    The Development of Lesson Plans to Enable Diversity and Collaboration (II): Focusing on Ways to Elicit Unique Modes of Expression of Each Student

    In this study, the authors aimed to develop lessons in which diversity and collaboration were ensured through children's cooperative involvement in a special class for students with intellectual disabilities. To bring out unique modes of expression for each student, the authors framed two practices and analyzed, as a lesson study, children's activities and the teacher's support in an unformulated communicative learning process. The authors found three key results. First, children's expressions deepen through a combination of both imitation and exploration, and collaboration emerged through this deepening process. Second, the pursuit of a teaching practice oriented toward diversity and collaboration contributes to the growth and development of both children and teachers, through discussing the learning environment, the teacher's actions, and the processes through which children explore their expressions. Third, children's motives for expression can be encouraged through intellectual curiosity and interest in musical instruments, the creation of an atmosphere where children can feel comfortable and the creation of positive relationships and a sense of partnership among the children and teacher. Their need for competence, then, can be stimulated by activities such as imitating each other's expression

    Interaction between Leptospiral Lipopolysaccharide and Toll-like Receptor 2 in Pig Fibroblast Cell Line, and Inhibitory Effect of Antibody against Leptospiral Lipopolysaccharide on Interaction

    Leptospiral lipopolysaccharide (L-LPS) has shown potency in activating toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) in pig fibroblasts (PEFs_NCC1), and causes the expression of proinflammatory cytokines. However, the stimulation by L-LPS was weak eliciting the function of TLR2 sufficiently in pig innate immunity responses during Leptospira infection. In this study, the immune response of pig embryonic fibroblast cell line (PEFs_SV40) was investigated and was found to be the high immune response, thus TLR2 is the predominate receptor of L-LPS in pig cells. Further, we found a strategy using the antibody against L-LPS, to prevent L-LPS interaction with TLR2 in pig cells which could impact on immune activation

    A Report on Overseas Teaching Practicum by Graduate Students in Elementary/Secondary Schools in the United States (XII)

    This paper reports on the overseas teaching practicum in the U.S., which was supposed to be the 12th time this year. Eight students joined this year’s program and they prepared for the practicum in the U.S. They met regularly to discuss the lesson plans and deepen their understanding on how to create a lesson and what scaffolding steps they should prepare for conveying messages to American children who know little about Japanese culture and having different background from us. Unfortunately, just a few days before the departure, we had to give up our visit to the U.S. since there was a high chance of a hurricane hitting the area we were to visit. Though we could not make our visit in September, instead we held a forum in November and exchanged discussion on the impact of the program to the participants and the schools which accept us. The details of the lesson plans and the forum are reported in this paper

    A Report on Overseas Teaching Practicum by Graduate Students in Elementary/Secondary Schools in the United States(Ⅺ)

    This paper reports on the 11th overseas teaching practicum in the U.S. 12 students joined this year’s program and they observed and conducted lessons in English in three local public schools in North Carolina after careful and repeated preparation sessions in Japan. Many of them did lessons on crosscultural understandings and a few taught subject contents. Through the trail to convey messages in English, their foreign language, students learned the role of verbal and nonverbal language and the more universal way to explain topics to children who are unfamiliar with what re taught. And they also learned and noticed the cultural differences and similalities between the two countries. It seemed that students realized that the two countries share many things in common such as what chidren are like, teachers’ attitude toward children and challenges they are facing, and people’s kindness. These learning was no substitute experience for the participants and it is hoped that their experience will be passed to the next generation when they become teachers

    Superiority trial comparing intraoperative wound irrigation with aqueous 10% povidone–iodine to saline for the purpose of reducing surgical site infection after elective gastrointestinal surgery: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

    Introduction Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common complications after gastrointestinal surgery, with a reported incidence of approximately 10%–25%, which is higher than the rates after other types of surgery. Intraoperative wound irrigation (IOWI) is a simple intervention for SSI prevention, and recent studies have reported that IOWI with aqueous povidone–iodine (PVP-I) is significantly more effective at reducing the incidence of SSI than saline. However, the evidence level of previous trials evaluating the efficacy of aqueous PVP-I solution for preventing SSI has been low.Methods and analyses We propose a single-institute, prospective, randomised, blinded-endpoint trial to assess the superiority of IOWI with aqueous 10% PVP-I solution compared with normal saline for reducing SSI in clean-contaminated wounds after elective gastrointestinal surgery. In the study group, IOWI with 40 mL of aqueous 10% PVP-I solution is performed for 1 min before skin suture, and in the control group, IOWI with 100 mL of saline is performed for 1 min before skin suture. We hypothesise that IOWI with aqueous 10% PVP-I solution will achieve a 50% reduction in the incidence of SSIs. The target number of cases is set at 950. The primary outcome is the incidence of incisional SSI up to postoperative day 30 and will be analysed in the modified intention-to-treat set.Ethics and dissemination This trial was designed and is being conducted by Saitama Medical Center, Jichi Medical University, with approval from the Bioethics Committee for Clinical Research, Saitama Medical Center, Jichi Medical University. Participant recruitment began in June 2019. The final results will be reported in international peer-reviewed journals immediately after trial completion.Trial registration number UMIN000036889
