Submillimetre molecular line observations and modelling of molecular clouds.
PhDSubmillimetre molecular line observations of molecular clouds in
our galaxy are presented, and the data analysed using various alternative
cloud models.
A critical review is given of the methods commonly used to
interpret molecular line data, including both theoretical considerations
and issues relating to calibration and comparability of results
obtained with different telescopes. A detailed comparison is made
between results predicted from large velocity gradient (LVG) models,
including the generalisation to non-monotonic velocity flows, and
those given by "microturbulent" clouds.
An LVG model is employed in an investigation of conditions in the
molecular outflows frequently found in star formation regions, for
which observations in the CO J=3-2 rotational transition at 345 GHz
are presented. These are combined with lower frequency data from the
literature to derive various properties of the outflows for a sample
of 13 sources. The most important result is that local H2 densities
exist in the outflows which are higher, typically by an order of magnitude,
than previously derived average values obtained using only
lower frequency data.
Observations are presented of the S255 and DR21 clouds in the
transitions CO J=2-1, CO J=3-2, CS J=7-6, HCN J=4-3, HCO+ J=4-3 and
-3-
H13CO+ J=4-3 and are supplemented by continuum data at 350 s. n and
(for DR21) at 20 pm. It is shown that, although some features
of the data can be understood in terms of an LVG model, there is compelling
evidence for fragmentation of the clouds on length scales
much smaller than the cloud sizes. The data are used to constrain
the local H2 densities and relative molecular abundances in the
clumpy cloud cores, and compared with lower frequency results from
the literature.
The implications of these results for the star formation environment
are discussed, and an assessment made of possible strategies
for their further investigation

The Specialization of Foreign Assistance in Sub-Saharan Africa
This study uses time-series cross-sectional logistic and OLS regressions to analyze data on foreign assistance and governance in Sub-Saharan Africa to determine the impact of different methods of foreign aid on democracy and democratic characteristics in Sub-Saharan Africa. Even though all foreign assistance has the end goal of promoting democratic growth, different aid targeted sectors have varying effects on democracy. The research has found that aid targeting social infrastructure, specifically health and government sectors, in Sub-Saharan Africa has a substantial, positive effect on democracy and democratic characteristics while economic infrastructure aid has no effect. This analysis could have an impact on future aid allocation by promoting aid specialization for social infrastructure
DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF A 3D-PRINTED, THERMOPLASTIC ELASTOMER (TPE) SPRING ELEMENT FOR USE IN CORRECTIVE HAND ORTHOTICS
This thesis proposes an algorithm that determine the geometry of 3D-printed, custom-designed spring element bands made of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) for use in a wearable orthotic device to aid in the physical therapy of a human hand exhibiting spasticity after stroke. Each finger of the hand is modeled as a mechanical system consisting of a triple-rod pendulum with nonlinear stiffness at each joint and forces applied at the attachment point of each flexor muscle. The system is assumed quasi-static, which leads to a torque balance between the flexor tendons in the hand, joint stiffness and the design force applied to the fingertip by the 3D-printed spring element. To better understand material properties of the spring element’s material, several tests are performed on TPE specimens printed with different infill geometries, including tensile tests and cyclic loading tests. The data and stress-strain curves for each geometry type are presented, which yield a nonlinear relationship between stress and strain as well as apparent hysteresis. Polynomial curves are used to fit the data, which allows for the band geometry to be designed. A hypothetical hand is presented along with how input measurements might be taken for the algorithm. The inputs are entered into the algorithm, and the geometry of the bands for each finger are generated. Results are discussed, and future work is noted, providing a means for the design of a customized orthotic device
THE CHANGING INFORMATION NEEDS OF FARMERS IN THE U.S. AND EUROPE
Both policy and market forces are causing unprecedented changes in agricultural structure and management in both the United States and in Europe. These changes will have profound impacts on the role of universities and extension services who provide information and education to farmers. This paper discusses some of the emerging and anticipated changes in information content and delivery in both the US and the EU. Some of the primary issues US agricultural producers will need to address as a result of the changes in the agricultural industry and policy include: strategic positioning, transferring management capabilities, frequent performance monitoring, evaluating new technology, monitoring external factors, managing information, and accountability. The information needs of farmers in Europe are closely linked to the evolution of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the European Union. The general agricultural policy framework is briefly presented in the paper. Price reduction, agri-environmental measures enhancement, and rural development policy are the most important elements of CAP reform. European agriculture is in the midst of major changes, mostly started in 1992, but destined to continue and increase in the near future. Different approaches to manage the agricultural sector involve the need for a different information system for farmers. It means not only new content in information, but also new ways to inform and do technical assistance. The primary information needs out are: farm management, risk management, EU programs and measures, quality production, low input and organic farming, marketing and advertising management, new technology introduction, structural adjustment funds management, investment decisions, rural tourism and recreational activities management. European agriculture is on the path to large and challenging changes. There is no way for farmers alone to manage these changes, and remain competitive in the market. Providing information has become the most important part of the extension activity. Information must include training sessions, demonstrations in the field, and assessment, together with the farmers, of the activities and the results obtained. There are many similarities in the farm management information needs of farmers in the US and EU. A critical factor for the Extension Services in the future is to adjust rapidly to the changes, and quickly develop new content and delivery plans for farmers' training. The challenge for universities and extension services to respond to the information needs will strain their resources. Collaborative efforts between our institutions may prove more valuable as faculty attempt to develop research and educational programs relevant to the emerging information needs. In addition, cooperation with the growing private sector agricultural education programs will probably be essential if public education and information delivery systems are to remain relevant.Farm Management,

Social innovation in question: The theoretical and practical implications of a contested concept
The concept of social innovation has become pervasive among practitioners and academics, though its definition remains elusive. This paper seeks to address this by suggesting a distinction between structural social innovation, which refers to wide social change in scale and scope, targeted versions of social innovation, which can be either radical or complementary to current socio-economic institutions, and instrumental social innovation, when it is used to rebrand previous agendas in a way that is more appealing to stakeholders. These four types of social innovation are discussed referring to practical examples in the literature. We then explore ways in which the concept could be further developed by engaging with the concepts of socio-technical transitions and the foundational economy
