Hydrodynamics of turbulent flows within arrays of circular cylinders

This article presents a detailed spatial description, employing Particle Image Velocimetry, of a flow within an array of rigid and emergent cylinders with varying density in controlled laboratory conditions. Its main objective is to discuss the spatial distribution of the key terms of the budget of turbulent kinetic energy for different areal number-densities of stems. The following crucial innovations are introduced: a) the flow is quantified from spatial measurements, avoiding the use of the frozen turbulence approximation and b) space-averaging of two-point correlations and statistics is proposed as a means to salvage the formalism of homogeneous-isotropic turbulence. Turbulence characterization follows from second and third-order structure functions, autocorrelation functions, energy spectra and cospectra. Key terms of TKE budget are calculated in the inter-stem space and discussed. For reaches with large mean inter-stem distances equilibrium between production and dissipation is obtained. Turbulent diffusion reveals itself in the interaction of the von Kármán vortex sheet and background turbulence. Convective and pressure diffusion terms are important in the vicinity of individual stems

Trevo: Uma proposta de intervenção para a população institucionalizada em Lares de Infância e Juventude

Projeto de Graduação apresentado à Universidade Fernando Pessoa como parte dos requisitos para a obtenção do grau de Licenciada em CriminologiaO programa Trevo emerge da necessidade premente de suprir a lacuna relativa à inexistência de programas multidisciplinares para a população institucionalizada que, simultaneamente, desenvolvam competências pessoais e sociais, bem como a responsabilidade e autonomia. Baseado na literatura disponível, o programa Trevo propõe-se a desenvolver diversas competências em jovens institucionalizados em Lares de Infância e Juventude. O seu desenho contempla um total de seis módulos, abordando tópicos como a comunicação, as relações interpessoais, as emoções, a autonomia e responsabilidade e temas considerados tabu. Saliente-se que o Trevo é uma proposta de intervenção não implementada, embora o facto de se basear em diversos projetos de sucesso antecipe resultados positivos para os jovens institucionalizados.Trevo emerges from the urgent need to fill the gap related with the inexistence of multidisciplinary programmes for the institutionalized population which simultaneously may develop personal and social skills, as well as responsibility and autonomy. Based on the available literature, Trevo programme proposes itself to develop several skills on the institutionalized children and youngsters at Childhood and Youth Homes. It contemplates a total of six modules, addressing topics such as communication, inter-personal relationships, autonomy and responsibility and tabu topics. It should be stressed that Trevo has not yet been tested, although the fact that it converges several well succeeded projects, forecasts positive results for institutionalized youngsters

Fusion proteins towards fungi and bacteria in plant protection

Research ArticleIn agriculture, although fungi are considered the foremost problem, infections by bacteria also cause significant economical losses. The presence of different diseases in crops often leads to a misuse of the proper therapeutic, or the combination of different diseases forces the use of more than one pesticide. This work concerns the development of a ‘super-Blad’: a chimeric protein consisting of Blad polypeptide, the active ingredient of a biological fungicide already on the market, and two selected peptides, SP10-5 and Sub5, proven to possess biological potential as antibacterial agents. The resulting chimeric protein obtained from the fusion of Blad with SP10-5 not only maintained strong antibacterial activity, especially against Xanthomonas spp. and Pseudomonas syringae, but was also able to retain the ability to inhibit the growth of both yeast and filamentous fungi. However, the antibacterial activity of Sub5 was considerably diminished when fused with Blad, which seems to indicate that not all fusion proteins behave equally. These newly designed drugs can be considered promising compounds for use in plant protection. A deeper and focused development of an appropriate formulation may result in a potent biopesticide that can replace, per se, two conventional chemistries with less impact on the environmentinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

3D facial video retrieval and management for decision support in speech and language therapy

3D video is introducing great changes in many health related areas. The realism of such information provides health professionals with strong evidence analysis tools to facilitate clinical decision processes. Speech and language therapy aims to help subjects in correcting several disorders. The assessment of the patient by the speech and language therapist (SLT), requires several visual and audio analysis procedures that can interfere with the patient's production of speech. In this context, the main contribution of this paper is a 3D video system to improve health information management processes in speech and language therapy. The 3D video retrieval and management system supports multimodal health records and provides the SLTs with tools to support their work in many ways: (i) it allows SLTs to easily maintain a database of patients' orofacial and speech exercises; (ii) supports three-dimensional orofacial measurement and analysis in a non-intrusive way; and (iii) search patient speech-exercises by similar facial characteristics, using facial image analysis techniques. The second contribution is a dataset with 3D videos of patients performing orofacial speech exercises. The whole system was evaluated successfully in a user study involving 22 SLTs. História, tradição e património da música militar em Portugal: um estudo de caso: a charanga a cavalo da Guarda Nacional Republicana

Esta tese discute o papel do Cerimonial Militar mostrando a sua importância enquanto instrumento simbólico historicamente inventado. Através da repetição destas cerimónias em comemorações de algumas datas históricas, o passado é relembrado tornando assim possível a preservação de uma memória coletiva. A partir deste quadro teórico a tese centra-se no Cerimonial Militar português tomando a Charanga a Cavalo da Guarda Nacional Republicana como objeto de análise etnográfica.This thesis discusses the role of Military Ceremonial showing their importance as an historically invented symbolic instrument. Through the repetition of these ceremonies in commemoration of some historical dates, the past is remembered making thus possible the preservation of a collective memory. From this theoretical framework the thesis focuses on Portuguese Military Ceremonial taking the Charanga a Cavalo da Guarda Nacional Republicana as an object of ethnographic analysis

Personality and Aggressive Behavior: the relation between the five-factor and aggression models in a domestic violence suspects sample

The results show a positive correlation between neuroticism and hostility, a negative correlation between openness to experience and overall aggression, a negative correlation between agreeableness and physical aggression and anger, and a negative correlation between conscientiousness and anger. These results show us the need for personality assessment in domestic violence suspects and future research about personality and aggression.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Os vidros romanos do Castelo de Castro Marim

O conjunto de artefactos de vidro recolhido nas várias campanhas de escavação levadas a efeito no Castelo de Castro Marim tinha, à partida, limitações de vária natureza que se prendem com a ausência de contextos estratigráficos seguros e com a elevada fragmentação das peças analisadas. Esta última contribuiu para a dificuldade da classificação de alguns fragmentos, e a primeira impediu atribuições cronológicas com base na associação a outros materiais. Contudo, a datação intrínseca possibilitou verificar que a grande maioria se integra entre meados da primeira metade do século I e o primeiro terço do seguinte, ainda que existam utensílios vítreos posteriores, confirmando-se assim os dados que o estudo de outros materiais tinha proporcionado. Apesar destes constrangimentos, o estudo dos vidros romanos contribuiu positivamente para a leitura da economia de Baesuris, confirmando-se muito do que já se conhecia da sua dinâmica comercial. Além disso, a distribuição pelas diferentes categorias tornou possível averiguar o tipo de utilização deste material, sobretudo destinado ao consumo de alimentos, sendo escassos os que se destinavam ao armazenamento.The glass artefacts collected in several excavations carried out in Castro Marim Castle had various limitations relate to the absence of preserved stratigraphic contexts and the high fragmentation of the pieces. The latter one had contribute to the difficulty in the classification of some fragments, and the first had limit chronological assignments based on the combination with other materials. However, the typology data allow us the integration of the vast majority between the mid-first half of the first century and the first third of the II, what confirm the data that the study of other materials had provided. Despite these constraints, the study of roman glasses had contributes positively to the analysis of Baesuris economy, confirming much of what was already known of its commercial dynamics. Moreover, the formal distribution shows the type of use of this material, particularly for food consumption, with few to storage
