The Timely Humor of Stephen Leacock

Stephen Leacock, one of the finest humorists of this century deserves reassessment. Born in 1869 in Swansmore, Hampshire, England, and resettled with his family on a farm near Lake Simcoe, Ontario, at age six, he survived the rigors of frontier life in a family of twelve children, all reared by a mother of breeding, hardihood, and humaneness, and deserted by a profligate, Micawber-like but insensitive father. Through his mother\u27s encouragement and meager family endowment, he attended Upper Canada College, a private secondary school in Toronto. Leacock\u27s best known and most widely used text, Elements of Political Science (1906), earned him more money than any of his books of humor. It was revised and reissued in 1921, again proving successful. He published widely and influentially in his professional disciplines, chiefly political science, but it was his humor that built his reputation

REEXAMINING THE LENGTH OF LAW ENFORCEMENT CAREERS

    Get PDF
Law enforcement agencies from all sectors, including local, state, and federal agencies, are experiencing a dramatic decrease in staffing. Concurrently, recruitment of new officers has also significantly declined. As law enforcement staffing decreases, agencies struggle to meet the needs of the populations they serve. Reduced staffing also impacts law enforcement’s ability to conduct front-line and collaborative homeland security functions. This thesis examines how changes to law enforcement retirement systems impact the recruiting and retention of officers. This thesis utilizes existing academic literature from varied disciplines to examine the impact that changes in benefits will have on law enforcement staffing and the ability of law enforcement as a sector to participate in homeland security activities. The intent of this thesis is to predict the success or failure of benefits reforms as they relate to recruitment and retention of staff in law enforcement careers.Civilian, Massachusetts State PoliceApproved for public release. Game and the gaze: Sofonisba Anguissola's subversion of gendered genre scenes

I am researching a female Renaissance painter, named Sofonisba Anguissola. I am looking into how she was breaking traditional barriers when it comes to the representation/depiction of women in genre scenes. I am looking at one of her images in particular, The Chess Game, and comparing it with a chess scene created by Giulio Campi, her tutor's cousin. I am researching how her image casts the female players in a different light, a more positive one, than the one that is more of a traditional genre scene, made by Campi
