Migration, Poverty Reduction Strategies and Human Development

This paper focuses on the specific question of how Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs) address migration and its potential to enhance human development at the national level. Based on a review of PRSPs completed since 1999, it argues that migration often remains poorly recognised or analysed in poorer countries in terms of its impacts on poverty reduction, whilst attitudes towards migration in these countries are often highly negative and/or based on limited evidence, especially in relation to internal migration. Analysis of how both internal and international migration are treated in PRSPs is also placed in the context of a broader understanding of the purpose of, and constraints faced by the PRS process. The paper goes on to highlight the extent to which in Sub-Saharan African countries, successive drafts of PRSPs have shown increasing attention to migration. Science teachers' transformations of the use of computer modeling in the classroom: using research to inform training

This paper, from the UK group in the STTIS (Science Teacher Training in an Information Society) project, describes research into the nature of teachers' transformations of computer modeling, and the development of related teacher training materials. Eight teacher case studies help to identify factors that favor or hinder the take-up of innovative computer tools in science classes, and to show how teachers incorporate these tools in the curriculum. The training materials use the results to provide activities enabling teachers to learn about the tools and about the outcomes of the research into their implementation, and help them to take account of these ideas in their own implementation of the innovations

Environmentally Adjusted Agricultural Productivity in the Great Plains

This study adjusts 1960-1996 agricultural productivity gains in a panel of Great Plains states to account for the discharge of pesticide and nitrogen effluents into the environment. The agricultural-environmental technology is approximated with translog distance functions that allow us to contrast traditional versus environmentally adjusted productivity gains. Findings indicate technical change has been increasingly biased toward environmentally friendly production. Changing the Landscape: Toward Equitable Programming Highlighting Choral Works by Women Composers

Changing the Landscape advocates for increased programming of choral compositions by women composers. Progress toward equitable programming is being realized especially for twenty-first century women composers; however, when surveying which pieces are selected within major genres of the choral canon, works by men are represented disproportionately. It is my view that this gap perpetuates not for lack of feminist research or artistic output, but for lack of an established tradition and lack of exposure (e.g., choral literature texts, choral conference concert programming, reading sessions). Conductors have more access than ever before to a myriad of high quality choral works by women in every genre performed in concert. This document analyzes choral works for eight varied genres and highlights the composer as a guide for conductors who feel compelled, as I do, to do their part in lessening this disparity.
