    FTC vs. Toysmart

    Get PDF
Last summer, Toysmart agreed to a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission concerning use of its customer information database. Under the terms of the settlement, the defunct Internet toy retailer was permitted to sell customer information without either providing its former customers notice or giving them an opportunity to block the sale or use of their personal information. This issue ignited a privacy-rights maelstrom, but ended anti-climatically for Toysmart; in January, Buena Vista Internet Group, a Disney subsidiary and 60% majority shareholder of Toysmart, agreed to compensate the company\u27s creditors $50,000 for the privilege of destroying the database. U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Carol Kenner approved this plan, subject to the limitation that Toysmart attorneys must retain the list and destroy it (rather than physically transfer it to Buena Vista) when all creditor claims are satisfied

Performance of LIPS III Attitude Control System

    Get PDF
The LIPS III satellite is a spin stabilized sun tracking space platform who\u27s primary mission is to test new space power sources. The attitude control system has two modes of operation, hydrazine gas jet for large attitude errors and an electromagnetic torque rod for nominal operations. The control law will be discussed and examples of inflight data will be given

Does Religious Belief Affect Attitudes Towards Mental Illness?

    Get PDF
There has been an increase in recent years in the effort to raise awareness of mental health issues, particularly suicide. However, awareness does not equate to understanding and there has been little in the way of public education. One of the biggest obstacles faced by those suffering from a mental illness is the public stigma associated with it. Given the high percentage of the population in the South who identify as being religious, this study looked at the relationship between religiosity and public stigma towards mental illness. Two hundred forty-two university students drawn from undergraduate biology and nursing classes completed a questionnaire which comprised two established surveys on religiosity and attitudes towards mental illness respectively. The intention was to follow the survey with educational presentations to audiences who identified as very religious to measure whether increased understanding resulted in a decrease in negative attitudes. Of the 31 places of worship approached – in writing, by telephone, by referral and in person – none agreed to participate. A subsequent educational intervention with a group of university students revealed an unexpected confound in that the evaluation questionnaire was found to be ambiguous

Nonclassical rotational inertia for a supersolid under rotation

As proposed by Leggett [4], the supersolidity of a crystal is characterized by the Non Classical Rotational Inertia (NCRI) property. Using a model of quantum crystal introduced by Josserand, Pomeau and Rica [5], we prove that NCRI occurs. This is done by analyzing the ground state of the aforementioned model, which is related to a sphere packing problem, and then deriving a theoretical formula for the inertia momentum. We infer a lower estimate for the NCRI fraction, which is a landmark of supersolidity

Categorification of a frieze pattern determinant

    Get PDF
Broline, Crowe and Isaacs have computed the determinant of a matrix associated to a Conway-Coxeter frieze pattern. We generalise their result to the corresponding frieze pattern of cluster variables arising from the Fomin-Zelevinsky cluster algebra of type A. We give a representation-theoretic interpretation of this result in terms of certain configurations of indecomposable objects in the root category of type A.Comment: 14 pages; 8 figures. Sections 1-3 rewritten, postponing the cluster interpretation until Section 3. Minor correction

MECA Symposium on Mars: Evolution of its Climate and Atmosphere

    Get PDF
The geological, atmospheric, and climatic history of Mars is explored in reviews and reports of recent observational and interpretive investigations. Topics addressed include evidence for a warm wet climate on early Mars, volatiles on Earth and on Mars, CO2 adsorption on palagonite and its implications for Martian regolith partitioning, and the effect of spatial resolution on interpretations of Martian subsurface volatiles. Consideration is given to high resolution observations of rampart craters, ring furrows in highland terrains, the interannual variability of the south polar cap, telescopic observations of the north polar cap and circumpolar clouds, and dynamical modeling of a planetary wave polar warming mechanism

The Selection of Propellers for High Thrust at Low Airspeed

    Get PDF
Problem of improving thrust at low speeds is primarily one of reducing angle of attack of operation of sections to improve L/D or reducing blade helix angle. An analysis, based on recent propeller data, is presented for determining improvements in thrust or efficiency which could be obtained by increased number of blades, increased blade width, increased diameter, dual rotation, and two-speed gearing. All methods were found very effective, particularly two-speed gearing
