shelf can be attributed to a divergence of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current from the continental-shelf break at 135°W, coincident with a transition in the morphology of the continental shelf. Along Getz Ice Shelf, grounding-line retreat reduced by 68% during the CryoSat-2 era relative to earlier observations. Climate reanalysis data imply that wind-driven upwelling of Circumpolar Deep Water would have been reduced during this later period, suggesting that the observed slowdown was a response to reduced oceanic forcing. However, lack of comprehensive oceanographic and bathymetric information proximal to Getz Ice Shelf's grounding zone make it difficult to assess the role of intrinsic glacier dynamics, or more complex ice-sheet–ocean interactions, in moderating this slowdown. Collectively, our findings underscore the importance of spatial and inter-decadal variability in atmosphere and ocean interactions in moderating glaciological change around Antarctica

    The function of visual search and memory in sequential looking tasks

    Eye and head movements were recorded as unrestrained subjects tapped or only looked at nearby targets. Scanning patterns were the same in both tasks: subjects looked at each target before tapping it; visual search had similar speeds and gaze-shift accuracies. Looking however, took longer and, unlike tapping, benefitted little from practice. Looking speeded up more than tapping when memory load was reduced: memory was more efficient during tapping. Conclusion: eye movements made when only looking are different from those made when tapping. Visual search functions as a separate process, incorporated into both tasks: it can be used to improve performance when memory load is heavy

    Kinks in the Presence of Rapidly Varying Perturbations

    Dynamics of sine-Gordon kinks in the presence of rapidly varying periodic perturbations of different physical origins is described analytically and numerically. The analytical approach is based on asymptotic expansions, and it allows to derive, in a rigorous way, an effective nonlinear equation for the slowly varying field component in any order of the asymptotic procedure as expansions in the small parameter ω−1\omega^{-1}, ω\omega being the frequency of the rapidly varying ac driving force. Three physically important examples of such a dynamics, {\em i.e.}, kinks driven by a direct or parametric ac force, and kinks on rotating and oscillating background, are analysed in detail. It is shown that in the main order of the asymptotic procedure the effective equation for the slowly varying field component is {\em a renormalized sine-Gordon equation} in the case of the direct driving force or rotating (but phase-locked to an external ac force) background, and it is {\em the double sine-Gordon equation} for the parametric driving force. The properties of the kinks described by the renormalized nonlinear equations are analysed, and it is demonstrated analytically and numerically which kinds of physical phenomena may be expected in dealing with the renormalized, rather than the unrenormalized, nonlinear dynamics. In particular, we predict several qualitatively new effects which include, {\em e.g.}, the perturbation-inducedComment: New copy of the paper of the above title to replace the previous one, lost in the midst of the bulletin board.     Quantification of the Retention and Disassembly of Virus Particles by a PEI-Functionalized Microfiltration Membrane

    [Image: see text] Monitoring the performance of polymer-functionalized surfaces that aim at removing and inactivating viruses is typically labor-intensive and time-consuming. This hampers the development and optimization of such surfaces. Here we present experiments of low complexity that can be used to characterize and quantify the antiviral properties of polymer-functionalized surfaces. We showcase our approach on polyethylenimine (PEI)-coated poly(ether sulfone) (PES) microfiltration membranes. We use a fluorescently labeled model virus to quantify both virus removal and inactivation. We directly quantify the log removal of intact viruses by this membrane using single particle counting. Additionally, we exploit the change in photophysical properties upon disassembly of the virus to show that viruses are inactivated by the PEI coating. Although only a small fraction of intact viruses can pass the membrane, a considerable fraction of inactivated, disassembled viruses are found in the filtrate. Fluorescence microscopy experiments show that most of the viruses left behind on the microfiltration membrane are in the inactivated, disassembled state. Combined, our fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy experiments show that not only does the model virus adsorb to the PEI coating on the membrane but also the interaction with PEI results in the disassembly of the virus capsid

    Mechanistic investigation of Rh(i)-catalysed asymmetric Suzuki–Miyaura coupling with racemic allyl halides

    Understanding how catalytic asymmetric reactions with racemic starting materials can operate would enable new enantioselective cross-coupling reactions that give chiral products. Here we propose a catalytic cycle for the highly enantioselective Rh(I)-catalysed Suzuki–Miyaura coupling of boronic acids and racemic allyl halides. Natural abundance 13C kinetic isotope effects provide quantitative information about the transition-state structures of two key elementary steps in the catalytic cycle, transmetallation and oxidative addition. Experiments with configurationally stable, deuterium-labelled substrates revealed that oxidative addition can happen via syn- or anti-pathways, which control diastereoselectivity. Density functional theory calculations attribute the extremely high enantioselectivity to reductive elimination from a common Rh complex formed from both allyl halide enantiomers. Our conclusions are supported by analysis of the reaction kinetics. These insights into the sequence of bond-forming steps and their transition-state structures will contribute to our understanding of asymmetric Rh–allyl chemistry and enable the discovery and application of asymmetric reactions with racemic substrates
