Brief Intervention for Truant Youth Sexual Risk Behavior and Marijuana Use
Substance use and sexual risk behaviors are common among adolescents, but research has focused attention on alcohol use. Much less is known about the relationship of marijuana use and sexual risk behavior among high-risk, especially truant, youths. We report interim findings from a NIDA-funded experimental, brief intervention (BI) study involving truant youths and their parents/guardians. Longitudinal data were analyzed to study (1) the relationships between the youths\u27 marijuana use and sexual risk behavior and (2) the effects of a substance use BI on their marijuana use and sexual risk behavior. A growth model analysis for parallel processes was conducted to study relationships between marijuana use and sexual risk behavior, and to assess the overall BI effect on linear and quadratic trends in subgroups of youth differing in their sexual risk behavior and marijuana use. Emotional Psychological and Related Problems Among Truant Youths: An Exploratory Latent Class Analysis
Latent class analysis was conducted on the psychosocial problems experienced by truant youths. Data were obtained from baseline interviews completed on 131 youths and their parents/guardians involved in a NIDA-funded, Brief Intervention Project. Results identified two classes of youths: Class 1(n=9) - youths with low levels of delinquency, mental health and substance abuse issues; and Class 2(n=37) - youths with high levels of these problems. Comparison of these two classes on their urine analysis test results and parent/guardian reports of traumatic events found significant (p\u3c.05) differences between them that were consistent with their problem group classification. Our results have important implications for research and practice
Brief Intervention for Truant Youth Sexual Risk Behavior and Alcohol Use: A Parallel Process Growth Model Analysis
Truant youths frequently experience family problems, emotional/psychological issues, substance misuse, and delinquency. They are likely engaging in alcohol use and sexual risk behavior at a higher rate than the general youth population. Early intervention services would benefit them, their families, and society. We present interim findings from an ongoing, National Institute on Drug Abuse-funded, experimental, brief intervention (BI) study involving truant youths and their parent/guardians. Baseline, 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up data were analyzed to determine whether alcohol use and sexual risk behaviors were longitudinally related, to examine the effects of the BI on alcohol use and sexual risk behaviors, to identify subgroups of youths involved in alcohol use and sexual risk behaviors, and to assess the impact of the BI on these subgroups. Results indicated alcohol use and sexual risk were longitudinally related. Limited treatment effects were observed for alcohol use. The Impact of a Religious/Spiritual Turning Point on Desistance: A Lifecourse Assessment of Racial/Ethnic Differences
Criminology’s most recent theoretical tradition involves examination of the developmental onset, continuity, and desistance from offending behavior across the life course. A prominent life course perspective organized around social bonding was proffered by Robert J. Sampson and John H. Laub in dual volumes that include Crime in the Making: Pathways and Turning Points Through Life (1993), and Shared Beginnings, Divergent Lives (2003). Because Sampson and Laub’s age-graded theory is based on a sample of White males born in the 1920s and 1930s, and matured during a historical period of vast economic growth, the universal theoretical processes emphasized in their theory may be overstated. Such assumptions may not generalize to more heterogeneous samples that includes minorities and individuals that vary in their levels of offending.
The present research evaluates the generalizability of the age-graded theory through examination of data collected from a representative and contemporary sample of adolescents followed into adulthood. In addition, this study seeks to examine an alternate turning point from deviant conduct, specifically religiosity/spirituality. Building on prior studies that explore the role of religiosity on change processes across race and ethnicity (Chu & Sung, 2009; Stansfield, 2017), the current investigation addresses open questions relating to the nature of the religion-desistance relationship.
Multilevel mixed effects models are utilized to estimate over time the separate impact of religious behavior and religious beliefs on deviant conduct, to further assess a religious turning point effect across subgroups disaggregated by race/ethnicity, and to evaluate the influence of religiosity on change from deviant outcomes characterized as violations of secular and ascetic standards. Analyses of religiosity/spirituality on these differing forms of deviance across race/ethnicity are also conducted.
In contrast to the hypothesized relationships, study findings reveal very little evidence of a religious/spiritual turning point effect in enacting change from deviant behaviors in the main models. Similar results indicate that religiosity indicates minimal differences in change from deviant conduct when the sample is disaggregated across race and ethnicity. Findings point to the nuances of the religion-desistance relationship, and depends upon processes that may involve attendance to church services or spiritual beliefs, and may be conditional on the type of deviance outcome examined—whether in violation of a secular or ascetic standard. Along with a discussion of these findings, limitations of the study, directions for future research, and implications for policy are provided

Enrolling and Engaging High-Risk Youths and Families in Community-Based, Brief Intervention Services
Increasing interest has been shown in brief interventions for troubled persons, including those with substance abuse problems. Most of the published literature on this topic has focused on adults, and on the efficacy of these interventions. Few of these studies have examined the critical issues of enrollment and engagement in brief intervention services. The present article seeks to address the shortcomings in the current literature by reporting on our experiences implementing National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-funded brief intervention projects involving truant and diversion program youths
Differential Effects of Mental Health Problems Among Truant Youths
Research indicates at-risk youth are more likely to experience emotional and psychological problems. Young people who are often truant from school represent a group of at-risk youth, but one for which mental health issues are understudied. This study examined heterogeneity of mental health problems among a sample of 300 truant adolescents using latent class analysis (LCA). LCA indicated the sample of truants was best represented by four latent subgroups of youth with low mental health problems; high depression, low mania; high mania, low depression; and high depression and mania. These subgroups were examined in relation to sociodemographic and psychosocial measures at baseline and after truancy offenses. Results indicated general and unique differences in these covariates across the four latent classes. Service and practice implications of better understanding mental health issues of truant youth are discussed
