    The choice of decision framework used to set regulatory tolerance levels for hazardous substances can be divided into rigid and flexible tolerance levels. Rigid decision frameworks include zero or deminimis that fix risk levels for some subpopulation. and/or highly tolerances The accelerating identification of highly sensitive exposed individuals and the division of the population into ever smaller subpopulations at higher risk could prove to be tremendously burdensome on regulatory systems, particularly for rigid decision frameworks. Rigid tolerance levels, philosophically based on "rights" to zero or arbitrarily low excess risks for individuals, do not contain sufficient flexibility to account for small high-risk subpopulations. Furthermore, the equal protection for all such groups is an illusion, mainly because of the potentially large number of such subgroups and the relatively fixed regulatory resources. Thus, deminimis regulation is seen as a minimal but inadequate improvement over zero risk regulation. with improved measures of the heterogeneous demand for risk reduction by various high-risk subpopulations, augmented cost-benefit analyses leading to flexible tolEr2.nces could provide a richer analytic framework for more efficient regulatory decisions.     A Systematic Review of the Health Impacts of Mass Earth Movements (Landslides)

    Background. Mass ground movements (commonly referred to as ‘landslides’) are common natural hazards that can have significant economic, social and health impacts. They occur as single events, or as clusters, and are often part of ‘disaster’ chains, occurring secondary to, or acting as the precursor of other disaster events. Whilst there is a large body of literature on the engineering and geological aspects of landslides, the mortality and morbidity caused by landslides is less well documented. As far as we are aware, this is the first systematic review to examine the health impacts of landslides. Methods. The MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, SCOPUS databases and the Cochrane library were systematically searched to identify articles which considered the health impacts of landslides. Case studies, case series, primary research and systematic reviews were included. News reports, editorials and non-systematic reviews were excluded. Only articles in English were considered. The references of retrieved papers were searched to identify additional articles. Findings. 913 abstracts were reviewed and 143 full text articles selected for review. A total of 27 papers reporting research studies were included in the review (25 from initial search, 1 from review of references and 1 from personal correspondence). We found a limited number of studies on the physical health consequences of landslides. Only one study provided detail of the causes of mortality and morbidity in relation a landslide event. Landslides cause significant mental health impacts, in particular the prevalence of PTSD may be higher after landslides than other types of disaster, though these studies tend to be older with only 3 papers published in the last 5 years, with 2 being published 20 years ago, and diagnostic criteria have changed since they were produced. Discussion. We were disappointed at the small number of relevant studies, and the generally poor documentation of the health impacts of landslides. Mental health impacts were better documented, though some of the studies are now quite old. Further research on the health impacts of landslides needs to be undertaken to support those responding to landslide disasters and to aid disaster risk mitigation advocacy

    Recent advances in functional neuroimaging analysis for cognitive neuroscience

    Functional magnetic resonance imaging and electro-/magneto-encephalography are some of the main neuroimaging technologies used by cognitive neuroscientists to study how the brain works. However, the methods for analysing the rich spatial and temporal data they provide are constantly evolving, and these new methods in turn allow new scientific questions to be asked about the brain. In this brief review, we highlight a handful of recent analysis developments that promise to further advance our knowledge about the working of the brain. These include (1) multivariate approaches to decoding the content of brain activity, (2) time-varying approaches to characterising states of brain connectivity, (3) neurobiological modelling of neuroimaging data, and (4) standardisation and big data initiatives.Peer reviewe

    Coaching to augment mentoring to achieve faculty diversity:a randomized controlled trial

    Purpose: The Academy for Future Science Faculty (the Academy) is a novel coaching intervention for biomedical PhD students designed to address limitations in previous efforts to promote faculty diversity. Unlike traditional research mentoring, the Academy includes both group and individual coaching, coaches have no research or evaluation roles with the students, and it is based on social science theories. The authors present a qualitative case study of one of the coaching groups and provide statistical analyses indicating whether one year in the Academy effects students’ perceptions of the achievability and desirability of an academic career. Method: The authors tested (July 2012–July 2013), with Northwestern University ethical approval, the Academy via a longitudinal randomized controlled trial. Participants were 121 latter-stage biomedical PhD students. The authors collected data via questionnaires, interviews, and meeting recordings. Results: The case study shows how group career coaching can effectively supplement traditional one-to-one research mentoring; provide new role models for underrepresented minority students; and provide theory-based lenses through which to engage in open conversations about race, gender, and science careers. Repeated-measures analysis of variance showed that perceived achievability increased in the Academy group from baseline to one-year follow-up (mean, 5.75 versus 6.39) but decreased in the control group (6.58 versus 5.81). Perceived desirability decreased significantly less (P < .05) in the Academy group (7.00 versus 6.36) than in the control group (7.83 versus 5.97). Conclusions: Early results suggest that an academic career coaching model can effectively supplement traditional research mentoring and promote persistence toward academic careers

    Chandra Observations of X-ray Weak Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies

    We present Chandra observations of 17 optically-selected, X-ray weak narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies. These objects were optically identified by Williams et al. (2002) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release, but were not found in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) despite having optical properties similar to RASS-detected NLS1s. All objects in this sample were detected by Chandra and exhibit a range of 0.5-2 keV photon indices Gamma=1.1-3.4. One object was not detected in the soft band, but has a best-fit Gamma=0.25 over the full 0.5-8 keV range. These photon indices extend to values far below what are normally observed in NLS1s. A composite X-ray spectrum of the hardest objects in this sample does not show any signs of absorption, although the data do not prohibit one or two of the objects from being highly absorbed. We also find a strong correlation between Gamma and L_1keV; this may be due to differences in L_bol/L_Edd among the NLS1s in this sample. Such variations are seemingly in conflict with the current paradigm that NLS1s accrete near the Eddington limit. Most importantly, this sample shows that strong, ultrasoft X-ray emission is not a universal characteristic of NLS1s; in fact, a substantial number may exhibit weak and/or low-Gamma X-ray emission.Comment: Minor changes, added section on X-ray weakness. 25 pages incl. 6 figures, 3 tables, accepted to Ap

    Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis: Limited Available Treatment Options but Promising Drugs in Development and Recent Progress Towards a Regulatory Approval Pathway

    The prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is increasing world-wide in parallel to the increase of the obesity epidemic. Insulin resistance (IR) and the accumulation of triglyceride-derived toxic lipid metabolites play a key role in its pathogenesis. Multiple biomarkers are being evaluated for the non-invasive diagnosis of NASH. However, a percutaneous liver biopsy is still the gold standard method; the minimal diagnostic criteria include the presence of \u3e5 % macrovesicular steatosis, inflammation, and liver cell ballooning. Several pharmaceutical agents have been evaluated for the treatment of NASH; however, no single therapy has been approved so far. Due to the increasing prevalence and the health burden, there is a high need to develop therapeutic strategies for patients with NASH targeting both those with early-stage disease as well as those with advanced liver fibrosis. There are unique challenges in the design of studies for these target populations. Collaborative efforts of health authorities, medical disease experts, and the pharmaceutical industry are ongoing to align options for a registrational pathway. Several companies pursuing different mechanisms of action are nearing the end of phase II with their candidates.     Haematological and Hepatological effects of Pito, Burukutu-Guinea corn and Burukutu-Millet in Albino Rats

    This study investigated the haematological and hepatological effects of selected locally brewed beers in albino rats. Three locally brewed beers were purchased from locally brewed beer joint in Wukari, Nigeria. Twenty male albino rats were used and were randomly distributed into four groups of five rats each. Group 1 served as normal control, while groups 2, 3 and 4 were administered pito, burukutu-Guinea corn and burukutu-millet (10mL/kg bwt) respectively for 21 days before being sacrificed. Result showed that ALT and AST activities increased in all the groups administered the different beer compared to the control. Cholesterol increased in group 2, but decreased in group 4. Potassium and glucose reduced in all test groups compared to the normal control. The differences in cholesterol, potassium and glucose levels are statistically less-significant (p>0.05) compared to the control. The liver histoarchitectural state of the test animals administered the beers compared to the control animals showed the beers had toxic effect on the animals. There is evidence of infiltration and distortion of some regions of the liver tissue in the test animals. This agrees with the results of serum biochemical parameters evaluated. The WBC, LYM and GRA increased in group 3 and reduced in groups 2 and 4 compared to the control. The MID reduced in all the test groups compared to the control. RBC, Hb and HCT increased in all the test groups compared to the control. The MCV increased only in group 4 and decreased in groups 2 and 3. The MCH, MCHC and RDWc reduced in all the test groups, while PLT, PCT, MPV and PDWc increased in all the test groups compared to the control. This study has shown that constant administration of pito, burukutu-guinea corn and burukutu-millet in the test animals for a long duration caused alterations and negative effect on the liver function, but may not interfere negatively with the Hb and RBC count

    Widespread association between the ericoid mycorrhizal fungus Rhizoscyphus ericae and a leafy liverwort in the maritime and sub-Antarctic

    A recent study identified a fungal isolate from the Antarctic leafy liverwort Cephaloziella varians as the ericoid mycorrhizal associate Rhizoscyphus ericae. However, nothing is known about the wider Antarctic distribution of R. ericae in C. varians, and inoculation experiments confirming the ability of the fungus to form coils in the liverwort are lacking. Using direct isolation and baiting with Vaccinium macrocarpon seedlings, fungi were isolated from C. varians sampled from eight sites across a 1875-km transect through sub- and maritime Antarctica. The ability of an isolate to form coils in aseptically grown C. varians was also tested. Fungi with 98–99% sequence identity to R. ericae internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and partial large subunit ribosomal (r)DNA sequences were frequently isolated from C. varians at all sites sampled. The EF4/Fung5 primer set did not amplify small subunit rDNA from three of five R. ericae isolates, probably accounting for the reported absence of the fungus from C. varians in a previous study. Rhizoscyphus ericae was found to colonize aseptically-grown C. varians intracellularly, forming hyphal coils. This study shows that the association between R. ericae and C. varians is apparently widespread in Antarctica, and confirms that R. ericae is at least in part responsible for the formation of the coils observed in rhizoids of field-collected C. varians
