Mood-tracking application as persuasive technology for reduction of occupational stress

    Get PDF
Occupational stress is a major concern in the job performance of employees. The use of persuasive technologies is one way to prevent or reduce this stress. The present study developed a mood tracking application and tested its effect on stress reduction of employees. Twenty-six employees of a petrochemical company were divided into equally-sized groups of married and single participants. Employees' accommodations are different based on their marital status. Other variables effecting stress were same for both groups. An OSI-R questionnaire was used to collect data before and after four weeks of application use. In present pilot study, data analysis shows that this kind of persuasive technology can have a significant positive effect on single employees and help them to decrease and manage their stress; however, no meaningful results were recorded for the married group because they did not use the application as much as participants in the single group

Replicative intermediates of Tomato leaf curl virus and its satellite DNAs

AbstractSeveral plant geminiviruses have been shown recently to utilize both rolling-circle replication (RCR) and recombination-dependent replication (RDR) strategies. A highly specific binding of the viral replication-associated protein (Rep) to its cognate DNA is essential for initiation of viral DNA replication and for the recognition of DNA components of the bipartite geminiviruses of the Begomovirus genus. We have extended the replication analysis to the monopartite Australian Tomato leaf curl virus (ToLCV), its Rep binding deficient mutants, and the satellite DNAs it supports. Analyses of viral DNA by two-dimensional agarose gel electrophoresis after fractionation by single-stranded (ss) DNA-selective cellulose chromatography revealed that DNA intermediates of ToLCV and its mutant were identical. Both RCR and RDR intermediates were identified. New ToLCV DNA forms were observed and characterized as subgenomic topoisomers, heterogeneous open circular double-stranded (ds) DNA, and degradation products. A 1350-nt DNA β satellite associated with the unrelated Cotton leaf curl Multan virus (CLCuMV) was supported by ToLCV and produced intermediates of both RCR and RDR, suggesting that replication strategies of satellites are determined by the helper virus. Replicative intermediates of the 682 nt ToLCV satellite DNA could not be resolved; however, concatemers of up to octamer were detected, together with a field of hybridizing material suggestive of complementary strand replication on heterogeneous circular ssDNA templates

QT dispersion in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus: the impact of disease activity

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Although autopsy studies have documented that the heart is affected in most SLE patients, clinical manifestations occur in less than 10%. QT dispersion is a new parameter that can be used to assess homogeneity of cardiac repolarization and autonomic function. We compared the increase in QT dispersion in SLE patients with high disease activity and mild or moderate disease activity.</p> <p>Methods and Results</p> <p>One hundred twenty-four patients with SLE were enrolled in the study. Complete history and physical exam, ECG, echocardiography, exercise test and SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI) were recorded. Twenty patients were excluded on the basis of our exclusion criteria. The patients were divided to two groups based on SLEDAI: 54 in the high-score group (SLEDAI > 10) and 50 in the low-score group (SLEDAI < 10).</p> <p>QT dispersion was significantly higher in high-score group (58.31 ± 18.66 vs. 47.90 ± 17.41 respectively; <it>P </it>< 0.004). QT dispersion was not significantly higher in patients who had received hydroxychloroquine (54.17 ± 19.36 vs. 50.82 ± 15.96, <it>P </it>= 0.45) or corticosteroids (53.58 ± 19.16 vs. 50.40 + 11.59, <it>P </it>= 0.47). There was a statistically significant correlation between abnormal echocardiographic findings (abnormalities of pericardial effusion, pericarditis, pulmonary hypertension and Libman-Sacks endocarditis) and SLEADI (<it>P </it>< 0.004).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>QT dispersion can be a useful, simple noninvasive method for the early detection of cardiac involvement in SLE patients with active disease. Concerning high chance of cardiac involvement, cardiovascular evaluation for every SLE patient with a SLEDAI higher than 10 may be recommended.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>Clinicaltrial.gov registration <a href="http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01031797">NCT01031797</a></p

Management in the Age of Wisdom

Morphometric cranial standards for sex estimation of a population in two ethnic groups in Southwest Iran

    No full text
Background: This study aimed to evaluate the cephalometric landmarks, cranial measurements, and cephalic index based on geographical and ethnic characteristics to make a database for the southwest Iranian population. Method: In this analytical cross-sectional study, different anatomic criteria were collected from head MRI images. The anthropometric measures taken included the maximum cranial length, maximum cranial height, maximum cranial breadth, cranial base length, foramen magnum length, upper facial height, lower facial height, foramen magnum breadth, bizygomatic breadth, orbital breadth, nasion-opisthion. The categorization of the head shape was based on the cephalic index. The cranial index was calculated using the equation ([maximum cranial breadth/maximum cranial length] × 100). These assessments were compared to define sexual dimorphism and inter-population variation in size and shape. Results: Sexual dimorphism existed in all cephalometric data except the cephalic index. The measurements comparisonin ethnicities showed that only (eu–eu) differs significantly between the two groups, which is 2,253 mm less in the Arab population compared to the Lur population (P value = 0.022). The cephalic index in males and females was found to be 73.66 and 75.08, respectively. Accordingly, 53.99% were dolichocephalic, 30.06% were mesocephalic, 14.11% were brachycephalic, and 1.84% were hyperbrachycephalic. The shape of the head had no relation to ethnicity but was related to sex (P value = 0.045). Conclusion: It is shown that cephalometric data can be used as diagnostic criteria to determine sex and ethnicity in the southwest Iranian population. It should be further verified on a greater sample size that evaluates more study age distribution

Foramen Tympanicum or Foramen of Huschke: A Bioarchaeological Study on Human Skeletons from an Iron Age Cemetery at Tabriz Kabud Mosque Zone

    No full text
The foramen tympanicum is an anatomical variation that is created in the tympanic plate of temporal bone during the first year of life. The tympanic plate grows and foramen tympanicum is gradually closed by about the fifth postnatal year. However, due to a defect in normal ossification, foramen tympanicum sporadically remains throughout life. The construction of a shopping center in Tabriz, northwest of Iran, led to the discovery of an Iron Age cemetery (1500-500 BC). Several tombs have been uncovered below one meter of sterile soil so far and a thick level of architectural debris from the medieval city has been discovered. Up to now, no bioarchaeological data has been gathered about the burials in this area. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of foramen tympanicum in this area. In this study, 45 skeletons were studied and the prevalence of this foramen was about 4.4% bilaterally. We also reported on two babies with fused and un-fused squamotympanic fissure. The persistence of this foramen is a possible risk factor for otologic complications after arthroscopy of the temporomandibular joint and salivary gland fistula through this foramen. The closure of this foramen could be also used for age estimation in sub-adult individuals. The incidence of this trait in this study was similar to other available studies on modern skeletons
