Probiotics have been considered by many authors as microorganisms and/or substances which affect intestinal flora by different mechanisms so that their beneficial effects have been reported not only in the gastrointestinal tract, including in the respiratory and urogenital. The aim of this study is to assess growth and weight gain with the provision of a probiotic cocktail containing (Lactobacilius acidophilus and Lactobacilius bifidus) of commercial use in the golden hamster which were obtained for 20 experimental animals with an average life 8 to 15 days, which were divided into two experimental groups, control group (GC) and experimental (GM) which lasted for eight weeks. The results show that the supplies of probiotic affect weight and growth of the hamsters during development to adulthood.
Heart rate variability in patients with Chagas’ heart disease
The prevalence by Trypanosoma cruzi of 436,000 inhabitants in Colombia is estimated, with annual cases of 5,250, in an exposed population of 4,792,000 inhabitants. Heart rate variability (HRV) is the time interval of a beat in a given time analysis. Its analysis allows to determine the sympathetic-vagal balance indirectly. This study analyzed the temporal and non-linear variables in 19 Chagasic patients and 19 controls, using a high-resolution polygraph and the Kubios software. The variable Standard Deviation of the RR Interval (SDRR) in the control population showed an average of 56.23±29.6ms vs 40.62±30.1ms in the seropositive; The Square Root of the Sum of the Square Differences of all Adjacent intervals (RMSSD) was 34.31±21.01ms and 31.94±37.33ms for controls and Chagas respectively. The number of consecutive RR intervals that differ by more than 50ms from each other (NN50) in controls 76.47±78.3 beats vs 13.47±36.8 for seropositives corresponding to the percentage of NN50 (pNN50) 12.3±13.3% and 2.64±6.0%, respectively for the same order of the groups. Approximate Entropy (ApEn) values were 1,249±0,134 for controls and 0,959±0,325 for seropositive, and for Sample Entropy (SampEn) it was 1,358±0,264 and 1,102±0,385 for controls and chagasics respectively. Greater irregularity of HRV was found in controls, which reflects a better state of health
A Fine-grained Data Set and Analysis of Tangling in Bug Fixing Commits
Context: Tangled commits are changes to software that address multiple
concerns at once. For researchers interested in bugs, tangled commits mean that
they actually study not only bugs, but also other concerns irrelevant for the
study of bugs.
Objective: We want to improve our understanding of the prevalence of tangling
and the types of changes that are tangled within bug fixing commits.
Methods: We use a crowd sourcing approach for manual labeling to validate
which changes contribute to bug fixes for each line in bug fixing commits. Each
line is labeled by four participants. If at least three participants agree on
the same label, we have consensus.
Results: We estimate that between 17% and 32% of all changes in bug fixing
commits modify the source code to fix the underlying problem. However, when we
only consider changes to the production code files this ratio increases to 66%
to 87%. We find that about 11% of lines are hard to label leading to active
disagreements between participants. Due to confirmed tangling and the
uncertainty in our data, we estimate that 3% to 47% of data is noisy without
manual untangling, depending on the use case.
Conclusion: Tangled commits have a high prevalence in bug fixes and can lead
to a large amount of noise in the data. Prior research indicates that this
noise may alter results. As researchers, we should be skeptics and assume that
unvalidated data is likely very noisy, until proven otherwise.Comment: Status: Accepted at Empirical Software Engineerin
Prion Protein Misfolding Affects Calcium Homeostasis and Sensitizes Cells to Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress
Prion-related disorders (PrDs) are fatal neurodegenerative disorders characterized by progressive neuronal impairment as well as the accumulation of an abnormally folded and protease resistant form of the cellular prion protein, termed PrPRES. Altered endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis is associated with the occurrence of neurodegeneration in sporadic, infectious and familial forms of PrDs. The ER operates as a major intracellular calcium store, playing a crucial role in pathological events related to neuronal dysfunction and death. Here we investigated the possible impact of PrP misfolding on ER calcium homeostasis in infectious and familial models of PrDs. Neuro2A cells chronically infected with scrapie prions showed decreased ER-calcium content that correlated with a stronger upregulation of UPR-inducible chaperones, and a higher sensitivity to ER stress-induced cell death. Overexpression of the calcium pump SERCA stimulated calcium release and increased the neurotoxicity observed after exposure of cells to brain-derived infectious PrPRES. Furthermore, expression of PrP mutants that cause hereditary Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease or fatal familial insomnia led to accumulation of PrPRES and their partial retention at the ER, associated with a drastic decrease of ER calcium content and higher susceptibility to ER stress. Finally, similar results were observed when a transmembrane form of PrP was expressed, which is proposed as a neurotoxic intermediate. Our results suggest that alterations in calcium homeostasis and increased susceptibility to ER stress are common pathological features of both infectious and familial PrD models
Neuronal Deletion of Caspase 8 Protects against Brain Injury in Mouse Models of Controlled Cortical Impact and Kainic Acid-Induced Excitotoxicity
system. mice demonstrated superior survival, reduced seizure severity, less apoptosis, and reduced caspase 3 processing. Uninjured aged knockout mice showed improved learning and memory, implicating a possible role for caspase 8 in cognitive decline with aging.Neuron-specific deletion of caspase 8 reduces brain damage and improves post-traumatic functional outcomes, suggesting an important role for this caspase in pathophysiology of acute brain trauma
Examining the generalizability of research findings from archival data
This initiative examined systematically the extent to which a large set of archival research findings generalizes across contexts. We repeated the key analyses for 29 original strategic management effects in the same context (direct reproduction) as well as in 52 novel time periods and geographies; 45% of the reproductions returned results matching the original reports together with 55% of tests in different spans of years and 40% of tests in novel geographies. Some original findings were associated with multiple new tests. Reproducibility was the best predictor of generalizability—for the findings that proved directly reproducible, 84% emerged in other available time periods and 57% emerged in other geographies. Overall, only limited empirical evidence emerged for context sensitivity. In a forecasting survey, independent scientists were able to anticipate which effects would find support in tests in new samples
Durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) is an important crop for
the world population and occupies a large cultivated area worldwide.
New cultivars need constant improvement of their agronomic management,
within which N fertilization is highlighted. Durum wheat is also
important in Chile where genetic breeding and agronomic management have
been developed to increase yield, industrial, and nutritional grain
quality. The objective of this experiment was to determine the
appropriate number of N applications during a crop cycle in a volcanic
ash soil in South Central Chile. Nitrogen split applications were
carried out on three durum wheat cultivars in a Melanoxerands soil
during the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 seasons. A rate of 200 kg ha-1 N was
applied at different growing stages including planting, tillering, flag
leaf, and heading (200-0-0-0, 100-100-0-0, 66-67-67-0, and 50-50-50-50
kg N ha-1, respectively). The evaluated traits were grain yield,
hectoliter weight, and wet gluten content. Results indicated that the
use of two and three split N applications increased grain yield and wet
gluten content with differences among genotypes. The best N split
strategy corresponded to two and three N splits: at planting and
tillering; at planting, tillering, and flag leaf, respectively.
