    Characterization of model errors in the calculation of tangent heights for atmospheric infrared limb measurements

    We review the main factors driving the calculation of the tangent height of spaceborne limb measurements: the ray-tracing method, the refractive index model and the assumed atmosphere. We find that commonly used ray-tracing and refraction models are very accurate, at least in the middle-infrared. The factor with largest effect in the tangent height calculation is the assumed atmosphere. Using a climatological model in place of the real atmosphere may cause tangent height errors up to ±200 m. Depending on the adopted retrieval scheme, these errors may have a significant impact on the derived profiles

    Noise-induced phenomena in riparian vegetation dynamics

    Random forcing due to the river streamflow is a key element in riparian vegetation ecosystems. It influences several aspects of the riparian landscape, the most important being the morphology and water availability. In this letter, we analytically solve a stochastic model to show how hydrological random fluctuations are able to induce both statistically stable states and bimodality in vegetation behavior. These noise-induced results can contribute to explain two well-documented features of several riparian landscapes: the bell-shaped biomass distribution along riparian transects, and spatial vegetation patchiness along a river

    Quantifying the impact of the stream-aquifer interaction on the surface-subsurface exchange

    The exchange of oxygen and nutrients between the well-aerated stream water and the subsurface water is crucial for the biochemical conditions of the hyporheic zone, i.e., the interface region between the stream and the deep aquifer. The hyporheic zone is extremely important for the ecology of the fluvial environment because of the rich microbial community that lives on the hyporheic sediments. The metabolic activity of these microrganisms controls the fate of nitrogen and phosphorus in the pore water, and influences the fate of these nutrients at the catchment scale. Unfortunately, the uncomplete knowledge of the complex hydrodynamics of the coupled surface-subsurface flow field often hinders the understanding of the ecological relevance of the hyporheic processes. A reasonable amount of information on these hydrodynamic conditions is required by biologists and ecologists in order to gain a deeper insight on these processes. This contribution analyses how the interaction between the groundwater table and the free-surface stream influences the hyporheic exchange induced by the bedforms through the streambed. The most representative characteristics of the hyporheic exchange - e.g., the depth of the hyporheic zone - have been parametrized in terms of a small number of easily measurable quantities. These information on the hyporheic flow field provide the fundamental basis for the study of the ecological functioning of the hyporeic zon

    Propagation of crises in the virtual water trade network

    The international trade of agricultural goods is associated to the displacement of the water used to produce such goods and embedded in trade as a factor of production. Water virtually exchanged from producing to consuming countries, named virtual water, defines flows across an international network of “virtual water trade” which enable the assessment of environmental forcings and implications of trade, such as global water savings or country dependencies on foreign water resources. Given the recent expansion of commodity (and virtual water) trade, in both displaced volumes and network structure, concerns have been raised about the exposure to crises of individuals and societies. In fact, if one country had to markedly decrease its export following a socio-economical or environmental crisis, such as a war or a drought, many -if not all- countries would be affected due to a cascade effect within the trade network. The present contribution proposes a mechanistic model describing the propagation of a local crisis into the virtual water trade network, accounting for the network structure and the virtual water balance of all countries. The model, built on data-based assumptions, is tested on the real case study of the Argentinean crisis in 2008-09, when the internal agricultural production (measured as virtual water volume) decreased by 26% and the virtual water export of Argentina dropped accordingly.     Wind fluctuations affect the mean behaviour of naturally ventilated systems

    We study the dynamics of a naturally ventilated room in which a point source provides a steady source of buoyancy and which is affected by an opposing unsteady wind. The wind is modelled as a stochastic forcing, which aims at simulating realistic velocity fluctuations as observed in the lower atmosphere. Our main finding is the occurrence of a "noise-induced transition", namely a structural change of the mean behaviour of the system: the warm-cold air interface does not fluctuate around the elevation exhibited when wind is constant, but oscillations occur around a new (significantly lower) interface elevation. We provide the physical explanation for such a counter-intuitive behaviour and show its dependence on (i) wind characteristics (intensity and timescale of fluctuations) and (ii) relative strength of wind over thermal loads. A realistic example case shows that the behaviour highlighted here has potentially major implications in the design and management of naturally ventilated buildings

    Noise-driven cooperative dynamics between vegetation and topography in riparian zones

    Riparian ecosystems exhibit complex biotic and abiotic dynamics, where the triad vegetation-sediments-stream determines the ecogeomorphological features of the river landscape. Random fluctuations of the water stage are a key trait of this triad, and a number of behaviors of the fluvial environment can be understood only taking into consideration the role of noise. In order to elucidate how randomness shape riparian transects, a stochastic model that takes into account the main links between vegetation, sediments, and the stream is adopted, emphasizing the capability of vegetation to alter the plot topography. A minimalistic approach is pursued, and the probability density function of vegetation biomass is analytically evaluated in any transect plot. This probability density function strongly depends on the vegetation-topography feedback. We demonstrate how the vegetation-induced modifications of the bed topography create more suitable conditions for the survival of vegetation in a stochastically dominated environment

    Measuring economic water scarcity in agriculture: a cross-country empirical investigation

    High water availability enhances agricultural performance and food security. However, many countries where water is abundant according to hydrological indicators face difficulties in the utilization of water in agriculture, being in a situation of economic water scarcity (EWS), due to lack of institutional and material means for water management and governance. EWS faces a stronger challenge of measurability, if compared to physical water scarcity. Since the Sustainable Development Goal Indicator on Integrated management of domestic and transboundary water resources (IWRM) is a unique attempt to quantify information on water management at a national level, we explore whether it can represent a valid metric for EWS measurement. We first show that a high level of water management is neither necessarily associated to high economic power of the country nor to low physical water availability. Then, we analyze whether the indicator can predict typical EWS situations such as low agricultural productivity and inefficient water use. Although the importance of water institutions for agriculture is well known through case studies at the local level, we make the first attempt to quantify the strengths of this relation at a global scale for different crops in climatic diverse countries. We detect a positive and significant association between IWRM level and yield, and consequently a negative and equally significant association between the IWRM level and the crop water footprint. Statistical significance holds also when potentially confounding variables are included in a multiple regression analysis. We infer from this analysis that good water management, as detectable through the IWRM indicator, improves land productivity and water saving, in turn mitigating EWS. Our findings pave the way toward the use of the IWRM indicator as a valuable tool for measuring EWS in agriculture, bridging the measurability gap of economic water scarcity, with straightforward policy implications in favour of investments in water management as a lever for enhancing food security and development

    Visibility analysis of boundary layer transition

    We study the transition to turbulence in a flat plate boundary layer by means of visibility analysis of velocity time-series extracted across the flow domain. By taking into account the mutual visibility of sampled values, visibility graphs are constructed from each time series. The latter are, thus, transformed into a geometrical object, whose main features can be explored using measures typical of network science that provide a reduced order representation of the underlying flow properties. Using these metrics, we observe the evolution of the flow from laminarity to turbulence and the effects exerted by the free-stream turbulence. Different from other methods requiring an extensive amount of spatiotemporal data (e.g., full velocity field) or a set of parameters and thresholds arbitrarily chosen by the user, the present network-based approach is able to identify the onset markers for transition by means of the streamwise velocity time-series alone.
