Application of (e,2e) Spectroscopy to the Electronic Structure of Valence Electrons in Crystalline and Amorphous Solids
This review presents theoretical and experimental aspects of (e,2e) spectroscopy specific to the study of crystalline and amorphous solids. The cross section for (e,2e) scattering is proportional to the spectral momentum density of the ejected electron under certain approximations. The theoretical framework for interpreting (e,2e) measurements is summarized here and general properties of the spectral momentum density of solids are discussed. Different designs of the (e,2e) spectrometer are described and sample preparation techniques are briefly reviewed. A summary of recent (e,2e) experiments on the electronic structure of valence electrons in graphite, ion sputtered and evaporated amorphous carbon, and aluminum-aluminum oxide films is given. The review concludes with a discussion of an ideal (e,2e) spectrometer for studying bulk properties of solids
Spatial Besov Regularity for Stochastic Partial Differential Equations on Lipschitz Domains
We use the scale of Besov spaces B^\alpha_{\tau,\tau}(O), \alpha>0,
1/\tau=\alpha/d+1/p, p fixed, to study the spatial regularity of the solutions
of linear parabolic stochastic partial differential equations on bounded
Lipschitz domains O\subset R^d. The Besov smoothness determines the order of
convergence that can be achieved by nonlinear approximation schemes. The proofs
are based on a combination of weighted Sobolev estimates and characterizations
of Besov spaces by wavelet expansions.Comment: 32 pages, 3 figure
Isolated familial pheochromocytoma as a variant of von Hippel-Lindau disease.
Inherited pheochromocytomas are often part of familial syndromes, especially multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2), retinal cerebellar hemangioblastomatosis [von Hippel-Lindau (vHL) disease] or neurofibromatosis type 1. It is not clear whether isolated familial pheochromocytoma exists as a separate clinical entity. In a family with pheochromocytomas in three generations and with at least seven affected members, we investigated by clinical and genetic analyses the presence or absence of associated conditions. The clinical investigations included ophthalmological and radiological studies for von Hippel-Lindau disease (magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, computed tomography of the abdomen, and direct ophthalmoscopy after mydriasis) and annual calcitonin stimulation tests for C cell disease in five members who agreed to regular follow-up. Besides the pheochromocytomas (so far, these have been multiple in five of seven individuals) no definite second associated condition was found. Genetic analysis did not identify any MEN 2-specific RET protooncogene point mutations (which are present in 97% of MEN 2a families). However, despite the complete absence of other clinical manifestations of the vHL disease (besides pheochromocytomas), a previously undescribed germline missense mutation in the vHL tumor suppressor gene was found (C775G transversion with a predicted substitution of a leucine by a valine at codon 259 in the putative vHL protein). We conclude that in this family the sole occurrence of pheochromocytoma is a variant of vHL disease
An Spectrometer for Investigating the Spectral Momentum Density of Thin Films
An (e, 2e) spectrometer has been constructed for detecting scattered and recoiling electrons from a thin solid film. The cross section for observing the two electrons in coincidence is proportional to the spectral momentum density of the target. In this spectrometer the energy of the incident electron beam is 25 keV and the beam current is approximately 40 μA. The energy resolution (FWHM) is ≤4 eV. The momentum resolution (FWHM) can be varied from 0.2 to 1.0 Å−1. Preliminary coincidence data from an amorphous carbon film are presented
Indomethacin decreases viscosity of gallbladder bile in patients with cholesterol gallstone disease
There is experimental evidence that inhibition of cyclooxygenase with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may decrease cholesterol gall-stone formation and mitigate biliary pain in gall-stone patients. The mechanisms by which NSAIDs exert these effect are unclear. In a prospective, controlled clinical trial we examined the effects of oral indomethacin on the composition of human gall-bladder bile. The study included 28 patients with symptomatic cholesterol or mixed gallstones. Of these, 8 were treated with 3 × 25 mg indomethacin daily for 7 days prior to elective cholecystectomy while 20 received no treatment and served as controls. Bile and tissue samples from the gallbladder were obtained during cholecystectomy. Indomethacin tissue levels in the gallbladder mucosa, as assessed by HPLC, were 1.05±0.4 ng/mg wet weight, a concentration known to inhibit effectively cyclooxygenase activity. Nevertheless, no differences between the treated and untreated groups were found in the concentrations of biliary mucus glycoprotein (0.94±0.27 versus 0.93±0.32 mg/ml) or total protein (5.8±0.9 versus 6.4±1.3 mg/ml), cholesterol saturation (1.3±0.2 versus 1.5±0.2), or nucleation time (2.0±3.0 versus 1.5±2.0 days). However, biliary viscosity, measured using a low-shear rotation viscosimeter, was significantly lower in patients receiving indomethacin treatment (2.9±0.6 versus 5.6±1.2 mPa.s; P < 0.02). In conclusion, in man oral indomethacin decreases bile viscosity without alteration of bile lithogenicity or biliary mucus glycoprotein content. Since mucus glycoproteins are major determinants of bile viscosity, an alteration in mucin macromolecular composition may conceivably cause the indomethacin-induced decrease in biliary viscosity and explain the beneficial effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in gallstone disease
The Variable Stars and Blue Horizontal Branch of the Metal-Rich Globular Cluster NGC 6441
We present time-series VI photometry of the metal-rich ([Fe/H] = -0.53)
globular cluster NGC 6441. Our color-magnitude diagram shows that the extended
blue horizontal branch seen in Hubble Space Telescope data exists in the
outermost reaches of the cluster. The red clump slopes nearly parallel to the
reddening vector. A component of this slope is due to differential reddening,
but part is intrinsic. The blue horizontal branch stars are more centrally
concentrated than the red clump stars. We have discovered about 50 new variable
stars near NGC 6441, among them eight or more RR Lyrae stars which are very
probably cluster members. Comprehensive period searches over the range 0.2-1.0
days yielded unusually long periods (0.5-0.9 days) for the fundamental
pulsators compared with field RR Lyrae of the same metallicity. Three similar
long-period RR Lyrae are known in other metal-rich globulars. With over ten
examples in hand, it seems that a distinct sub-class of RR Lyrae is emerging.
The observed properties of the horizontal branch stars are in reasonable
agreement with recent models which invoke deep mixing to enhance the
atmospheric helium abundance, while they conflict with models which assume high
initial helium abundance. The light curves of the c-type RR Lyrae seem to have
unusually long rise times and sharp minima. Reproducing these light curves in
stellar pulsation models may provide another means of constraining the physical
variables responsible for the anomalous blue horizontal branch extension and
sloped red clump observed in NGC 6441.Comment: 30 pages plus 6 EPS and 6 JPEG figures; uses AAS TeX. Accepted by the

#Bieber + #Blast = #BieberBlast: Early Prediction of Popular Hashtag Compounds
Compounding of natural language units is a very common phenomena. In this
paper, we show, for the first time, that Twitter hashtags which, could be
considered as correlates of such linguistic units, undergo compounding. We
identify reasons for this compounding and propose a prediction model that can
identify with 77.07% accuracy if a pair of hashtags compounding in the near
future (i.e., 2 months after compounding) shall become popular. At longer times
T = 6, 10 months the accuracies are 77.52% and 79.13% respectively. This
technique has strong implications to trending hashtag recommendation since
newly formed hashtag compounds can be recommended early, even before the
compounding has taken place. Further, humans can predict compounds with an
overall accuracy of only 48.7% (treated as baseline). Notably, while humans can
discriminate the relatively easier cases, the automatic framework is successful
in classifying the relatively harder cases.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 9 tables, published in CSCW (Computer-Supported
