Eliminación/Degradación de Triazinas Mediante Biorreactor de Membrana con Post-Tratamiento de Ozonización
The aim of the research was to evaluate the removal of micropollutants in a combined system MBR + ozonation. The research was carried out in a MBR scale laboratory plant which was fed with synthetic wastewater, doped with simazine (SIM), atrazine (ATZ) and terbutilazine (TBZ). The MBR operational conditions were: hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 20 h, organic loading rate (OLR) of 0.23 KgCOD/KgSSV·day, sludge retention time (SRT) of 30 d, and flux of 5.5 LMH. Two ozone doses were tested: low dose (16 mg O3/L) and high dose (45 mg O3/L). The removal eficiency of organic matter was 96%. For the studied triazines, low biodegradation effiencies were reached by biological treatment (MBR): 57%, 53% and 63% for SIM, ATZ and TBZ, respectively. The complementary treatment of ozonation improved the quality of the effluents. At low ozonation dose the overall removal efficiencies increased to 95%, 92% and 96% for SIM, ATZ and TBZ, respectively. At high ozonization dose the overall removal efficiencies were 98%, 97% and 97 % for SIM, ATZ and TBZ, respectively, percentages slightly higher than those obtained at low dose. The results showed the combination of MBR + O3 is effective to remove micropollutants from wastewater, contributing to the preservation of a good ecological state of water bodies.Keywords: Bioreactor, Membrane, Ozone, Triazines, Herbicides
Composition of marsupial zona pellucida: a molecular and phylogenetic approach

To access the final edited and published work see https://doi.org/10.1071/RD16519The zona pellucida (ZP) is an extracellular matrix that surrounds mammalian oocytes. In eutherians it is
formed from three or four proteins (ZP1, ZP2, ZP3, ZP4). In the few marsupials that have been studied, however, only three
of these have been characterised (ZP2, ZP3, ZP4). Nevertheless, the composition in marsupials may be more complex,
since a duplication of the ZP3 gene was recently described in one species. The aim of this work was to elucidate the ZP
composition in marsupials and relate it to the evolution of the ZP gene family. For that, an in silico and molecular analysis
was undertaken, focusing on two South American species (gray short-tailed opossum and common opossum) and five
Australian species (brushtail possum, koala, Bennett’s wallaby, Tammar wallaby and Tasmanian devil). This analysis
identified the presence of ZP1 mRNA and mRNA from two or three paralogues of ZP3 in marsupials. Furthermore,
evidence for ZP1 and ZP4 pseudogenes in the South American subfamily Didelphinae and for ZP3 pseudogenes in two
marsupials is provided. In conclusion, two different composition models are proposed for marsupials: a model with four
proteins (ZP1, ZP2 and ZP3 (two copies)) for the South American species and a model with six proteins (ZP1, ZP2, ZP3
(three copies) and ZP4) for the Australasian specie
Validity and reproducibility of a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire in Spanish preschoolers - The SENDO project
Introduction: nowadays, it is important to determine whether food frequency questionnaires (FFQ) are valid tools to collect information on usual
diet in children.
Objective: we evaluated the reproducibility and validity of the semi-quantitative FFQ used in a Spanish cohort of children aged 4-7 years.
Methods: to explore its reproducibility, parents filled a 138-item FFQ at baseline (FFQ-0) and then one year later (FFQ-1). To explore its validity,
the FFQ-1 was compared with four weighed 3-day dietary records (DRs) that were used as standard of reference. To estimate associations we
calculated deattenuated Pearson’s correlation coefficients to correct for season-to-season variability, and the Bland-Altman index. We also calculated the weighted kappa index and assessed participant’s gross misclassification across quintiles. We analyzed data from 67 (for reproducibility)
and 37 (for validity) children aged 4-7 years old, recruited by the pilot study of the SENDO project.
Results: regarding reproducibility, we found mean Bland-Altman indexes of 0-10.45 % for nutrients and 1.49 %-10.45 % for foods. The
adjusted r ranged between 0.29 and 0.71, and between 0.27 and 0.74 for nutrients and foods, respectively. Regarding validity, we found mean
Bland-Altman indexes of 0 %-16.22 % and 0 %-10.81 % for nutrients and for food groups, respectively. The deattenuated r ranged between
0.38 and 0.81 for nutrients, and between 0.53 and 0.68 for foods. The weighted kappa index for agreement across quintiles ranged from 54.1
to 85.1 for nutrients, and from 55.4 to 78.4 for food groups.
Conclusions: our results showed acceptable levels of both reproducibility and validity, and that the ad-hoc developed FFQ is a valid tool for
assessing usual diet in Spanish preschoolers.Introducción: es importante determinar si los cuestionarios de frecuencia de consumo de alimentos (CFCA) son herramientas válidas para
recopilar información sobre la dieta habitual en los niños.
Objetivo: evaluar la reproducibilidad y validez del CFCA semi-cuantitativo de una cohorte española de niños de 4 a 7 años.
Métodos: en total se estudiaron 67 (para reproducibilidad) y 37 (para validez) niños de 4 a 7 años de edad del estudio piloto del proyecto
SENDO. Para explorar la reproducibilidad, los padres cumplimentaron el CFCA basalmente (CFCA-0) y al año (CFCA-1). Para explorar la validez,
el CFCA-1 se comparó con cuatro registros dietéticos (DR) pesados de 3 días. Calculamos coeficientes de correlación de Pearson desatenuados
para corregir la variabilidad inter-estacional, y el índice de Bland-Altman. El índice kappa ponderado permitió evaluar la clasificación errónea de
los participantes entre quintiles.
Resultados: respecto a la reproducibilidad, encontramos índices promedio de Bland-Altman de 0-10,45 % para los nutrientes y de 1,49-10,45 %
para los alimentos. La r ajustada varió entre 0,29 y 0,71, y entre 0,27 y 0,74 para nutrientes y alimentos, respectivamente. En cuanto a la validez,
encontramos índices promedio de Bland-Altman de 0-16,22 % y 0-10,81 % para nutrientes y alimentos, respectivamente. La r desatenuada
osciló entre 0,38 y 0,81 para los nutrientes y entre 0,53 y 0,68 para los alimentos. El índice kappa ponderado para el acuerdo entre quintiles
varió entre 54,1 y 85,1 para los nutrientes y entre 55,4 y 78,4 para los grupos de alimentos.
Conclusiones: nuestros resultados mostraron niveles aceptables tanto de reproducibilidad como de validez. El FFQ desarrollado ad hoc es una
herramienta válida para evaluar nutrientes y alimentos en preescolares españoles
Probing quantum gravity using photons from a flare of the active galactic nucleus Markarian 501 observed by the MAGIC telescope
We analyze the timing of photons observed by the MAGIC telescope during a
flare of the active galactic nucleus Mkn 501 for a possible correlation with
energy, as suggested by some models of quantum gravity (QG), which predict a
vacuum refractive index \simeq 1 + (E/M_{QGn})^n, n = 1,2. Parametrizing the
delay between gamma-rays of different energies as \Delta t =\pm\tau_l E or
\Delta t =\pm\tau_q E^2, we find \tau_l=(0.030\pm0.012) s/GeV at the 2.5-sigma
level, and \tau_q=(3.71\pm2.57)x10^{-6} s/GeV^2, respectively. We use these
results to establish lower limits M_{QG1} > 0.21x10^{18} GeV and M_{QG2} >
0.26x10^{11} GeV at the 95% C.L. Monte Carlo studies confirm the MAGIC
sensitivity to propagation effects at these levels. Thermal plasma effects in
the source are negligible, but we cannot exclude the importance of some other

Recent insights on uncertainties present in integrated catchment water quality modelling
This paper aims to stimulate discussion based on the experiences derived from the QUICS project (Quantifying Uncertainty in Integrated Catchment Studies). First it briefly discusses the current state of knowledge on uncertainties in sub-models of integrated catchment models and the existing frameworks for analysing uncertainty. Furthermore, it compares the relative approaches of both building and calibrating fully integrated models or linking separate sub-models. It also discusses the implications of model linkage on overall uncertainty and how to define an acceptable level of model complexity. This discussion includes, whether we should shift our attention from uncertainties due to linkage, when using linked models, to uncertainties in model structure by necessary simplification or by using more parameters. This discussion attempts to address the question as to whether there is an increase in uncertainty by linking these models or if a compensation effect could take place and that overall uncertainty in key water quality parameters actually decreases. Finally, challenges in the application of uncertainty analysis in integrated catchment water quality modelling, as encountered in this project, are discussed and recommendations for future research areas are highlighted
Toward sustainable environmental quality : priority research questions for Europe
The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals have been established to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. Delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals will require a healthy and productive environment. An understanding of the impacts of chemicals which can negatively impact environmental health is therefore essential to the delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals. However, current research on and regulation of chemicals in the environment tend to take a simplistic view and do not account for the complexity of the real world, which inhibits the way we manage chemicals. There is therefore an urgent need for a step change in the way we study and communicate the impacts and control of chemicals in the natural environment. To do this requires the major research questions to be identified so that resources are focused on questions that really matter. We present the findings of a horizon-scanning exercise to identify research priorities of the European environmental science community around chemicals in the environment. Using the key questions approach, we identified 22 questions of priority. These questions covered overarching questions about which chemicals we should be most concerned about and where, impacts of global megatrends, protection goals, and sustainability of chemicals; the development and parameterization of assessment and management frameworks; and mechanisms to maximize the impact of the research. The research questions identified provide a first-step in the path forward for the research, regulatory, and business communities to better assess and manage chemicals in the natural environment. El Programa Mentor de Aeronáuticos se inicia en 2004con una doble vertiente de actuación. Por un lado, Tutores y Mentores facilitan el proceso de integración de los Alumnos de Nuevo Ingreso en la vida universitaria; por otro, el estudio de las dificultades académicas de los Alumnos Tutelados conduce a Cambios Metodológicas en el Aula que ayudan a activar las relaciones profesor-alumno y a mejorar el rendimiento del esfuerzo de todos, profesores y alumnos. Se describen éstas experiencias, así como los resultados obtenidos en los últimos cuatro año
Role of age and comorbidities in mortality of patients with infective endocarditis
Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyse the characteristics of patients with IE in three groups of age and to assess the ability of age and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) to predict mortality.
Methods: Prospective cohort study of all patients with IE included in the GAMES Spanish database between 2008 and 2015. Patients were stratified into three age groups:<65 years, 65 to 80 years, and = 80 years.The area under the receiver-operating characteristic (AUROC) curve was calculated to quantify the diagnostic accuracy of the CCI to predict mortality risk.
Results: A total of 3120 patients with IE (1327 < 65 years;1291 65-80 years;502 = 80 years) were enrolled.Fever and heart failure were the most common presentations of IE, with no differences among age groups.Patients =80 years who underwent surgery were significantly lower compared with other age groups (14.3%, 65 years; 20.5%, 65-79 years; 31.3%, =80 years). In-hospital mortality was lower in the <65-year group (20.3%, <65 years;30.1%, 65-79 years;34.7%, =80 years;p < 0.001) as well as 1-year mortality (3.2%, <65 years; 5.5%, 65-80 years;7.6%, =80 years; p = 0.003).Independent predictors of mortality were age = 80 years (hazard ratio [HR]:2.78;95% confidence interval [CI]:2.32–3.34), CCI = 3 (HR:1.62; 95% CI:1.39–1.88), and non-performed surgery (HR:1.64;95% CI:11.16–1.58).When the three age groups were compared, the AUROC curve for CCI was significantly larger for patients aged <65 years(p < 0.001) for both in-hospital and 1-year mortality.
Conclusion: There were no differences in the clinical presentation of IE between the groups. Age = 80 years, high comorbidity (measured by CCI), and non-performance of surgery were independent predictors of mortality in patients with IE.CCI could help to identify those patients with IE and surgical indication who present a lower risk of in-hospital and 1-year mortality after surgery, especially in the <65-year group
