Topology and Bistability in liquid crystal devices
We study nematic liquid crystal configurations in a prototype bistable device
- the Post Aligned Bistable Nematic (PABN) cell. Working within the Oseen-Frank
continuum model, we describe the liquid crystal configuration by a unit-vector
field, in a model version of the PABN cell. Firstly, we identify four distinct
topologies in this geometry. We explicitly construct trial configurations with
these topologies which are used as initial conditions for a numerical solver,
based on the finite-element method. The morphologies and energetics of the
corresponding numerical solutions qualitatively agree with experimental
observations and suggest a topological mechanism for bistability in the PABN
cell geometry
Cosmologies with Null Singularities and their Gauge Theory Duals
We investigate backgrounds of Type IIB string theory with null singularities
and their duals proposed in hep-th/0602107. The dual theory is a deformed N=4
Yang-Mills theory in 3+1 dimensions with couplings dependent on a light-like
direction. We concentrate on backgrounds which become AdS_5 x S^5 at early and
late times and where the string coupling is bounded, vanishing at the
singularity. Our main conclusion is that in these cases the dual gauge theory
is nonsingular. We show this by arguing that there exists a complete set of
gauge invariant observables in the dual gauge theory whose correlation
functions are nonsingular at all times. The two-point correlator for some
operators calculated in the gauge theory does not agree with the result from
the bulk supergravity solution. However, the bulk calculation is invalid near
the singularity where corrections to the supergravity approximation become
important. We also obtain pp-waves which are suitable Penrose limits of this
general class of solutions, and construct the Matrix Membrane theory which
describes these pp-wave backgrounds.Comment: 43 pages REVTeX and AMSLaTeX. v2: references adde
Improving Predictions for Helium Emission Lines
We have combined the detailed He I recombination model of Smits with the
collisional transitions of Sawey & Berrington in order to produce new accurate
helium emissivities that include the effects of collisional excitation from
both the 2 (3)S and 2 (1) S levels. We present a grid of emissivities for a
range of temperature and densities along with analytical fits and error
estimates.
Fits accurate to within 1% are given for the emissivities of the brightest
lines over a restricted range for estimates of primordial helium abundance. We
characterize the analysis uncertainties associated with uncertainties in
temperature, density, fitting functions, and input atomic data. We estimate
that atomic data uncertainties alone may limit abundance estimates to an
accuracy of 1.5%; systematic errors may be greater than this. This analysis
uncertainty must be incorporated when attempting to make high accuracy
estimates of the helium abundance. For example, in recent determinations of the
primordial helium abundance, uncertainties in the input atomic data have been
neglected.Comment: ApJ, accepte
A Synchrotron-Based Study of the Mary Rose Iron Cannonballs
Post‐excavation iron corrosion may be accelerated by the presence of Cl^{-} , leading to conservation methods designed to remove Cl. This study exploits a unique opportunity to assess 35 years of conservation applied to cast‐iron cannon shot excavated from the Mary Rose. A combination of synchrotron X‐ray powder diffraction (SXPD), absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and fluorescence (XRF) mapping have been used to characterise the impact of conservation on the crystalline corrosion products, chlorine distribution, and speciation. The chlorinated phase akaganeite, β‐FeO(OH,Cl), was found on shot washed in corrosion inhibitor Hostacor IT with or without an additional reduction stage. No chlorinated phases were observed on the surface of shot stored in sodium sesquicarbonate (Na_{2}CO_{3}/NaHCO_{3}); however, hibbingite, β‐Fe_{2}(OH)_{3}Cl, was present in metal pores. It is proposed that surface β‐FeO(OH,Cl) formed in the early stages of active conservation owing to oxidation of β‐Fe_{2}(OH)_{3}Cl at near‐neutral pH
Maslov Indices and Monodromy
We prove that for a Hamiltonian system on a cotangent bundle that is
Liouville-integrable and has monodromy the vector of Maslov indices is an
eigenvector of the monodromy matrix with eigenvalue 1. As a corollary the
resulting restrictions on the monodromy matrix are derived.Comment: 6 page
Work-related psychological health and psychological type among lead elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches in the United Kingdom
Building on a series of recent studies concerned with assessing work-related psychological health and psychological type among various groups of church leaders, this study reports new data provided by 134 Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches in the United Kingdom who completed the Francis Psychological Type Scales (FPTS) together with the two scales of the Francis Burnout Inventory (FBI) concerned with emotional exhaustion and satisfaction in ministry. Compared with other groups of church leaders, Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches reported lower levels of emotional exhaustion and higher levels of satisfaction in ministry. Compared with other groups of church leaders, there was a higher proportion of extraverts among Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches. There was only a weak association between psychological type and burnout

Utilitarian Collective Choice and Voting
In his seminal Social Choice and Individual Values, Kenneth Arrow stated that his theory applies to voting. Many voting theorists have been convinced that, on account of Arrow’s theorem, all voting methods must be seriously flawed. Arrow’s theory is strictly ordinal, the cardinal aggregation of preferences being explicitly rejected. In this paper I point out that all voting methods are cardinal and therefore outside the reach of Arrow’s result.
Parallel to Arrow’s ordinal approach, there evolved a consistent cardinal theory of collective choice. This theory, most prominently associated with the work of Harsanyi, continued the older utilitarian tradition in a more formal style. The purpose of this paper is to show that various derivations of utilitarian SWFs can also be used to derive utilitarian voting (UV). By this I mean a voting rule that allows the voter to score each alternative in accordance with a given scale. UV-k indicates a scale with k distinct values. The general theory leaves k to be determined on pragmatic grounds. A (1,0) scale gives approval voting. I prefer the scale (1,0,-1) and refer to the resulting voting rule as evaluative voting.
A conclusion of the paper is that the defects of conventional voting methods result not from Arrow’s theorem, but rather from restrictions imposed on voters’ expression of their preferences.
The analysis is extended to strategic voting, utilizing a novel set of assumptions regarding voter behavior
Wandering of a contact line at thermal equilibrium
We reconsider the problem of the solid-liquid-vapour contact-line on a
disordered substrate, in the collective pinning regime. We go beyond scaling
arguments and perform an analytic computation, through the replica variational
method, of the fluctuations of the line. We show how gravity effects must be
included for a proper quantitative comparison with available experimental data
of the wetting of liquid helium on a caesium substrate. The theoretical result
is in good agreement with experimental findings for this case.Comment: 24 laTex pages with 5 EPS figures included. submitted to Phys. Rev
