Pre-Figurative Structures for Social Connection
The world has many structures that foster social connection. Especially in the age of the internet, there are many off and online worlds that do so. Alternative festivals, temporary communities and electoral guerrilla theater organized online and practiced offline are all potential ways to prefigure the world we want to live in. Scaling functions from q-deformed Virasoro characters
We propose a renormalization group scaling function which is constructed from
q-deformed fermionic versions of Virasoro characters. By comparison with
alternative methods, which take their starting point in the massive theories,
we demonstrate that these new functions contain qualitatively the same
information. We show that these functions allow for RG-flows not only amongst
members of a particular series of conformal field theories, but also between
different series such as N=0,1,2 supersymmetric conformal field theories. We
provide a detailed analysis of how Weyl characters may be utilized in order to
solve various recurrence relations emerging at the fixed points of these flows.
The q-deformed Virasoro characters allow furthermore for the construction of

Use of ultraviolet C (UVC) radiation to inactivate infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) and viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) in fish processing plant effluent
We determined the stability of infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) and viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) suspended in either fish processing plant effluent blood water (EBW) or culture media and examined the effectiveness of UVC radiation to inactivate IHNV and VHSV suspended in both solutions. Without exposure to UVC, IHNV and VHSV were maintained in 4°C blood water for up to 48 hours without significant reduction in virus titer. However when exposed to UVC radiation using a low pressure mercury vapour lamp collimated beam, IHNV and VHSV were inactivated, and the efficacy of UVC radiation was dependent upon the solution and virus type being treated. A 3-log reduction for VHSV and IHNV in culture media was achieved at 3.28 and 3.84 mJ cm-2, respectively. The UV dose needed for a 3-log reduction of VHSV in EBW was 3.82 mJ cm-2. However, exposure of IHNV in EBW to the maximum UVC dose tested (4.0 mJ cm-2) only led to a 2.26-log-reduction. Factors such as particle size, and possible association of viruses with suspended EBW particulate, were not investigated in this study, but may have contributed to the difference in UVC effectiveness. Future work should emphasize improved filtration methods prior to UV treatment of processing plant EBW at an industrial scale.<br /
A zeta function approach to the relation between the numbers of symmetry planes and axes of a polytope
A derivation of the Ces\`aro-Fedorov relation from the Selberg trace formula
on an orbifolded 2-sphere is elaborated and extended to higher dimensions using
the known heat-kernel coefficients for manifolds with piecewise-linear
boundaries. Several results are obtained that relate the coefficients, ,
in the Shephard-Todd polynomial to the geometry of the fundamental domain. For
the 3-sphere we show that is given by the ratio of the volume of the

Long-term epidemiological survey of Kudoa thyrsites (Myxozoa) in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) from commercial aquaculture farms
Kudoa thyrsites (Myxozoa) encysts within myocytes of a variety of fishes. While infected fish appear unharmed, parasite-derived enzymes degrade the flesh post-mortem. In regions of British Columbia (BC), Canada, up to 4–7% of fillets can be affected, thus having economic consequences and impacting the competitiveness of BC's farms. K. thyrsites was monitored in two farms having high (HP) or low (LP) historical infection prevalence. At each farm, 30 fish were sampled monthly for blood and muscle during the first year followed by nine samplings during year two. Prevalence and intensity were measured by PCR and histology of muscle samples. In parallel, fillet tests were used to quantify myoliquefaction. Infections were detected by PCR after 355 and 509 degree days at LP and HP farms, respectively. Prevalence reached 100% at the HP farm by 2265 degree days and declined during the second year, whereas it plateaued near 50% at the LP farm. Infection intensities decreased after 1 year at both farms. Blood was PCR-positive at both farms between 778 and 1113 degree days and again after 2000 degree days. Tomosyn inhibits synaptic vesicle priming in Caenorhabditis elegans
Caenorhabditis elegans TOM-1 is orthologous to vertebrate tomosyn, a cytosolic syntaxin-binding protein implicated in the modulation of both constitutive and regulated exocytosis. To investigate how TOM-1 regulates exocytosis of synaptic vesicles in vivo, we analyzed C. elegans tom-1 mutants. Our electrophysiological analysis indicates that evoked postsynaptic responses at tom-1 mutant synapses are prolonged leading to a two-fold increase in total charge transfer. The enhanced response in tom-1 mutants is not associated with any detectable changes in postsynaptic response kinetics, neuronal outgrowth, or synaptogenesis. However, at the ultrastructural level, we observe a concomitant increase in the number of plasma membrane-contacting vesicles in tom-1 mutant synapses, a phenotype reversed by neuronal expression of TOM-1. Priming defective unc-13 mutants show a dramatic reduction in plasma membrane-contacting vesicles, suggesting these vesicles largely represent the primed vesicle pool at the C. elegans neuromuscular junction. Consistent with this conclusion, hyperosmotic responses in tom-1 mutants are enhanced, indicating the primed vesicle pool is enhanced. Furthermore, the synaptic defects of unc-13 mutants are partially suppressed in tom-1 unc-13 double mutants. These data indicate that in the intact nervous system, TOM-1 negatively regulates synaptic vesicle priming. © 2006 Gracheva et al
The European Union, borders and conflict transformation: the case of Cyprus
Much of the existing literature on the European Union (EU), conflict transformation and border dynamics has been premised on the assumption that the nature of the border determines EU intervention and the consequences that flow from this in terms of EU impact. The article aims to transcend this literature through assessing how domestic interpretations influence EU border transformation in conflict situations, taking Cyprus as a case study. Moreover, the objective is to fuse the literature on EU bordering impact and perceptions of the EU’s normative projection in conflict resolution. Pursuing this line of inquiry is an attempt to depart from the notion of borders being constructed solely by unidirectional EU logics of engagement or bordering practices to a conceptualization of the border as co-constituted space, where the interpretations of the EU’s normative projections by conflict parties, and the strategies that they pursue, can determine the relative openness of the EU border
DC-electric-field-induced and low-frequency electromodulation second-harmonic generation spectroscopy of Si(001)-SiO interfaces
The mechanism of DC-Electric-Field-Induced Second-Harmonic (EFISH) generation
at weakly nonlinear buried Si(001)-SiO interfaces is studied experimentally
in planar Si(001)-SiO-Cr MOS structures by optical second-harmonic
generation (SHG) spectroscopy with a tunable Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser. The
spectral dependence of the EFISH contribution near the direct two-photon
transition of silicon is extracted. A systematic phenomenological model of the
EFISH phenomenon, including a detailed description of the space charge region
(SCR) at the semiconductor-dielectric interface in accumulation, depletion, and
inversion regimes, has been developed. The influence of surface quantization
effects, interface states, charge traps in the oxide layer, doping
concentration and oxide thickness on nonlocal screening of the DC-electric
field and on breaking of inversion symmetry in the SCR is considered. The model
describes EFISH generation in the SCR using a Green function formalism which
takes into account all retardation and absorption effects of the fundamental
and second harmonic (SH) waves, optical interference between field-dependent
and field-independent contributions to the SH field and multiple reflection
interference in the SiO layer. Good agreement between the phenomenological
model and our recent and new EFISH spectroscopic results is demonstrated.
Finally, low-frequency electromodulated EFISH is demonstrated as a useful
differential spectroscopic technique for studies of the Si-SiO interface in

Optically Selected BL Lacertae Candidates from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Seven
We present a sample of 723 optically selected BL Lac candidates from the SDSS
DR7 spectroscopic database encompassing 8250 deg^2 of sky; our sample
constitutes one of the largest uniform BL Lac samples yet derived. Each BL Lac
candidate has a high-quality SDSS spectrum from which we determine
spectroscopic redshifts for ~60% of the objects. Redshift lower limits are
estimated for the remaining objects utilizing the lack of host galaxy flux
contamination in their optical spectra; we find that objects lacking
spectroscopic redshifts are likely at systematically higher redshifts.
Approximately 80% of our BL Lac candidates match to a radio source in
FIRST/NVSS, and ~40% match to a ROSAT X-ray source. The homogeneous
multiwavelength coverage allows subdivision of the sample into 637 radio-loud
BL Lac candidates and 86 weak-featured radio-quiet objects. The radio-loud
objects broadly support the standard paradigm unifying BL Lac objects with
beamed radio galaxies. We propose that the majority of the radio-quiet objects
may be lower-redshift (z<2.2) analogs to high-redshift weak line quasars (i.e.,
AGN with unusually anemic broad emission line regions). These would constitute
the largest sample of such objects, being of similar size and complementary in
redshift to the samples of high-redshift weak line quasars previously
discovered by the SDSS. However, some fraction of the weak-featured radio-quiet
objects may instead populate a rare and extreme radio-weak tail of the much
larger radio-loud BL Lac population. Serendipitous discoveries of unusual white
dwarfs, high-redshift weak line quasars, and broad absorption line quasars with
extreme continuum dropoffs blueward of rest-frame 2800 Angstroms are also

Higher Derivative BLG: Lagrangian and Supersymmetry Transformations
Working to lowest non-trivial order in fermions, we consider the
four-derivative order corrected Lagrangian and supersymmetry transformations of
the Euclidean Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory. By demonstrating supersymmetric
invariance of the Lagrangian we determine all numerical coefficients in the
system. In addition, the supersymmetry algebra is shown to close on the scalar
and gauge fields. We also comment on the extension to Lorentzian and other
non-Euclidean 3-algebra theories.Comment: 23 page
