Localized Control of Curie Temperature in Perovskite Oxide Film by Capping-layer- induced Octahedral Distortion
With reduced dimensionality, it is often easier to modify the properties of
ultra-thin films than their bulk counterparts. Strain engineering, usually
achieved by choosing appropriate substrates, has been proven effective in
controlling the properties of perovskite oxide films. An emerging alternative
route for developing new multifunctional perovskite is by modification of the
oxygen octahedral structure. Here we report the control of structural oxygen
octahedral rotation in ultra-thin perovskite SrRuO3 films by the deposition of
a SrTiO3 capping layer, which can be lithographically patterned to achieve
local control. Using a scanning Sagnac magnetic microscope, we show increase in
the Curie temperature of SrRuO3 due to the suppression octahedral rotations
revealed by the synchrotron x-ray diffraction. This capping-layer-based

Two-Dimensional Confinement of 3d1 Electrons in LaTiO3/LaAlO3 Multilayers
We report spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements of the anisotropy of the
interband transitions parallel and perpendicular to the planes of
(LaTiO3)n(LaAlO3)5 multilayers with n = 1-3. These provide direct information
about the electronic structure of the two-dimensional (2D) 3d^1 state of the Ti
ions. In combination with LDA+U calculations, we suggest that 2D confinement in
the TiO2 slabs lifts the degeneracy of the t_{2g} states leaving only the
planar d_xy orbitals occupied. We outline that these multilayers can serve as a

Misfit Strain Accommodation in Epitaxial ABO3 Perovskites: Lattice Rotations and Lattice Modulations
We present a study of the lattice response to the compressive and tensile
biaxial stress in La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) and SrRuO3 (SRO) thin films grown on
a variety of single crystal substrates: SrTiO3, DyScO3, NdGaO3 and
(La,Sr)(Al,Ta)O3. The results show, that in thin films under misfit strain,
both SRO and LSMO lattices, which in bulk form have orthorhombic (SRO) and
rhombohedral (LSMO) structures, assume unit cells that are monoclinic under
compressive stress and tetragonal under tensile stress. The applied stress
effectively modifies the BO6 octahedra rotations, which degree and direction
can be controlled by magnitude and sign of the misfit strain. Such lattice
distortions change the B-O-B bond angles and therefore are expected to affect
magnetic and electronic properties of the ABO3 perovskites.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. B 13 pages, 9 figure
Prevention of Catheter-Related Bacteremia with a Daily Ethanol Lock in Patients with Tunnelled Catheters: A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial
Background: Catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) results in significant attributable morbidity and mortality. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, we studied the efficacy and safety of a daily ethanol lock for the prevention of CRBSI in patients with a tunnelled central venous catheter (CVC). Methodology: From 2005 through 2008, each lumen of the CVC of adult hematology patients was locked for 15 minutes per day with either 70%-ethanol or placebo, where after the lock solution was flushed through. As a primary endpoint, the incidence rates of endoluminal CRBSI were compared. Principal Findings: The intent-to-treat analysis was based on 376 patients, accounting for 448 CVCs and 27,745 catheter days. For ethanol locks, the incidence of endoluminal CRBSI per 1000 CVC-days was 0.70 (95%-CI, 0.4-1.3), compared to 1.19 (95% confidence interval, 0.7-1.9) for placebo (incidence rate-ratio, 0.59; 95% confidence interval, 0.27-1.30; P = .19). For endoluminal CRBSI according to the strictest definition (positive hub culture and identical bacterial strain in blood), a 3.6-fold, non-significant, reduction was observed for patients receiving ethanol (2 of 226 versus 7 of 222; P = .103). No lifethreatening adverse events were observed. More patients receiving ethanol discontinued lock-therapy (11 of 226 versus 1 of 222; P = .006) or continued with decreased lock-frequency (10 of 226 versus 0 of 222; P = .002), due to non-severe adverse events. Conclusions: In this study, the reduction in the incidence of endoluminal CRBSI using preventive ethanol locks was nonsignificant, although the low incidence of endoluminal CRBSI precludes definite conclusions. Therefore, the lack of statistical significance may partially reflect a lack of power. Significantly more patients treated with ethanol locks discontinued their prophylactic treatment due to adverse effects, which were non-severe but reasonably ethanol related. Additional studies should be performed in populations with higher incidence of (endoluminal) CRBSI. Alternative sources of bacteremia, like exoluminal CRBSI or microbial translocation during chemotherapy-induced mucositis may have been more important in our patients. High-dose posaconazole for azole-resistant aspergillosis and other difficult-to-treat mould infections
Background: Oral follow-up therapy is problematic in moulds with reduced azole-susceptibility, such as azole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus infection. Currently, only intravenous liposomal amphotericin B (L-AmB) is advocated by guidelines for the treatment of azole-resistant aspergillosis infections. Preclinical research indicates that high-dose posaconazole (HD-POS) might be a feasible option provided that high drug exposure (ie POS serum through levels >3 mg/L) can be achieved and is safe. Objectives: To describe our experience with the use of oral HD-POS as treatment strategies for patients infected with pathogens with a POS MIC close to the clinical breakpoint. Patients/Methods: We review evidence supporting the use of HD-POS and describe our experience on safety and efficacy in 16 patients. In addition, we describe the adverse events (AE) observed in 25 patients with POS concentrations at the higher end of the population distribution during treatment with the licensed dose. Results: Sixteen patients were treated intentionally with HD-POS for voriconazoleresistant invasive aspergillosis (7/16), mucormycosis (4/16), salvage therapy for IA (4/16) and IA at a sanctuary site (spondylodiscitis) in 1. Grade 3- 4 AEs were observed in 6, and all of them were considered at least possibly related. Grade 3- 4 AEs were observed in 5 of the 25 patients with spontaneous high POS serum through levels considered at least possibly related using Naranjo scale. Conclusions: High-dose posaconazole is a treatment option if strict monitoring for both exposure and for AE is possible
Management of cerebral azole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus infection : a role for intraventricular liposomal-amphotericin B
Objectives: In the pre-azole era, central nervous system (CNS) infections with Aspergillus had a dismal outcome. Survival improved with voriconazole but CNS infections caused by azole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus preclude its use. Intravenous liposomal-amphotericin B (L-AmB) is the preferred treatment option for azole-resistant CNS infections but has suboptimal brain concentrations. Methods: We describe three patients with biopsy-proven CNS aspergillosis where intraventricular L-AmB was added to systemic therapy. Two patients with azole-resistant aspergillosis and one patient with azole-susceptible CNS aspergillosis were treated with intraventricular L-AmB at a dose of 1 mg weekly. Results: We describe three patients successfully treated with a combination of intravenous and intraventricular L-AmB. All three patients survived but one patient developed serious headaches, most likely not related to this treatment. Conclusions: Intraventricular L-AmB may have a role in the treatment of therapy-refractory CNS aspergillosis when added to systemic therapy. (C) 2020 The Author(s). Physiological Appearance of Hybrid FDG-Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography Imaging Following Uncomplicated Endovascular Aneurysm Sealing Using the Nellix Endoprosthesis
Purpose: To investigate the physiological uptake of hybrid fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) before and after an uncomplicated endovascular aneurysm sealing (EVAS) procedure as a possible tool to diagnose EVAS graft infection and differentiate from postimplantation syndrome. Materials and Methods: Eight consecutive male patients (median age 78 years) scheduled for elective EVAS were included in the prospective study (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT02349100). FDG-PET/CT scans were performed in all patients before the procedure and 6 weeks after EVAS. The abdominal aorta was analyzed in 4 regions: suprarenal, infrarenal neck, aneurysm sac, and iliac. The following parameters were obtained for each region: standard uptake value (SUV), tissue to background ratio (TBR), and visual examination of FDG uptake to ascertain its distribution. Demographic data were obtained from medical files and scored based on reporting standards. Results: Visual examination showed no difference between pre- and postprocedure FDG uptake, which was homogenous. In the suprarenal region no significant pre- and postprocedure differences were observed for the SUV and TBR parameters. The infrarenal neck region showed a significant decrease in the SUV and no significant decrease in the TBR. The aneurysm sac and iliac regions both showed a significant decrease in SUV and TBR between the pre- and postprocedure scans. Conclusion: Physiological FDG uptake after EVAS was stable or decreased with regard to the preprocedure measurements. Future research is needed to assess the applicability and cutoff values of FDG-PET/CT scanning to detect endograft infection after EVAS
