    Bird Friendly Beef: Exploring the Impacts of Regenerative Forage Production

    In the eastern US, managed hayfields and pasturelands represent a significant portion of remaining available grassland bird habitat, hosting several declining species including the eastern meadowlark (Sturnella magna) and the grasshopper sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum). However, these working landscapes have deteriorated in their ability to support grassland birds in recent decades due to more frequent and early hay cuttings and intensive grazing. Since the conservation of grassland birds is inextricably linked to agricultural systems, for conservation to be effective, land management must aim to benefit both producers and birds. Regenerative agriculture is an emerging approach that incorporates land management practices that benefit agricultural ecosystems and increase efficiency and profitability. Regenerative grazing has demonstrated associations with greater bird abundance, but there is a significant gap in research that investigates whether these practices contribute to successful nesting. Collaborators from Smithsonian’s Virginia Working Landscapes, American Farmland Trust, and George Mason University set out to explore the effects of regenerative grazing practices on forage quality and the reproductive success of grassland birds. We established four experimental grazing and haying treatments on private working lands. For each treatment, we collected forage samples for nutrient analysis and quantified reproductive success using a combination of territory mapping and systematic nest searching. Our preliminary analysis suggests that grazing pastures early and stockpiling for fall and winter grazing results in standing forages suitable in quality for several different production classes of livestock while reducing producer reliance on harvested feeds such as hay. Our observations also identified this system to provide the greatest propensity for fledgling success of grassland birds due to the lack of disturbances during peak nesting periods which traditionally are due to trampling, haying, and predation

    The HOSTS survey: evidence for an extended dust disk and constraints on the presence of giant planets in the Habitable Zone of β\beta Leo

    The young (50-400 Myr) A3V star β\beta Leo is a primary target to study the formation history and evolution of extrasolar planetary systems as one of the few stars with known hot (∼\sim1600∘^\circK), warm (∼\sim600∘^\circK), and cold (∼\sim120∘^\circK) dust belt components. In this paper, we present deep mid-infrared measurements of the warm dust brightness obtained with the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer (LBTI) as part of its exozodiacal dust survey (HOSTS). The measured excess is 0.47\%±\pm0.050\% within the central 1.5 au, rising to 0.81\%±\pm0.026\% within 4.5 au, outside the habitable zone of β\beta~Leo. This dust level is 50 ±\pm 10 times greater than in the solar system's zodiacal cloud. Poynting-Robertson drag on the cold dust detected by Spitzer and Herschel under-predicts the dust present in the habitable zone of β\beta~Leo, suggesting an additional delivery mechanism (e.g.,~comets) or an additional belt at ∼\sim5.5 au. A model of these dust components is provided which implies the absence of planets more than a few Saturn masses between ∼\sim5 au and the outer belt at ∼\sim40 au. We also observationally constrain giant planets with the LBTI imaging channel at 3.8~μ\mum wavelength. Assuming an age of 50 Myr, any planet in the system between approximately 5 au to 50 au must be less than a few Jupiter masses, consistent with our dust model. Taken together, these observations showcase the deep contrasts and detection capabilities attainable by the LBTI for both warm exozodiacal dust and giant exoplanets in or near the habitable zone of nearby stars.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomical Journa

    The EOD Sound Response in Weakly Electric Fish

    1. A spontaneous EOD response to sound is described in two gymnotoids of the pulse Electric Organ Discharge (EOD) type, Hypopomus and Gymnotus, and in one mormyrid, Brienomyrus (Figs. 2-4). 2. In all three species, the EOD response to the sound onset was a transient EOD rate increase. In the low EOD rate Hypopomus (3-6 EODs/s at rest) the first, second, or third EOD interval following sound onset was significantly shorter than the average EOD interval before stimulation. The shortest latency found was 100 ms, the longest ca. 1.2 s. Gymnotus (around 50 EODs/s at rest) responded similarly, but the third interval after sound onset was the first to be affected even at highest intensities (shortest latencies approx. 60 ms; latencies >0.5 s at low sound intensities). In Brienomyrus (4-8 EODs/s at rest) the response occurred already at the first EOD interval after sound onset. 3. An EOD sound response was recorded in Hypoporous and in Gymnotus up to 5,000 Hz sound frequency (in one Gymnotus individual: up to 7,000 Hz). Due to technical limitations the low frequency limit of the response could not be exactly determined: the fishes responded well even below 100 Hz. Hypopomus had its maximum sensitivity around 500 Hz (Fig. 5), Gymnotus around 1,000 Hz (Fig. 6). 4. In all three species the EOD sound response was graded with sound intensity (Hypopomus: Fig. 7). 5. No EOD response to sound was found in two gymnotoids of the wave type, Eigenmannia and Apteronotus, and in the gymnotoid pulse fish Rhamphichthys. A criterion is proposed by which it should be possible to predict whether or not a weakly electric fish species will show the EOD sound response. 6. It is concluded that the EOD response to sound is similar to EOD responses to other kinds of stimulation (light, touch, vibration, food, and even electrical).     Allopatric differentiation in the acoustic communication of a weakly electric fish from southern Africa, Marcusenius macrolepidotus (Mormyridae, Teleostei)

    A few species of the weakly electric snoutfish, the African freshwater family Mormyridae, have been reported to vocalise. However, allopatric populations of a single species were never compared. Members of three allopatric Marcusenius macrolepidotus populations, originating from the Upper Zambezi River in Namibia, the Buzi River (Mozambique), and the Incomati River system in South Africa, vocalised with pulsatile growl- and tonal hoot sounds in dyadic confrontation experiments. A high rate of growling accompanied territorial and agonistic interactions and also non-threatening interactions between males and females, which in one pair appeared to be courtship. Growl sound characteristics of M. macrolepidotus from the Incomati system differed from those of the Upper Zambezi in a significantly higher frequency of the first harmonic (mean, 355 Hz vs 266 Hz). The two vocalising males from the Buzi River generated growls about twice as long as the other fish. Furthermore, the growl pulse period was about 4 ms in M. macrolepidotus from the Upper Zambezi River and from the Incomati system, but 6 ms in M. macrolepidotus from the Buzi River. Hoots were only observed in agonistic encounters. Hoot oscillograms showed a sinusoidal waveform, and the mean duration of this sound was similar in Incomati system fish (mean, 161 ms), Upper Zambezi fish (172 ms) and Buzi fish (103 and 145 ms for the two vocalising individuals). The mean frequency of the first hoot harmonic was higher in Incomati system fish (326 Hz) than in Upper Zambezi fish (245 Hz). Both growl and hoot occurred only in the presence of conspecifics, probably signalling the presence and condition of an opponent, territory owner or potential mate. This is the first evidence for (1) sound production and acoustical communication in another species and genus, M. macrolepidotus, from southern Africa to be (2) geographically differentiated

    Increased Pancreatitis in Allografts Flushed with Histidine-Tryptophan-Ketoglutarate Solution: a Cautionary Tale

    We reviewed pancreas transplantation outcomes after Histidine-Tryptophan-Ketoglutarate (HTK) and University of Wisconsin (UW) preservation solution use between 2001 and 2007 at two transplant centers. While equivalence has been claimed for kidney and liver transplant outcomes after the use of HTK or UW preservation solution, consensus has not been reached on equivalence when flushing pancreata. Others have reported comparable patient and graft survival rates, but found an association between the use of HTK and an increase in the incidence of acute rejection and pancreatitis. In reviewing our experiences, we found in pancreata flushed with HTK a higher incidence of postoperative complications including graft pancreatitis, use of octreotide and a decreased rate of insulin-independence at hospital discharge. These findings prompted us to critically review our centers\u27 experience to determine if there is a basis for suspecting a causal relationship
