    Experimental software engineering in educational context

    Empirical studies are important in software engineering to evaluate new tools, techniques, methods and technologies in a structured way before they are introduced in the industrial (real) software process. Within this PhD thesis we will develop a framework of a consistent process for involving students as subjects of empirical studies of software engineering. In concrete, our experiences with software development teams composed of students will analyze how RUP (Rational Unified Process) processes can be compliant with the CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration), namely in the context of MLs (maturity levels) 2 and 3. Additionally, we will also analyze the influence of project management tools to improve the process maturity of the teams. Our final goal of carrying out empirical studies with students is to understand its validity when compared with the corresponding studies in real industrial settings

    Architectural element points: estimating software development effort by analysis of logical architectures

    Empirical studies are important in software engineering to evaluate new tools, techniques, methods and technologies. In object-oriented analysis, use case models describe the functional requirements of a software system, so they can be the basis for software measurement and sizing. The purpose of this study is to develop a new metric called Architectural Element Points (AEPoint) that enables to calculate the effort required to develop a software solution, using the 4-Step Rule Set (4SRS) method. This paper describes a case study with 60 undergraduate students grouped in four teams that developed a software system (Web application) for a real customer. In this study, we used the AEPoint metric to estimate the resources needed to develop a software system.     Work-in-progress on a thin IEEE1451.0 - architecture to implement reconfigurable Weblab infrastructures

    Institutions have been creating their own specific weblab infrastructures. Usually, they use distinct software and hardware architectures comprehending instruments and modules (I&M) able to be parameterized but difficult to be shared. These aspects are impairing their widespread in education, since collaboration between institutions, in developing and sharing resources, is still low. To handle both aspects, this paper proposes the adoption of the IEEE1451.0 Std. with FPGA technology for creating reconfigurable weblab infrastructures. It is suggested the adoption of an IEEE1451.0 infrastructure with compatible instruments, described in Hardware Description Languages (HDL), to be reconfigured in FPGA-based boards. Besides an overview of the IEEE1451.0 Std., this paper presents a solution currently under development which seeks to enable the reconfiguration and the remote control of weblab infrastructures using a set of IEEE1451.0 HTTP commands

    Longevity of risks in software development projects: a comparative analysis with an academic environment

    The study presented in this paper was developed in an academic environment. All subjects involved in this research are enrolled in the Information Systems Master’s Degree of the University of Minho. The main objective of this study is to demonstrate the need for the continuity of studies about the risks presented in software development projects. For this purpose, we analyzed more than four hundred risks and about one hundred problems faced and documented by the working groups. With the collected data we defined a list of twenty risks and conducted a comparative study of these risks with others already formalized in previous industrial studies.     Mobile Experimentation: closing an educational gap for new student generations?

    The M-learning concept is a consequence of mobile technology evolution, i.e. the appearance of devices like Personal Digital Assistants, smart phones and mobile phones with improved features, namely Java support. It is in the same line of E- learning versus Personal Computers and therefore the counterpart of one E- learning subset, named Remote Experimentation, within M-learning, could be designed as Mobile Experimentation. Remote Experimentation is traditionally regarded as the remote access to real-world experiments through a simple web browser running on a PC connected to the Internet, while Mobile Experimentation may be seen as the access to those same (or others) experiments, through mobile devices, used in M-learning contexts. The emergence of two distinct client types (PCs versus mobile devices) creates new requirements for the remote lab infrastructure, namely the ability to tune the experiment interface according to the characteristics (e.g. display size) of the accessing device.     Estudo palinostratigráfico do setor Malhadinha, região NE Alvares, concelho de Mértola, Faixa Piritosa Ibérica

    Cartografia geológica realizada pelo Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia (LNEG) acompanhada por estudos palinostratigráficos na região de Malhadinha, NE de Alvares, localizada no setor WNW da Faixa Piritosa Ibérica (FPI), concelho de Mértola, possibilitaram o conhecimento de detalhe da estratigrafia local. Apresentam-se as idades obtidas por palinologia para as formações Barranco do Homem e Filito-Quartzítica, ambas de idade do Famenniano superior, e Freixial, de idade do Viseano superior, correlacionando-se os dados obtidos com a geologia regional da FPI. Os dados obtidos confirmam o predomínio de estruturas alóctones no setor norte da Faixa Piritosa, entre Alvares e a fronteira espanhola.Geological mapping performed by the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology (LNEG) and palynostratigraphic studies carried out in Malhadinha region, NE of Alvares village, located in the northern sector of the Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB), WNW of Mértola, allowed to obtain a detailed knowledge of the local stratigraphy. Age data obtained by palynology to the Barranco do Homem (upper Famennian age), Phyllite-Quartzite (upper Famennian age), and Freixial (Visean age), formations are presented and discussed according to the IPB regional geological setting. The age data confirm the predominance of alloctonous tectonic structures in the studied region, in line with previous structural interpretations for the North Sector of the Portuguese part of the Iberian Pyrite Belt.(undefined

    “Como um som de noite e um faiscar de dia”: os impactes da poluição sonora de baixa frequência em áreas residenciais no município de Guimarães, Portugal

    Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo compreender os impactes da poluição sonora de baixa frequência na qualidade de vida da população e na sustentabilidade dos lugares, no município de Guimarães, Portugal. A investigação realizada foi desdobrada em duas vertentes. A primeira compreendeu medições sumárias realizadas em 2014, totalizando 9 pontos, com o grupo ‘próximo da fonte’, residentes no raio de até 50 metros, e o grupo ‘distante da fonte’, a mais de 250 metros de distância em relação à fonte. A segunda abarcou medições de 72 horas realizadas em 2015, com o grupo ‘muito próximo da fonte’ até 20 metros da fonte. A dimensão subjetiva compreendeu a percepção da incomodidade do ruído pela população usando um inquérito, adaptado da metodologia da Universidade de Salford. Na primeira abordagem, o ruído ultrapassa os valores da curva critério independente do grupo. Na segunda abordagem, os níveis de ruído medidos apresentam características flutuantes, e de acordo com a mesma metodologia, o ruído causado por essas infraestruturas pode ser incomodativo.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPE
